NDTV8 hours ago
New Delhi:
Parts of the city were lashed by rain on Sunday evening, bringing relief from the humid weather. The weather department has issued a red alert for more showers over the next few hours and throughout Monday.
The weather department, in its latest forecast, said a cloud mass approaching from the southeast may cause light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over parts of Delhi-NCR.
A red alert indicates vigilance, according to the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) colour code.
Sunday's maximum temperature was recorded at 38.4 degrees Celsius, while the minimum settled at 25.1 degrees Celsius -- 2.2 notches below the season's average.
For Monday, the department has forecast cloudy skies and moderate rainfall across the city. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 33 and 26 degrees Celsius.
The air quality was recorded in the 'satisfactory' category at 4 pm on Sunday, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 86, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed.
An AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 to 100 'satisfactory', 101 to 200 'moderate', 201 to 300 'poor', 301 to 400 'very poor', and 401 to 500 'severe', according to the CPCB.

Delhi breathes easy: Rain keeps AQI below 100 for most of July

As rain continues to lash Delhi, the Capital has seen cleaner than usual air this year. Even as July and August are among the months when air quality is typically at its best in the city, because of a change in wind patterns and frequent rain due to monsoon, the Capital's AQI remained under 100 — either good or satisfactory – on 12 of 13 days this month. After heavy showers on Saturday afternoon, rain lashed the city on Sunday evening too, and the AQI was recorded at 79 (satisfactory). The predominant wind direction in Delhi is northwesterly and westerly. During monsoon, the direction of the wind is easterly and southeasterly. These moisture-laden winds do not carry as many pollutants, and Delhi's air, as a result, becomes cleaner. Frequent showers also help. On Sunday, Safdarjung received 14.1 mm of rain. Pragati Maidan received 21.1 mm and 13.5 mm of rain was recorded at the Pusa weather station. The city experienced gusty winds, reaching up to 57 kmph at Pragati Maidan, 55 kmph at Palam, and 37 kmph at Mayur Vihar. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), moderate rain is expected on Monday, followed by light rain through the week. Sunday's maximum temperature was 34.8 degrees Celsius, a degree below normal. The minimum temperature settled at 25.1 degrees Celsius, 2 degrees below normal. On Monday, the maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be between 33 and 26 degrees Celsius. Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, meanwhile, attributed the clean air to measures implemented by the government as part of the Environment Action Plan 2025. 'We are seeing a consistent pattern of better air days during months that have typically recorded higher pollution. The focus continues to be on steady implementation — from enforcement to landfill operations — to support sustainable outcomes,' he said. The monsoon plantation drive, meanwhile, kicked off in several parts of the city, with L-G V K Saxena and MP Bansuri Swaraj planting trees at SP Marg. Similar drives were undertaken in Qutubgarh. The Delhi government has planned to plant 70 lakh trees and shrubs this year.

The IMD has linked the current activity to an active monsoon phase spreading across north India. Light to moderate showers are likely to continue across parts of Haryana, Delhi NCR, and western UP over the next 48 hours, with the possibility of intense spells in isolated locations. While rain is expected to bring in temporary relief from heat and humidity, it is also expected to test urban infrastructure in several rapidly growing cities across the state. Meanwhile, several parts of Delhi were hit by an intense spell of rain on Sunday evening, accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of up to 57 kmph. While light to moderate rain is expected on Monday, the weather department has forecast scattered rain activity to continue for a week starting Tuesday. However, there is no colour-coded weather warning issued for the upcoming days. The maximum temperature was recorded at 34.8 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal, on Sunday. However, the RMC issued a warning that heavy rain was likely to occur across isolated places over Meghalaya and Mizoram on Monday, but hot and humid weather would continue over parts of Assam. According to Met office predictions, maximum temperature is likely to be above the normal by 3 to 5 degrees over some parts of Assam on Monday.
