Former India speedster Varun Aaron joins Sunrisers Hyderabad as new bowling coach

India Gazette11 hours ago
New Delhi [India], July 14 (ANI): Sunrisers Hyderabad have roped in former India tearaway Varun Aaron as the new bowling coach ahead of the next season of the Indian Premier League.
The Sunrisers took to X on Monday to announce Varun's appointment, which read, 'A fiery addition to our coaching staff! Welcome Varun Aaron as our new bowling coach.'
Before Aaron's appointment, former New Zealand quick James Franklin served as SRH's bowling coach last season, replacing ex-South Africa speedster Dale Steyn. The 35-year-old, who announced his retirement at the beginning of the year, is set to replace Franklin and will work to fine-tune the 2016 IPL winners' bowling attack for the 19th season of the cash-rich league.
Varun was a familiar face in the cash-rich league. He represented Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings. His last appearance in the league dates back to the 2022 season. He made two appearances for Gujarat Titans, scything two wickets at an average of 26.00. Overall, Varun boasts 44 scalps in 52 matches at an average of 33.66. He lifted the title with GT in 2022.
In a country that has starved for explosive pacers, Varun announced himself to the world as a genuine quick. He made the headlines by clocking 153 kph during the 2010-11 Vijay Hazare Trophy final against Gujarat. With the sheer pace with which he bowled and consistent performances, Varun looked set to become the next big thing in the world of cricket.
Varun was awarded for his mouth-watering display in 2011 when he was named to the India Emerging Players squad that went to Australia. He earned a call-up to the India ODI squad for the series in England but sat on the bench for the entire series. Varun went on to make his ODI debut in October 2011, and a month later, he earned his maiden Test cap for India.
With the rise of a new generation of pacers, Varun's opportunities became limited. He made nine appearances in Tests and nine in ODIs. During his time in red-ball cricket, Varun picked up 18 wickets, averaging 52.61. In the 50-over format, Varun scythed 11 scalps at an average of 38.09.
Varun's last appearance in competitive cricket came in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy for Jharkhand against Goa. He ended the match with figures of 2/29 in his six-over spell as Jharkhand cruised to a comfortable 31-run victory with consummate ease. (ANI)

Kerala goes US way with college sports league

KOCHI: Kerala will host India's first-ever 'Sports League' centered around colleges in the state, in an initiative that aims to revolutionise campus sports. The first season of College Sports League-Kerala (CSL-K), organised by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs and Sports Kerala Foundation will be inaugurated on Friday, July 18. Modelled like popular collegiate sports leagues in countries like the US, specific league competitions will be held for sports like football and volleyball in the inaugural season, with more games like cricket, basketball and kabaddi being added in the coming years. 'It came to our notice that students tend to move away from sports at a high rate after they graduate from schools. Through CSL-K, we aim to develop a competitive and interesting sports environment in colleges, an environment in which more and more students will be drawn to sports. We have constituted specific sports councils in almost all colleges which will take the charge of conducting the league in their campuses,' said Sports Minister V Abdurahiman. 'Through active college leagues, students will get direct exposure to the professional ecosystem of sports more easily. Right now, we have professional events like ISL, IPL and more in several states across the country. It will also help promote sports as a career opportunity,' he said. The inaugural season's events will kick off with football league competitions at Calicut University campus from July 17 to 26, featuring 60 teams from all UGC-approved colleges in the state. The teams have been selected on the basis of criteria including previous performance and team strength. The volleyball league will take place on the MG University campus next month. 'We expect that once we launch the initiative, people will get captivated by the system. We aim to give the country a strong team at least by the 2036 Olympics. The project is being implemented using Rs 60 lakh set aside for college sports. We expect it to become self-sufficient financially in the coming years. A lot of companies like Decathlon besides several banks have already approached us for sponsorships and endorsements,' Abdurahiman said.

Stokes jokingly reveals Archer watched highlights of Ganguly waving his jersey before delivering sizzling spell against India

London [UK], July 15 (ANI): England Test captain Ben Stokes invoked laughter and revealed that tearaway Jofra Archer watched the highlights of former India captain Sourav Ganguly's famous jersey-waving moment on the Lord's balcony, which served as an inspiration and fuelled him on the final day of the enthralling third Test at Lord's. In his first Test appearance since February 2021, Archer blew away India's hopes of victory in a whisker. Within the blink of an eye, he rattled Rishabh Pant's top of the off-stump with a searing delivery to set the tempo of the day. Pant failed to grasp the rocket that Archer unleashed from his loaded arsenal. He continued to run rampant and lured Washington Sundar to push the ball back into his hands and return for a duck. He finished the second innings with figures of 3/55 as England ended Ravindra Jadeja and India's tail-end's hard-fought resistance to relish a 22-run victory at the 'Home of Cricket'. Stokes was quizzed about Archer's sizzling performance and added a touch of humour with his fancy reply. He revealed that Archer saw Ganguly's iconic moment that unfolded 23 years ago. 'Dada' waved his shirt on the Lord's balcony, an iconic scene from India's memorable NatWest final win in 2002 over England. 'I just said to him this morning, I said, 'You know what today is, don't you? And it was that highlight package from when India knocked off 300-odd back in the day, when Ganguly, he thought that was a World Cup final as well. He thought that was six years today. Genuine. And I was like, no, that World Cup that we won, he was like, oh, that one. Gosh, he's an absolute beauty, that boy,' Stokes told reporters in the post-match press conference. The date July 14 holds special significance for English cricket and its fans. On the same day in 2019, England lifted their maiden ODI World Cup title at the 'Home of Cricket'. Fast forward six years, England felt euphoria after five days of hard work, grit and resilience. On the final day, the equation remained simple: England needed six wickets to cross the line while India stood 135 runs shy of chasing the 193-run target and taking a firm grip on the series. Archer and Stokes bowl in tandem to reduce the beleaguered India from 58/4 to 82/7. Despite the odds stacked against India, Ravindra Jadeja (61*) battled with his sheer class and kept the contest alive by stitching up a valuable stand with Jasprit Bumrah. The duo withstood England for 22 overs before Bumrah holed it to Sam Cook. Mohammed Siraj kept India alive with everything he had in his batting arsenal before enduring a heartbreak after getting bowled by Bashir. (ANI)

So near, yet so far; Test to be won: Cricket fraternity reacts to India's failed heist at Lord's

London [UK], July 15 (ANI): 'Master Blaster' Sachin Tendulkar and several former cricketers hailed the troika of Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah for putting up a headstrong fight despite India enduring a 22-run heartbreak at Lord's on the final day of the third Test against England. After a dreadful batting collapse in the final hour of Day 4 and the opening phase of the final day, India fought till the last breath to keep hopes alive of salvaging a victory. In pursuit of a 193-run target on the Lord's surface that came alive in the final six sessions, India were reduced to 58/4 and then half buried in the ground, after tottering at 82/7. The chase appeared to be a lost cause, but Jadeja and Bumrah put on a stubborn stand to reignite India's hopes. The chants of 'India, India' echoed throughout the Lord's despite the overwhelming presence of English spectators. At the end, the visitors' resistance eventually gave out and surrendered to a 22-run heartbreak loss. 'So near, yet so far.... Jadeja, Bumrah, & Siraj fought all the way till the end. Well tried, Team India. England played well to keep the pressure on and produced the result they desired. Congratulations on a hard-fought win,' Sachin wrote on X. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who took off his jersey and waved it in the Lord's balcony, 23 years ago in the NatWest Series final against England, felt it was a Test to be won. 'What a test match .. India will leave Lords very disappointed .. they played so well all 3 test matches . But down 2-1 ..it was a test match to be won.. jadeja fought hard and showed 193 was not a big total ..@bcci @Teamindiacrick,' Ganguly wrote on X. Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh sees the positive side of the result. He feels that even though India ended on the wrong side of the result, the five days of pulsating battle will be remembered for the fight that the team showed. 'Not the result we wanted, but this match will be remembered for the fight we showed. @imjadeja and @mdsirajofficial stood tall in a pressure cooker situation! A performance that demands respect - not just for the skill, but for the mindset! On to the next one boys,' Yuvraj wrote on X. Former India batter Wassim Jaffer was proud of the fight that India exhibited and wrote on X, 'Heartbreaking finish but proud of the fight. Take a bow @imjadeja, what determination, what patience. What a Test match we've had. Congratulations @benstokes38 lion hearted effort from him with the ball.' According to ex-India spinner Harbhajan Singh, it wasn't India's day and wrote on X, 'Showed great commitment @imjadeja @Jaspritbumrah93 & @mdsirajofficial wasn't our day #INDvsENG @BCCI.' Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan identified the turning point of the clash and wrote on X, 'Fight shown by India but England was able to siege the crucial movements.' The game was evenly poised after both teams returned on day three. India replied to England's 387 with the exact total. Many felt the contest was fated to end in a draw, but Lord's turf changed its nature, and the ramifications became much greater. India managed to bowl out England on 192, but captain Ben Stokes and tearaway Jofra Archer breathed fire to leave India threadbare. Jadeja faced 22 overs with Bumrah and then the next 13 overs with Siraj, but failed to turn his unbeaten 61 into a match-winning score, as India fell behind 2-1 in the series. (ANI)
