
Pea shortage fears over earliest harvest in 14 years
Some areas experienced three heatwaves in quick succession in June and July, with the intense warmth drawing more moisture out of the soil.Henry Moreton, a regional NFU chair in Lincolnshire, said crops had been "drying out and dying because of the extreme heat and the lack of moisture"."The east coast is your primary vining pea land. It's all good, well drained land that peas like to grow on. But it's not looking good at the moment. I've never known the viners go out so early. I really haven't."The British peas will be in short supply this year but, unless the rain does something really amazing or unless there's a really good end to the season, we are going to look at shortages."
Ian Watson is an operations manager for a pea grower in Louth called Stemgold Peas which works with more than 3,500 farms across Lincolnshire. They usually produce about 6,000 tonnes of peas a year, of which 5,000 are sold frozen while the remainder are tinned.He said their harvesting period would normally begin in the middle of June and continue until the end of August, but this year the harvest started on 4 June "which is incredibly early". "We've seen challenges right from the start of the season whereby soils have been very dry, very hard, very difficult to work," said Mr Watson. "We're seeing very, very thin crops. They're not going to yield."
Mr Watson said the crops were so stressed by the weather, the number of peas in a pod had dropped by more than half, from up to 10 to "two big round peas and the rest have shrivelled up and died"."In some instances, we're going to actually lose crops," he said. "It's not just here. They're finding the same further south into Norfolk and east Suffolk. They're having an even worse time than we are."Mr Watson said the recent rainfall was "too little, too late" and feared a "shortage of UK-grown peas".
Tom Screeton works as a senior agriculture fieldsman at Birds Eye looking after pea fields in East Yorkshire. The company works with more than 250 growers who usually harvest about 35,000 tonnes of peas a year in total.He said the drought meant the peas were maturing at a faster rate than they were able to be harvested."We have a two-and-a-half-hour window to get these peas from being picked fresh in the field to being frozen at the end of the line in the factory. That process involves the harvesting, then haulage into the factory from up to 40 miles (64km) away, and then freezing when it gets to Hull. "So the fact that whole process has moved so much more quickly has been quite a challenge."
Michelle Lawrie is a quality manager at Birds Eye, checking the condition of the harvested produce. A pea taster, she samples about 32 plates of peas on a daily basis during the season."The sweetness depends on the weather. This year in particular we've had a lot of sun so the peas are very, very sweet this year - exceptionally so."Mr Screeton said the firm was looking at ways to mitigate challenges brought on by the fluctuating extreme weather. Last year, the wet spring meant farmers struggled to plant crops in time and resulted in a longer harvest with peas not maturing."I think going forward we can work on building more robust varieties as part of our breeding programme with more drought tolerant and stress resistant varieties."That's an ongoing process, but fundamentally with mother nature we're at the mercy of the elements and we just have to manage it as best we can."

SUMMER isn't over yet, which means plenty of us will still be spending time in the garden. As a result, he's advised households to be wary about how long different types of bird food are left outside. He said: "Regardless of the type, bird food left outside should be monitored regularly. "Signs it needs replacing include mould, a sour or rancid smell, unusual colouring or the presence of insects. "Even in cooler temperatures, food shouldn't be left out indefinitely without being checked. Fresh food not only keeps birds healthy but also encourages them to keep returning." Richard also revealed that there are certain bird foods that are more prone to spoiling that garden fanatics should be aware of. Nuts and dried fruits He said: "Nuts and dried fruits offer energy-rich nutrition but aren't as hardy outdoors. "They generally need replacing after one to four weeks, especially in warmer or wetter weather. Their high fat and sugar content can lead to faster spoilage, and they may attract insects if left out too long." "In cool weather, they can stay fresh for up to two months, but in warm conditions, they may soften, melt or spoil much sooner. 'To avoid wasting food, place suet in shaded areas and only put out as much as birds are likely to eat within a few days during summer." Seed-based bird food Richard also said that the freshness of seed mixes, one of the most common bird feed options, can vary. He said: "Depending on the weather, they may last anywhere from two weeks to six months. Rain and humidity are major issues, as damp conditions can quickly cause seeds to go mouldy. 'Seeds with higher oil content, like sunflower seeds, are also more likely to spoil quickly in the heat. Feeders placed in shaded, elevated spots will give seeds a better chance of lasting longer." So if you're looking to give birds the healthiest option with in your garden, Richard insists that pellet food is the way to go. He concluded: "Pellets tend to hold up better outdoors than loose seed. Their low moisture content makes them more resistant to the elements, and they can last several months outside in mild, dry conditions. "However, in humid or wet weather, they can still become soft or attract mould. 'Checking feeders after rain and clearing out soggy or clumped pellets helps prevent waste and keeps the food safe for birds. 'A few minutes spent checking feeders can help protect local birdlife from illness and ensure your garden stays a welcoming, safe place for wildlife.' Warning after two teens rescued from rocky ledge
Two teenagers were rescued after becoming trapped on a rocky ledge with a fast-approaching tide. Rescuers abseiled down a cliff to reach the boys, who were stuck at Greenaway Beach in Polzeath, Cornwall, as waves swept in at about 18:10 BST on 26 Coastguard's has now issued a warning to other swimmers after the incident. Senior Coastal Operations Officer Robin Snuggs said: "It goes to show how easy it is to be caught out by the tide, particularly if you're visiting a place you don't know well and you're by the cliffs. Tides can come in at different levels on different days." Luckily, a member of the public dialled 999 when they spotted the teenagers on the had to "battle large breaking waves and unsteady cliff face as they recovered the boys one by one", according to HM Coastguard Padstow's Instagram Snuggs advised people to check tide times and stay aware of the state of the water. He added that people should be careful around cliffs and carry a mobile phone.

Rare cloud formation spotted during Storm Floris
A rare and striking cloud formation has been photographed over is a thick, wave-like pattern which was only added to official lists in recent Webster, a keen photographer of natural phenomena, captured the spectacle over Long Eaton as Storm Floris swept across the UK on said: "It was super eye-catching. It was just something I had never seen before." Mr Webster added: "I am an astronomer and I keep an eye on what is going on up there."I like nature at its most extreme. I like going out to see the volcanoes in Iceland, or when there is a thunderstorm, I'll do my best to safely witness that."My motivation lies in the awesome, almost incomprehensible power of nature."Humans, no matter how hard we try, could never compare to the power that made those clouds." Meteorologist Kaye Forster said: "Asperitas clouds are fairly rare and newly recognised clouds. "They were officially named by the World Meteorological Organisation in 2017 and are spotted in the UK only a few times a year."It is not fully understood how these clouds are formed but like any 'wave-like' clouds they take their shape by vertical, up-and-down motions in the atmosphere, such as gravity waves. "They need an unstable atmosphere where the air can rise and fall quickly, allowing rapid change. "So it is no wonder that these clouds were formed around Storm Floris on Monday, when the atmosphere was very volatile."
