The Hindu3 days ago
A week after Gokarna police rescued a 40-year-old Russian woman and her two minor daughters, aged six and four, from a cave in the Ramateertha Hills on Wednesday, the police sent the trio to the Foreigners Restriction Centre for Women in Tumakuru until repatriation.
A team of Gokarna police escorted the trio to the restriction centre.
The woman, identified as Nina Kutina alias Mohi, along with her two daughters was living in near-complete isolation for nearly two weeks. According to the police, she came to India on a business visa, which expired in 2017.
The Gokarna police who were on routine patrolling duty on Wednesaday evening found her in the cave and along with the help of others, rescued her .
She told the police that she had come to Gokarna from Goa and stayed in a cave to meditate as she is inclined towards spirituality. She was practising meditation and Hindu rituals inside the cave.
The area where she was living in was termed dangerous after the July 2024 landslide incident. The officials counselled her and managed to convince that how staying in the cave is unsafe for her and her children .
The police along with forest officials also started a combing operation in the area after she told the police that she had lost her passport and travel documents .
After several hours of search operations, the officials found the passport and visa which had expired on April 17, 2017. The Foreigners Regional Registration Office Goa on April 19, 2018 issued an exit permit from where she went to Nepal and returned to India again, M. Narayana, Superintendent of Police, Uttara Kannada district, said .

Five arrested in rowdy sheeter murder case in Bengaluru; MLA Basavaraj summoned

The city police on Thursday arrested five people in connection with the murder of 44-year-old rowdy-sheeter Shivaprakash in east Bengaluru's Bharathinagar on Tuesday. Former Urban Development Minister and MLA Byrathi Basavaraj, who was among five persons booked for the murder, has been served a notice to appear before the police, according to D. Devaraj, DCP, East. The arrested have been identified as Kiran, Vimal, Pradeep, Madan, and Samuel. A Bengaluru court on Thursday granted 10-day custody of the suspects to the police. Considering the gravity of the case, Prakash Rathode, Assistant Commissioner of Police, K.G. Halli, has been named as the investigating officer. Shivaprakash, a rowdy sheeter and realtor, was allegedly hacked to death by a group of unidentified assailants near his house in Bharathinagar on Tuesday. The FIR was registered based on a complaint by Vijayalakshmi, the mother of the deceased, who witnessed the murder on July 15. According to the complainant, on July 15, around 8.10 p.m., a group of unidentified assailants attacked Shivaprakash when he was standing outside their house at Bharathinagar with his driver Imran Khan and friend Lokesh. When Imran Khan tried to rescue Shivaprakash, he was also attacked. She said she saw Lokesh filming the attack on his mobile phone. She screamed for help, and seeing people rush to the spot, the assailants fled, but by then, Shivaprakash was dead, the complainant said. The complainant also said that Shivaparakash had been engaged in the real estate business, as part of Extreme Point (Promoters and Developers) Private Limited, for the past year. She said her son had gotten a General Power of Attorney (GPA) for a plot of land at Kothanur in 2023. He had built a shed and arranged for two women to live there as security guards. Then in February 2025, two men — Jagadish alias Jagga and Kiran — trespassed into the plot of land and threw out the two women living there. Ms. Vijayalakshmi claimed that later, Jagadish called Shivaparakash, threatening to 'not let him be alive' if he doesn't transfer the GPA to his name, as it was 'his area'. Shivaprakash had also complained about the threats to the police. According to the FIR, he was allegedly murdered by eight persons who were instigated by the MLA for K.R. Puram, Byrathi Basavaraj. Mr. MLA Basavaraj has been listed as accused number five in the case.

Melania Disapproves Of Putin's Actions In Ukraine? Trump Shares What She Told Him

Last Updated: Donald Trump said Melania influenced his views on Vladimir Putin, changing his initial impressions of the Russian leader. US President Donald Trump revealed- during a White House meeting- that his wife Melania Trump had shaped his views on Russian President Vladimir Putin as she offered a sharply skeptical contrast to his own initial impressions of the Moscow leader and his war in Ukraine. 'My conversations with Putin are always very pleasant," Donald Trump said while seated alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, adding, 'I say, isn't that a very lovely conversation? And then the missiles go off that night." He continued with a personal anecdote, saying, 'I go home, I tell the First Lady: I spoke with Vladimir today. We had a wonderful conversation. She said: 'Really? Another city was just hit.'" Born in Slovenia, formerly part of Yugoslavia, Melania Trump has carried a personal perspective on Europe's turbulent geopolitics. In 2022, shortly after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, she broke her usual silence on policy matters by urging donations to the Red Cross, calling the images from Ukraine 'heartbreaking and horrific". On Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump further said, 'Look, I don't want to say he's an assassin. But he's a tough guy. It's been proven over the years. He's fooled a lot of people." The remarks comes as Donald Trump announced that the United States will be sending additional Patriot air-defense batteries and interceptor missiles to Ukraine, with costs covered by European allies. The US President confirmed the systems would be delivered 'within days" and financed by Germany and other NATO members. Ukraine currently has six functioning Patriot systems and the newly pledged units are expected to bolster its defences significantly amid continued Russian missile and drone attacks on major cities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the support in his nightly address, saying, 'I am grateful to President Trump for his readiness to support the protection of our people's lives." view comments First Published: July 15, 2025, 18:16 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'Training Professional Destabilisers': Russia Brands Yale University As ‘Undesirable'

Last Updated: Russia's prosecutor's office claims Yale is working to undermine the country's sovereignty and economy. Russia has added Yale University to its list of 'undesirable" organisations, accusing the American institution of working to destabilize the country and undermine its sovereignty. In a statement issued Tuesday, the Russian federal prosecutor's office said Yale was engaged in activities 'aimed at violating the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation, enforcing an international blockade against the country, undermining its economic foundations and destabilizing the socio-economic and political situation within Russia". The designation bans Yale from operating in Russia and exposes any Russian entities or individuals engaging with it to potential legal penalties. On Wednesday, the Russian foreign ministry in a social media post highlighted the message and spokesperson Maria Zakharova also discussed it during the weekly press briefing. 'Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has finally drawn a line under this long overdue matter — Yale University's activities have been declared undesirable in Russia. Behind its polished facade, Yale University is training professional destabilisers rather than 'global leaders"," Zakharova said. view comments First Published: July 09, 2025, 19:43 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
