Expert says look for penny with 'strange' error worth £600
Brits are being encouraged to keep their eyes peeled for a rare penny coin that could be worth a small fortune. This particular bronze coin, potentially fetching up to £600 at auction, boasts an unusual error that collectors covet.
Spotting the flaw might prove challenging, yet it's certainly worth the search. A coin enthusiast, known on TikTok as the Coin Collecting Wizard, delved into the details.
Showcasing a 1893 penny in a video, he said: "Hey no biggie, just another old penny worth £600. This penny has a date of 1893 and you need to check this one for a very strange error that makes the coin valuable."
As reported by the Daily Record, the coin displays the customary Britannia figure on its reverse, trident in hand. The obverse features the familiar 'bun head' portrait of Queen Victoria. But what elevates its value is a peculiar mistake in the date.
He continued: "Known as the '1893 over two penny' what you need to pay close attention to is the number '3'. As you can see under the number three it looks like there is the start of a number two."
In his video, he pointed out where the three in 1893 appears to have an additional line emerging from its centre. "The best way to notice this is where the three joins up in the middle," he advised.
"If it doesn't look like they join up neatly then you have found it. The obverse of the coin is the usual Queen Victoria bun head and the reverse is Britannia seated holding a trident."
The specialist commented: "This is such a difficult error to spot but it is well worth your time as uncirculated versions of this coin have sold for £600."
He further guided treasure hunters: "So just remember you are looking for an old English penny from 1893 but that's only the first part. The next bit you need to look for is that 'three over two error'."
Adding a tip for his followers, he said: "Save this for future reference so you know exactly what to look for. Good luck."
Despite over eight million being produced, the 1893 penny's value remains not just in the rarity of its errors; even standard versions fetch a tidy sum due to their age.
At the time of reporting, the Dorset Coin Company was selling a mint condition version of the non-error coin for £275.

For many waste-conscious customers, Too Good To Go offers the chance to nab food that would have ended up in the bin at a fraction of the original cost. But bargain hunters won't know what they are going to receive until they turn up at the shop door to collect their mystery bag. For Florence Gibbs-Price, from Yorkshire, the temptation of grabbing a delicious haul from her local Asda Express for just £4.40 convinced her to try the scheme for the very first time. But the 24-year-old would likely 'leaf' the idea alone from now on after her first-time purchased contained a bizarre assortment - of seven lettuces and more than a dozen bags of salad. The disgruntled shopper filmed herself unpacking the epic fail on TikTok, where the clip went viral and garnered more than 99,000 views. 'I was shocked that it was all the same thing - and way too much for even a family of four to consume in one night,' Florence, who works in marketing. 'The app said [it would be] sandwiches, fruit, vegetables and tinned goods, so I was hoping for more of a variety.' As well as the seven lettuces and 13 bags of salad, Florence also received a fruit pot - which she described as 'a welcome change'. She appeared visibly stunned while unpacking the vegetables, and said her 'tiny town' in the north of England meant she had fewer options on the app. In the clip, Florence says: 'It's all salad! 'You should see the state of my kitchen right now, it's just lettuce. 'What the hell am I meant to do with all these vegetables?' The clip was liked over 9,000 times, with one person commenting: 'The only logical solution is to get a rabbit or guinea pig.' 'For real though, what do they think you're going to do with it?' said another critic. Someone else added: 'Surely since it was all reduced you probably spent more than it was worth too?' 'Someone is definitely laughing about this in Asda,' another viewer wrote. Despite laughing it off, Florence said it 'definitely ruined the experience'. She complained and was given a £2.20 voucher, adding: 'I think it's a bit of a joke but I'd rather make the most of the voucher and try again at maybe a different store. 'But after that I doubt I'll use [Too Good To Go] again.'
