Panneerselvam meets Stalin, snaps ties with NDA
'There are no permanent friends or enemies in politics. Anything can happen during elections,' OPS told reporters later.
The announcement came hours after Panneerselvam met Stalin during his morning walk. He, however, maintained that he moved on after conveying his pleasantries. Later in the day, too, OPS called on the CM at his residence, but called it a 'courtesy visit' to enquire about health. 'There were no political talks,' he asserted.
Stalin underwent a therapeutic procedure on July 24 and he was discharged on July 27 after successful recovery.
Earlier in the day, OPS's loyalist Panruti Ramachandran announced his factions exit from NDA at a press conference in Chennai. 'The reason is widely known,' he said.
Asked about the reason for his exit, OPS said: 'I did not feel disrespected (by the BJP) but I've self respect in politics. I've been with Amma (Jayalalithaa) for 25 years working in the govenrment and the party.'
He wished the EPS-led AIADMK the best for joining with the BJP.
The development comes days after OPS wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to Tamil Nadu. However, after he was denied nod, he publicly criticised the Union government on social media over the delay in disbursing Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) funds to the state.
OPS' exit also comes days after AIADMK's Muslim face and former minister, Anwhar Raajhaa quit the party to join rival DMK who said that the AIADMK was 'trapped in the BJP's hands.'
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) expelled OPS in 2022. The two had been sharing power until then to run the party. Unable to reclaim the AIADMK and losing legal battles against EPS over his expulsion, OPS contested as an independent candidate under the NDA's fold in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and lost.
Panneerselvam, who had twice been Tamil Nadu's stop-gap chief minister, was appointed chief minister for the third time in December 2016 when Jayalalithaa died. This stint, however, didn't last long and he was replaced by Palaniswami in February 2017 who then had the support of Jayalalithaa aide VK Sasikala.
The two rivals patched up in August 2017 and Panneerselvam returned to the government as Palaniswami's deputy.

Election Commission rejects Rahul Gandhi's ‘atom bomb' claims
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday termed as 'baseless and irresponsible' Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's claim his party had uncovered an 'atom bomb' of evidence proving voters lists were manipulated on a large scale, and said that it ignores such statements. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said the Congress began investigating after noticing irregularities during the Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Lok Sabha elections. 'There was a suspicion in the elections in Madhya Pradesh and the Lok Sabha, and it deepened in the Maharashtra assembly polls. At the state level, we believed there was a vote theft,' Gandhi said. 'It took us six months to study this in detail.' Gandhi issued a warning: 'Whoever is doing this, from top to bottom in the ECI, we won't spare you. You're working against the nation. This is treason.' In response, ECI said, 'The Election Commission ignores such baseless allegations being made on a daily basis and despite the daily threats being given, (it) asks all election officials to ignore such irresponsible statements and work in a fair and transparent manner.' ECI said it had sent a mail to Gandhi on June 12 after previous allegations, but had not received a response. The latest accusation comes amid a broader protest by the opposition INDIA bloc over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls, which they claim is a BJP-backed attempt to disenfranchise voters. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had also blamed the poll body on July 6, saying, 'With the cooperation of the Election Commission, the BJP's master plan to deprive crores in Bihar of their voting rights now seems to be ensnaring them. Following a joint strategy meeting, the INDIA bloc parties on Thursday announced they will intensify their protests –– both in and outside Parliament. ECI published the draft electoral rolls for Bihar on Friday. Responding to Gandhi's claim , the BJP asked him to 'flow like water' instead of considering to 'explode like a bomb'. 'Will Rahul Gandhi explode like a bomb? What do you think? Their job is to explode. They have no other work to do,' BJP leader Sambit Patra told reporters at the BJP headquarters. He said the Opposition party speaks of such things because they have no faith in democracy. 'We are those who have faith in democracy. If they explode an atom bomb, we will save the Constitution,' Patra said.

Ex-CJI Khanna to appear before joint polls House panel on Aug 19
Former CJI Sanjiv Khanna is scheduled to interact with the Joint Committee of Parliament on the 'One Nation, One Election' (ONOE) Bill, on August 19, according to the meeting notice issued on Thursday. The committee, chaired by BJP MP P P Chaudhary, has held nine meetings so far. Former CJIs D Y Chandrachud, J S Khehar and U U Lalit have already interacted with the committee. As per the notice, the committee will hold a meeting on August 11 and interact with political scientists and experts and then hold the meeting with ex-CJI Khanna. If passed, the Bills would pave the way for simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and State/UT Assemblies in 2034.
