Dates for local body elections to be announced after completion of exercises, says Maharashtra state election commissioner
"It would not be possible for the state election commission (SEC) to specify the schedule and dates for the elections at this juncture, since important exercises are being carried out to ensure that the polls take place smoothly," Waghmare told TOI.
According to him, ward formation exercises are currently underway in the local bodies where the polls will be conducted. "Once this is completed, the SEC would start the task of earmarking the wards that would be reserved in each local body.
Thereafter, the preparation of the electoral rolls would take place," he added.

"All these exercises are long-drawn and time-consuming. Once these exercises are completed, SEC would be in a position to specify the poll schedule," Waghmare said.
He added that the SEC is also preparing details about the requirements of EVMs and polling stations to conduct the elections.
The elections for the local bodies have been significantly delayed.

In May 2025, the Supreme Court gave its nod to the SEC to conduct the polls.
There are over 600 local bodies in the state, including 29 municipal corporations and 34 zilla parishads, where the polls will be conducted.
Meanwhile, NCP cabinet minister Chhagan Bhujbal predicted the local bodies polls are likely to take place between Nov and Dec 2023.
"My feedback is that polls would be held in phases. Initially, the elections for the small local bodies would be held, followed by the polls for the zilla parishads.
In the final phase, the polls for the municipal corporations would take place," Bhujbal said.
According to Bhujbal, the SEC needs time to prepare well for the polls, which is a huge exercise.
A section of the politicians said parties will start their groundwork to contest the polls after the monsoon session of the assembly wraps up.
Sources both in Mahayuti and Maha Vikas Aghadi said the two coalitions are likely to contest the polls in alliance, as was the case during the parliamentary and assembly polls.
"There could be some exceptions, where in a few of the local bodies, Mahayuti partners could contest the polls independently as a tie-up would not be possible," said a Mahayuti politician.
According to a senior state Congress functionary, the party would like to have an alliance with NCP (SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT) in the elections. "The top brass would soon meet to discuss the alliance issue," said the Congress politician.

After Chavan leaves NCP red-faced, party says it has taken note of Kokate's behaviour
After NCP youth wing chief Suraj Chavan and 11 of the unit's members were booked for beating up Chhava Sanghatna activists in Latur, Deputy Chief Minister and party's national president Ajit Pawar asked him to quit his post. Chavan was summoned to Mumbai and pulled up by the NCP chief 'for exceeding his brief and indulging in activity which harmed the party's image'. Though he has not shown the same kind of alacrity in the case of Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate, NCP state president Sunil Tatkare made it clear that the party leadership has taken serious note of his behaviour. 'Our party leadership has taken serious note of the minister's behaviour,' Tatkare told The Indian Express on Monday evening. When asked whether Ajit Pawar will ask Kokate to resign, Tatkare said he wouldn't like to make any comment. 'I have already said our party leadership has taken serious note of Kokate's behaviour in the House,' he said. Both Kokate and Chavan's behaviour has caused embarrassment to the NCP. So much so that when Ajit Pawar was in Pune on Sunday, he spoke at length about different issues including the Hinjewadi problems. But when reporters sought a reply from him on Kokate case, Ajit Pawar quickly made a gateway. However, in Chavan's case, Ajit Pawar, wasted no time in clarifying that the party does not believe in any kind of violence and rude behaviour. He condemned the behaviour of NCP workers in strong words. NCP sources said in Chavan's case, the party acted quickly because there was no need for him to beat up the Chhava Sanghatna activists. 'The incident has tarnished the image of NCP. Chhava Sanghatna activists did not indulge in any kind of violence. They might have used objectionable language but why did Chavan and his supporters gets physical? The party's image has taken a beating,' an NCP leader said. In Kokate's case, NCP leaders said, Ajit Pawar has shown lot of patience. 'Kokate has caused the party embarrassment on several occasions. He has been convicted in a criminal case. He was sentenced to two years in jail in a document forgery and fraud case. Then he compared farmers to beggars. He had said that even a beggar doesn't take one rupee, but the government offers farmers crop insurance for Re one. Subsequently, he alleged that farmers take advantage of loan waivers by spending money on personal celebrations… I think the party's cup of woes relating to Kokate and his behaviour is overflowing now. The party will ask him to resign in next two days after consulting BJP,' said another NCP leader. Speaking in Nashik, senior NCP leader and Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said, 'I am not aware of what orders Ajit Pawar has given regarding Kokate. As far as playing cards in the House is concerned, I don't think that was an appropriate act.' Shiv Sena Minister Pratap Sarnaik however backed Kokate. 'I think everyone plays Rummy these days. Even Aamir Khan and Shahrukh play Rummy. It is shown on television,' he said.

‘Rummy' video row: Clamour grows for sacking of Maharashtra agri minister Kokate
A political storm erupted on Sunday after NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar posted Kokate's video clip on his X handle. Amid the growing clamour for Kokate's resignation, NCP state president Sunil Tatkare said the party head and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar will take a serious note of the video and talk to the minister accordingly. Mumbai, July 21 (PTI) In fresh trouble for embattled Maharashtra agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate, NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad on Monday posted two videos claiming that the NCP leader was playing Junglee rummy on his mobile phone during the recent monsoon session of the state legislature. Facing flak, the minister clarified on Sunday that he was only trying to skip the downloaded rummy game on his mobile phone in the legislative council. On Monday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also expressed his displeasure over Kokate's video clip. 'It doesn't look good. Even if a minister wasn't participating in proceedings (of legislature), some seriousness needs to be shown,' he told reporters. Fadnavis also stressed that Kokate had clarified that he wasn't playing any game and that a notification had popped up on the screen of his mobile phone. Awhad posted two videos claiming that the NCP leader was playing Junglee rummy on his mobile phone during the recent monsoon session of the state legislature. He was checking his phone when the Upper House of the state legislature was adjourned. 'Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate was playing Junglee Rummy when the legislature proceedings were underway and the question hour had started,' Awhad stated on X. 'Now, I'm providing two videos. Watch both videos carefully… you'll see which card was moved where and how. Manikrao Kokate himself is sliding the cards of online gambling with his fingers. Tell me, how much more evidence is needed? I'll provide as much evidence as you ask for'. Awhad alleged that Kokate has turned Maharashtra itself into a 'game of gambling'. Responding to the criticism, Kokate had said, 'When the upper house of the state legislature was adjourned, I took out my mobile phone to check the business transacted in the lower house and was trying to open YouTube. 'The downloaded game suddenly opened, and I was skipping it. It was a matter of just 5 to 10 seconds; why that part was not shown?' he had told reporters. Tatkare, meanwhile, said, 'The statements made by the agriculture minister in the past were not correct. Party president Ajit Pawar had earlier spoken to him about that. In this video issue also, Pawar will take a serious note, and instructions will be given to Kokate accordingly'. Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal also slammed the state government, accusing ministers and office-bearers of the ruling parties of being arrogant and insensitive towards farmers' issues. Six farmers were committing suicide daily in Maharashtra, while Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate was seen playing an online game during the legislature session, Sapkal claimed and demanded immediate dismissal of the minister. 'The agriculture minister insults farmers, calls them beggars and claims they spend loan waiver amount on marriages. Now he is seen playing a game on his mobile phone. What is wrong with protesting against the minister? Arrogance of power doesn't last long,' Sapkal said. Sapkal's colleague Nana Patole also demanded that Kokate be dropped from the Fadnavis cabinet. 'The government must seek his resignation if it has any shame. Ours is an agrarian economy. How can the agriculture minister sit in the House and play mobile phone games instead of framing policies for the welfare of farmers?' Patole told reporters in Bhandara. In a related development, eleven workers of the Ajit Pawar-led NCP were booked on Monday in Latur in connection with the beating up of Chhava Sanghatna activists following a press conference of Tatkare a day earlier. The NCP workers had assaulted the Chhava Sanghatna activists after the latter confronted Tatkare over a video of Kokate. Based on the complaint of Chhava Sanghatna leader Vijay Ghadge, who was severely beaten up, 11 NCP workers were booked under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Maharashtra Police Act for causing grievous hurt, criminal intimidation and other offences, a Vivekanand Chowk police station official said. Taking a serious note of the incident, Ajit Pawar on Monday asked his party's youth wing chief Suraj Chavan to resign from his post. The strict decision has been taken as his behaviour goes against the party's values and will not be tolerated, Pawar, who had summoned Chavan to meet him, said in a statement. Pawar said he has asked his party workers to always uphold the values of democracy, peace and non-violence in public life. Meanwhile, workers from several political parties, including the Congress and Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP), and social outfits called for a Latur 'bandh' (shutdown) on Monday against the assault and held a protest at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk at 9am. A group of activists from the Chhava Sanghatna allegedly attempted to set fire to the Nationalist Congress Party's office in Maharashtra's Jalna, police said on Monday. Speaking about Sunday's clash, Maharashtra Revenue Minister and senior BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule said people working in politics should not take the law into their own hands. Kokate had courted a string of controversies in the past over his 'insulting' remarks against farmers. PTI MR AW COR ARU GK BNM NSK This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
