45 lakh electors deleted
due to reasons such as non-submission of enumeration form, not found at given address, or having changed address. The window to get back on to the electoral roll for these 45 lakh people will remain open until September 1 - the last day for filing of 'claims' for inclusion in the roll, and 'objections' to seek exclusion of any elector. The latter can be filed by electors as well as political parties.
Live Events
Electoral registration officers will address all claims and objections by September 25. The final electoral roll will be published on September 30.
The outreach
Meanwhile, the chief electoral officer (CEO) of Bihar has activated its full machinery to bring in more eligible electors into the fold. Special camps will be set up across all block-cum-circle offices (AEROs) and urban body offices (like Nagar Panchayat, Nagar Parishad, and Nagar Nigam circle offices) for submission of documents. The CEO further appealed with all political parties, seeking cooperation in ensuring accuracy of the electoral roll.

Adriana Kugler may return to Georgetown University as professor: A journey from academia to US Fed governor and back
When Dr. Adriana Kugler steps down from the Board of Governors of the US Federal Reserve on August 8, she is likely to return to a role that predates her central bank tenure: professor of Public Policy and Economics at Georgetown University. Kugler, the first Hispanic woman to serve on the Fed's Board, submitted her resignation in advance of her term's official end in January 2026. The decision comes during a politically charged period for the Federal Reserve as US President Donald Trump weighs options to shape the central bank's leadership ahead of a major transition next year. From World Bank to Washington Kugler's return to academia would close a meaningful chapter in a career that has spanned research, policymaking, and global finance. Her service on the Fed Board began in September 2023 after a presidential nomination and Senate confirmation that made headlines for the historic nature of her appointment. Prior to that, she held the role of US Executive Director at the World Bank Group and served as chief economist at the US Department of Labor between 2011 and 2013. An academic with policy roots Throughout her career, Kugler has remained deeply connected to the academic and research ecosystem. She is currently on leave from Georgetown, a university where she has long been a faculty member. She also held research affiliations with the National Bureau of Economic Research and Stanford University's Center for the Study of Poverty and Inequality. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Within professional circles, she has served as the elected chair of the Business and Economics Statistics Section of the American Statistical Association, as well as an advisory member on committees of the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the National Academies of Sciences. With a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in economics and political science from McGill University and a PhD in economics from the University of California, Berkeley, Kugler has consistently bridged rigorous academic training with policy impact. Her research contributions have touched on labor markets, education, and the economic impacts of regulation, often with a focus on data-driven policy design. A vacancy with political weight Kugler's early departure from the Federal Reserve adds a layer of complexity to the political and institutional dynamics surrounding the central bank's leadership. Under Federal Reserve rules, the chair must be chosen from among the existing members of the board. With her exit, Trump may have a limited window to nominate a new governor, someone he could eventually elevate to chair when Jerome Powell's term ends in May 2026. According to Bloomberg , the president has not yet selected a candidate, but potential names include National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and current Governor Christopher Waller. Powell, whose term as chair ends in May, retains a board seat until 2028. If he chooses not to resign, Trump will not have another opening on the board before then unless another member steps down. That makes Kugler's vacant seat an immediate opportunity for the administration. While the political implications of her resignation are likely to dominate headlines, Kugler's path back to academia underscores another story. It highlights the ongoing dialogue between research and policy, and the professionals who move between the two. Her return to Georgetown University would bring a rare combination of international policy experience, economic leadership, and academic depth to the classroom. In a time when the intersection of economics, governance, and public trust is under sharp scrutiny, voices like Kugler's remain essential not only in Washington but in shaping the next generation of economists, policymakers, and public thinkers. Bangladeshis on wrong side of change find a home in Epar Bangla
Kolkata: A year back, Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, former education minister of the Bangladesh, was attending hundreds of distress calls from Awami League (AL) leaders and workers in Dhaka. They were yearning for help as Dhaka was reeling from violence. As the mayhem began in the form of a bloody uprising against the then Sheikh Hasina-led govt, Dhaka turned unsafe for not just Chowdhury but several others. "I was in charge of the organisation of the party. I had to leave the city. Over the next month, I kept on changing addresses until I managed to come to India," said Chowdhury. His family members were in Thailand for a medical emergency involving his wife and were saved. Followers of Sheikh Hasina—now in exile, said on Monday the "upsurge" was pre-planned to "trick" Awami League workers into staying at home when the protesters took to the streets, leading to mass destruction. Quader is now in exile in Kolkata. According to a spokesperson of AL, now in Kolkata, a curfew was imposed in Dhaka on the evening of Aug 4, and the army requested AL leaders to stay indoors. "We decided to stay back as we wanted people to follow the same. Meanwhile, the march to Dhaka programme—that was scheduled to be held on Aug 6—was suddenly conducted a day before. None of our leaders and workers were on the road when the protesters entered the city," the spokesperson said. He wanted to remain anonymous as he felt there is still a risk of his family members being attacked in Bangladesh. According to Chowdhury, nearly 4,000 AL workers and leaders escaped the attacks and managed to enter India through land and air routes. Bikash Haldar, a functionary of Yuva League (youth wing of AL), had his marriage reception on Aug 5 when a mob set his house ablaze. Haldar and his family members managed to escape after jumping from the terrace. He broke his leg and continued to remain in hiding with his family members until he was rescued by police. He entered India on a medical visa and stayed at a relative's house in Barasat. "I am in touch with nearly 200 party workers who have taken shelter in India. Many of them have their family members in Bangladesh. They are somehow managing to arrange a meal for themselves," Haldar said. Atiqullah Munim, another youth wing functionary of the AL, reached India in Sept. "My house was burnt down, and we had taken shelter at our party office in Barishal. They set that on fire too, and we managed to escape. For days and nights, we ran for our lives and finally managed to reach India," he said. Munim, who is staying at Barasat, meets his party colleagues in India once a fortnight. "We are going through the toughest time. But we have not lost our hopes. We are in touch with the central leaders and waiting for Sheikh Hasina 's orders. We cannot be obliterated," he said.

BJP protests against mayor, demands audit of smart city funds
Ludhiana: The local unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its protest against Ludhiana mayor Inderjit Kaur, accusing her of misbehaving with party councillors and mishandling civic issues. The protest, which entered its fourth consecutive day on Monday, began after councillors were allegedly mistreated during a meeting with the mayor on August 1 regarding public works. Leading the charge, Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar joined the protest and launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and chief minister Bhagwant Mann, calling it "arrogant" and "unaccountable." Jakhar condemned the FIR registered against BJP councillors, saying that they were simply raising questions in public interest. He also raised concerns over alleged corruption in the Municipal Corporation, particularly in the utilisation of Rs 900 crore allocated under the Smart City Mission. He announced that the BJP would approach the central government to demand a time-bound audit of funds to uncover the truth behind their usage. "The mayor should not just apologise to councillors but to the public whose development works are being ignored," Jakhar said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like It's Genius for Learning Languages [See Why] Talkpal AI Undo He emphasised that questioning the ruling party is the duty of the opposition and should not be criminalised. He also accused the mayor of prioritising political bias over development and vowed that the BJP would fight for its self-respect and the rights of the people. Jakhar took aim at CM Bhagwant Mann, accusing him of being disconnected from ground realities. "While Punjab struggles with drug abuse and corruption, the CM is busy telling jokes," he said. Jakhar expressed disappointment that Mann, who was in Ludhiana on Monday, did not intervene to resolve the issue. The BJP leader also targeted newly appointed minister Sanjeev Arora, demanding transparency over alleged conflict of interest. He said Arora's resignation from his companies was not enough and urged the CM to ensure accountability. The protest has had ripple effects on local party operations. The election of the BJP's Ludhiana district president has been delayed due to the ongoing agitation at MC Zone D office, where the protest is being staged. In a symbolic gesture, mayor Inderjit Kaur sent samosas and tea to the protesting BJP leaders through zonal commissioner Jasdev Sekhon, which was seen by many as an attempt to pacify tensions. However, Jakhar did not relent, criticising the government's land pooling policy, warning that it would further erode trust in the administration. Starting Tuesday, BJP leaders plan to take the protest to their respective wards, signalling a broader campaign against the mayor and the ruling party's governance in Ludhiana. MSID:: 123097410 413 |
