World No.1 looking for back-to-back glory in Blackpool
Champ Luke Humphries is chasing back-to-back titles in the showpiece 2025 Betfred World Matchplay.

The latest edition of the £800,000 darts event will see the reigning king headline a star-studded 32-player field at Blackpool's Winter Gardens, which also includes seven other World Champions.

Luke Littler, Michael van Gerwen and Gerwyn Price will also be amongst the stars in action at the Empress Ballroom across nine days of action from July 19-27.

The first round will see the world's top 16 pitted against the top 16 qualifiers from the one-year ProTour Rankings, with Humphries set to take on World Youth Champion Gian van Veen in a fascinating clash.
Humphries succeeded Nathan Aspinall in becoming World Matchplay champion 12 months ago and the Stockport star opens his title challenge against Dutch debutant Wessel Nijman on a bumper opening night in Blackpool.

2007 champion James Wade will play former Masters champion Joe Cullen in the tournament's opening clash, while 2022 semi-finalist Danny Noppert meets debutant Cameron Menzies in Saturday's other contest.
Sunday's bumper double session will see former World Matchplay winners Rob Cross, Peter Wright and Gary Anderson in action as World Champion Littler sets his sights on a first victory on the iconic Blackpool stage.
Australian No.1 Damon Heta will kick off Sunday afternoon's action against 2024 quarter-finalist Andrew Gilding, as World Grand Prix champion Mike De Decker makes his Winter Gardens return against five-time quarter-finalist Dave Chisnall.

Cross and Wright, the winners in 2019 and 2021 respectively, face Dutch duo Dirk van Duijvenbode and Jermaine Wattimena, before 2018 champion Anderson kicks off the evening's proceedings against Luke Woodhouse.
Elsewhere, Stephen Bunting and Ryan Joyce renew their Winter Gardens rivalry after meeting at the same stage last year, while 2023 runner-up Jonny Clayton locks horns with German number one Martin Schindler.
The first round concludes with a blockbuster line-up on Monday evening as three-time winner Van Gerwen takes on 2010 runner-up Raymond van Barneveld in a huge all-Dutch clash.

Sixth seed Chris Dobey gets his campaign underway with a tie against German No.2 Ricardo Pietreczko, before Northern Ireland's World Cup champions Daryl Gurney and Josh Rock enter the fray.
Gurney plays Price for the second straight year, while Rock faces former European Champion Ross Smith in another repeat showdown from 2024.

Following the completion of the first round, the second round will take place on Tuesday July 22 and Wednesday July 23, with the quarter-finals staged on Thursday July 24 and Friday July 25.
The semi-finals will be held on Saturday July 26, before the final takes place on the evening of Sunday July 27, following the fourth edition of the Betfred Women's World Matchplay.

Humble Noni Madueke moving back in with parents as former Tottenham academy ace completes divisive £52m Arsenal transfer

But for all the uproar, former Tottenham academy kid Noni Madueke views this move as a beautiful homecoming - quite literally - and one he intends to use to prove the thousands of doubters wrong. Boss Mikel Arteta has long admired Madueke, 23, for his versatility off both wings, the dynamic dribbling style, the speed and bravery on the ball. There are still some people to convince. Over 5,000 fans signed the petition #NoToMadueke when talks between Arsenal and Chelsea became more advanced. Not that it will dampen his excitement to be back where it all began in North London: born in Barnet, schooled in St Albans and at Spurs from 12 to 17. I know mum misses me in the house! I'm really proud.' Many see it as a gamble and make-or-break moment — but Madueke is no stranger to that. It was bold to leave Spurs for Dutch side PSV Eindhoven as a teenager in June 2018 — rejecting Manchester United to test himself abroad and moving to the small town of Wintelre with his mother. And it is a calculated risk to join a title-chasing side that will prove tough to break in to under Arteta — a young coach under immense pressure to deliver amid a five-year trophy drought. 'I can't wait to bring my style and help the boys to take that next step. 'I want to win all the competitions we are in — we're capable of doing that — and grow not only as a player but as a person.' Supporters may still be lukewarm over his arrival but Madueke has already felt the love from the Gunners' squad. Declan Rice sent his Three Lions pal a personalised letter to read upon signing. The winger continued: 'They all say amazing things about the club, how warm it is and how much of a family it is.' Despite his age, Madueke's experience for club and country stood out for Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta. After all, he already boasts 172 senior appearances for both PSV and Chelsea. Join SUN CLUB for the Arsenal Files every Friday plus in-depth coverage and exclusives from The Emirates 7 7 Madueke won the Conference League during his time at Chelsea His injury record was also a factor — playing 2,049 Prem minutes last term. He leads the top-flight stats charts in progressive carries and dribbles ending in shots on goal, too. It is why Arteta feels Madueke is 'one of the most talented wide forwards in the Premier League'. Crucially, the left-footer will also offer depth and competition for the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard. And the Gunners new boy said: 'I try to be a dual threat from the left and right. 'I only have one thought in my mind when I get the ball — to line up the full-back and then go past him.' Fans' anger stems from the regularity at which the club have filled the pockets of Chelsea for their players over the years. Madueke is the seventh Blues star to arrive in six years, with last summer's failed loan of Raheem Sterling a particular sore point. It is perhaps helpful that Madueke will not be thrown in straight away, having been given a few weeks' rest after his Club World Cup efforts before joining up for training next month. And he added: 'I'm very excited to get to work. I'll go on holiday for a little bit now but I can't wait to get back and meet all the boys and train. 'I was saying it to all my friends walking around here, 'You don't even want to take the rest'. 'I know I have to for my body and stuff to heal but when I come back, I'll be raring to go.'

Chelsea and Arsenal ‘monitoring Xavi Simons situation' with RB Leipzig star favouring move to Premier League

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) XAVI SIMONS is reportedly on the radar of Chelsea and Arsenal, with the RB Leipzig player said to be looking to move to the Premier League this summer. The Dutch star has tasked super agent Ali Barat with finding him an English club. 3 Xavi Simons is reportedly wanted by Chelsea and Arsenal Credit: Rex After Simons' current side failed to qualify for Europe this season, he began looking for a team that could provide him with Champions League football. German publication Bild report Barat, who received the Golden Boy award for Best Agent in 2023, is expected to approach Chelsea and other English sides on behalf of the 22-year-old. Both the Blues and Arsenal are said to be "attentive" over a potential deal, according to Fabrizio Romano. Chelsea have already spent big this summer, including the signings of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro, while SunSport understands they've made Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers their top target. The transfer of Simons to Stamford Bridge would increase the summer spending of the Blues even further. The Dutchman has also been linked with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, and Barcelona are also reportedly potentially interested. However, Simons himself would reportedly favour a move to the Premier League. He is a graduate of Barcelona's famous La Masia academy, where he played between the ages of seven and 16. Simons is currently valued at £60m. 3 It is not the first time the Holland international has been linked with the Prem. He has previously been on the transfer lists of Liverpool and Manchester United. Simons has been well-known for much of his life, having reached 2million Instagram followers by the time he was 16. During his time at La Masia, he was affectionately known as Golden Curls and got to meet his idol and namesake Xavi Hernandez. 3 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

The Dutch gaffer was sacked by United in October after winning just three of his opening nine league matches, with a defeat to West Ham being the final straw. But the manager's first game at the helm of the German giants ended in disaster – despite being 1/100 to win. Leverkusen travelled all the way to Brazil for Ten Hag's debut, with Leverkusen going up against Flamengo. However, it was their U20s side and not the seniors on the field. But that didn't stop the Samba kids from tearing Leverkusen apart in a 5-1 thrashing. Ten Hag named senior stars including Mark Flekken, Jonas Hoffman and Victor Boniface in his starting XI while sticking with predecessor Alonso's title-winning 3-4-2-1 formation. And he could only watch with a grimace as Flamengo took a second-minute lead before doubling the score in the 10th. Ten Hag ended up taking Flekken and Boniface off in the 36th minute.
