CAIRO : Saudi Arabia announced on Sunday the planned establishment of a new national low-cost airline with a fleet of 45 planes to be ready by 2030, state media reported.
The UAE's carrier Air Arabia was among an alliance of three companies that won a bid to operate the new airline, the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation said.
The new carrier would operate domestic and international flights from and to King Fahd international airport in Dammam, the authority added.
The airline will serve 24 domestic destinations and 57 international destinations, with the aim of transporting 10 million passengers annually, state media said.

MAHB: KLIA, Penang Airport add five new routes, strengthen Malaysia's aviation hub status

KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 — KL International Airport (KLIA) and Penang International Airport (PEN) strengthened Malaysia's position as a global aviation hub with the addition of five new international air services in June 2025. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) said in a statement that two of the new services were introduced by new airline partners, enhancing cross-border connectivity and regional access. Cambodia Airways (KR) launched a twice-weekly service between Phnom Penh and PEN, while Juneyao Air (HO) began operating four weekly flights from Shanghai to KLIA, boosting travel options for passengers from China and the wider East Asia region. In addition, MAHB said three new routes were introduced by existing airline partners, reflecting continued confidence in Malaysia's aviation market. 'Batik Air Malaysia commenced a twice-weekly service between KLIA and Dili, Timor-Leste; AirAsia Cambodia introduced a thrice-weekly route connecting KLIA to Sihanoukville; and AirAsia began operating four weekly flights between KLIA and Darwin, Australia,' MAHB said. In June, MAHB including its asset in Turkiye, Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (ISG) handled a total of 12.7 million passenger movements. 'Of this, local airports in Malaysia contributed 68 per cent or 8.5 million passenger movements, comprising 4.2 million international and 4.3 million domestic travellers. ISG recorded 4.1 million total passenger movements, comprising 2.2 million international and 1.9 million domestic in June,' MAHB said. Meanwhile, on the local front, MAHB said Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB) posted notable month-on-month growth in June, with passenger movements rising 9 per cent from 138,000 in May to 151,000. The airport operator noted that international traffic at SZB grew by over 10 per cent to 40,000 passengers, while domestic movements climbed nearly 9 per cent to 111,000. MAHB attributed this upward trend to strong average load factors of over 70 per cent on key regional routes operated by Firefly Airlines to Seletar, Scoot to Changi, and TransNusa Airlines to Jakarta. While the increased domestic travel was also spurred by the harvest festival in Sabah and Sarawak, as well as Hari Raya Haji celebrations coinciding with school holidays. — Bernama

Surge in conflicts fuels extreme poverty, says World Bank

The World Bank Group noted that high-intensity conflicts are typically followed by a decline of around 20% in GDP per capita after five years. (Reuters pic) WASHINGTON : Conflicts and related fatalities have more than tripled since the early 2000s, fuelling extreme poverty, the World Bank said today. Economies in fragile and conflict-affected regions have become 'the epicentre of global poverty and food insecurity, a situation increasingly shaped by the frequency and intensity of conflict', the bank added in a new study. This year, 421 million people get by on less than US$3 a day in places hit by conflict or instability – a situation of extreme poverty – and the number is poised to hit 435 million by 2030. Global attention has been focused on conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East for the past three years, said World Bank Group chief economist Indermit Gill. But 'half of the countries facing conflict or instability today have been in such conditions for 15 years or more,' he added. Currently, 39 economies are classified as facing such conditions, and 21 of them are in active conflict, the Washington-based development lender said. The list includes Ukraine, Somalia, South Sudan and the West Bank and Gaza. It also includes Iraq although not Iran. The report flagged that moves to prevent conflict can bring high returns, with timely interventions being 'far more cost-effective than responding after violence erupts'. It also said that some of these economies have advantages that could be used to reignite growth, noting that places like Zimbabwe, Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo are rich in minerals key to clean tech like electric vehicles and solar panels. 'Economic stagnation – rather than growth – has been the norm in economies hit by conflict and instability over the past decade and a half,' said Ayhan Kose, World Bank Group deputy chief economist. The bank's report noted that high-intensity conflicts, which kill more than 150 per million people, are typically followed by a cumulative fall of around 20% in GDP per capita after five years.

Iran accuses Europeans of not respecting 2015 nuclear deal

Iran is the only non-nuclear-armed country currently enriching uranium to 60%. (Atomic Energy Organization of Iran/AP pic) TEHRAN : Tehran today accused Britain, France and Germany of failing to respect the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, after they threatened to re-impose sanctions over its atomic programme. The 2015 deal, reached between Iran and the UN Security Council's permanent members – Britain, China, France, Russia and the US – plus Germany imposed curbs on Iran's nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief. But it unravelled when the US in 2018, during Donald Trump's first term as president, unilaterally withdrew from the accord and re-imposed sweeping sanctions. The Europeans had pledged continued support for the deal, but the mechanism intended to offset US sanctions never materialised effectively and many western firms were forced to exit Iran, which has since faced a deepening economic crisis. 'The European parties have been at fault and negligent in implementing' the nuclear agreement, said Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei. The International Atomic Energy Agency says Iran is the only non-nuclear-armed country currently enriching uranium to 60% – far beyond the 3.67% cap set by the 2015 accord. That is a short step from the 90% required for a nuclear weapon. In recent weeks, France, Britain and Germany have threatened to trigger the UN snapback mechanism to re-impose sanctions on Tehran, accusing Iran of breaching its nuclear commitments. Using this clause 'is meaningless, unjustifiable and immoral', Baqaei told a news conference, arguing that Iran only began distancing itself from the agreement in response to western non-compliance. 'Iran's reduction of its commitments was carried out in accordance with the provisions outlined in the agreement,' the foreign ministry spokesman added.
