ITR utilities not live yet: Will the e-filing deadline be extended?

India Today26-05-2025
The Income Tax Department has already released all the Income Tax Return (ITR) forms for the assessment year 2025-26. These include ITR-1 to ITR-7, and even a new form called ITR-U. This new ITR-U form lets taxpayers file or fix returns for up to 48 months, as allowed under the latest Finance Act.But even with all these forms ready and available for download, there's a small hiccup as taxpayers still can't file their returns online. That's because the filing tools, also known as utilities, are not yet live on the official income tax website.advertisementWHAT ARE ITR FILING UTILITIES?Filing utilities are tools provided by the Income Tax Department to help taxpayers submit their returns online. Last year, it was available in three formats—online, offline (in Java or JSON), and Excel. Most salaried individuals prefer using the online option as it comes with pre-filled details like salary, interest income, and tax deducted. You can review this, make corrections if needed, and then file the return.
On the other hand, tax professionals often use the offline or Excel formats, which require downloading the form, filling it out on your system, and uploading it back to the portal.WHY IS THERE A DELAY IN UTILITIES THIS YEAR?The tax department hasn't given an official reason for the delay. But experts believe it might be because of the changes made to the ITR forms this year. These updates could take extra time to reflect in the software tools.WILL THE DELAY PUSH THE FILING DEADLINE?advertisementMany taxpayers are wondering if the delay in these filing tools means the return filing deadline will be pushed. But that's unlikely. The deadline for those who don't need to get their accounts audited remains July 31, 2025.Historically, most taxpayers file their returns in June or July anyway, so the department still has enough time to get things up and running. Plus, return processing has become quicker over the past few years. So, unless there's a major technical issue, the deadline is expected to stay the same. It's a good idea to stay prepared and regularly check the income tax portal for updates. Once the utilities go live, you can quickly complete the filing without any rush.Trending Reel

Kraft Heinz split: Cold cheeses are a burden for its hot sauces

When schools returned to in-person learning in the fall of 2021 after the pandemic, parents scrambled to find Lunchables to put in their children's backpacks. Today, the meal kit of processed meats and cheese may be off the menu amid the desire for healthier food, but its manufacturer, Kraft Heinz, is firmly on it. The company is exploring spinning off the division that makes Lunchables, alongside Kraft cheese and Oscar Mayer hot dogs from its faster-growing arm that makes ketchup. A split could deliver modest value for shareholders. The biggest upside, though, would come from tempting bidders to pay up for each of the individual companies. To recap: Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway and private equity firm 3G Capital acquired J.H. Heinz for $28 billion, including debt, in 2013. Two years later, they merged it with Kraft Foods, the US grocery business that had been spun out of what would become Mondelez International (more on that later). Also Read: Face the M&A truth: Mergers are glitter but grit is gold But Kraft Heinz has grappled with changing consumer tastes and, most recently, the rise of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs. As sales have come under pressure, its shares have lost 70% since 2017. Little wonder then that the company said in May that it was 'evaluating potential strategic transactions" to boost its stock price. The logic for a split is straightforward. Kraft Heinz's sauces, spreads and condiments business, which generates annual sales of about $11 billion, is growing faster than processed meat and cheese. People are seeking more flavour in their food, particularly if their appetites shrink—either because they are getting older or taking obesity treatments. Freed from their more sluggish sibling, brands like Grey Poupon mustard and Lea & Perrins sauce could command a higher valuation multiple. There is a precedent here—ironically from Mondelez. After Kraft was spun off, Mondelez retained the sexier international, confectionary and snacking segments. It has delivered a total return of over 200% since October 2012, almost double the S&P 500 Packaged Foods Index, and trades at a forward enterprise value-to-ebitda multiple of about 15. Kraft Heinz's slower-growing grocery arm, which could have sales of about $14.5 billion, would be valued less generously. It would still be highly cash generative, though, so it could appeal to an investor looking for a steady dividend payer. Analysts at T.D. Cowen estimate that the sauces, spreads and condiments division could be worth $29.5 billion and the grocery arm about $25 billion. Together, that's only just ahead of Kraft Heinz's enterprise value of $51 billion. Also Read: To split up or not? Conglomerates should never go by off-the-shelf answers Given that much of the upside might be swallowed by the higher costs of operating both companies, why bother with a breakup? Because both companies might prove tantalizing to a bidder. This is exactly what happened in the case of Kellogg. The company spun off its North American cereals business as W.K. Kellogg Company in late 2023. The racier snack-foods arm, maker of Cheez-It and Pringles, was renamed Kellanova. Almost a year ago, Mars paid $36 billion, including debt, for Kellanova, a 44% premium to the share price in the preceding 30 days. Last week, privately held Ferrero International, maker of Nutella, agreed to buy W.K. Kellogg, whose brands include Froot Loops and Corn Flakes, for an enterprise value of $3.1 billion. The $23-a-share cash offer equated to a 40% premium to the share price in the preceding 30 days. Kraft Heinz's sauces, spreads and condiments arm would fit in McCormick's portfolio, an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence told me, although there may be competition concerns. And now that Unilever is offloading its ice-cream business, might it be interested in bulking up in dressings? Also Read: The Godrej split holds valuable lessons for family businesses As for the grocery business, it could appeal to a private equity buyer drawn to its cash flow. One complication is that Kraft Heinz is expected to have net debt of just over $18 billion at the end of this year, and much of that is likely to be allocated to the food maker. This might make it harder for a financial buyer to load up on borrowings. Still, if this hurdle could be overcome, there could be scope to add other low-growth but cash-generative food businesses to build scale. If both of Kraft Heinz's component parts are as successful in selling themselves as Kellogg's, this would certainly be a tasty treat for investors. Since news of Kraft Heinz potentially doing the splits broke at the weekend, there has been much discussion of de-consolidation in the consumer sector. But like Lunchables leaving school bags, this looks more like a prelude to a corporate disappearing act. ©Bloomberg The author is a Bloomberg Opinion columnist covering consumer goods and the retail industry.

ITR Filing 2025: Why Checking Annual Information Statement Can Save You A Tax Notice

Income Tax Filing 2025: The Annual Information Statement (AIS) is a vital tool introduced by the Income Tax Department of India to enhance transparency and simplify tax compliance for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26. Unlike Form 26AS, which primarily details Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) and Tax Collected at Source (TCS), AIS offers a broader view of a taxpayer's financial transactions. It includes income from salaries, interest, dividends, stock and mutual fund transactions, foreign remittances, and high-value purchases, making it essential for accurate Income Tax Return (ITR) e-filing. The tax department has released Excel-based utilities for all four ITR forms. The online filing is available for ITR-1, ITR-2 and ITR-4 now. The deadline for ITR filing for FY 2024-25 (AY 2025-26) is September 15, 2025, extended from July 31, 2025.

CDMOs gear up for peptide boom amid rising demand for weight-loss drugs

As global demand for next-generation weight-loss and diabetes therapeutics surges, India's contract development and manufacturing organisations (CDMOs) are strategically positioning themselves to capture a bigger share of the peptide market, particularly in anticipation of key patent expiries such as that of semaglutide—a blockbuster GLP-1 receptor agonist. India is poised to play a critical role in the global manufacturing of GLP-1 drugs, driven by soaring demand for therapies like semaglutide and tirzepatide. The GLP-1 market is projected to exceed $150 billion by 2030. India's peptide CDMO market, currently estimated at around $80 million, is expected to grow at a CAGR of 14 per cent until 2030. Though the country currently accounts for just 3 per cent of the global peptide CDMO space—valued at $190 billion—the growth momentum is unmistakable, according to Nilaya Varma, Co-founder and Group CEO of Primus Partners. Top Indian players in the space include Glenmark, Cipla, Divi's Laboratories, Themis Medicare, Peptomer Therapeutics, Syngene International, and Sai Life Sciences. Semaglutide patent expiry fuels strategic activity Semaglutide, the active ingredient in drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy, is owned and produced by Novo Nordisk and is set to go off-patent in India in March 2026. Leading pharmaceutical companies, including Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Sun Pharma, Cipla, Mankind Pharma, Natco Pharma, Lupin, and Biocon, are preparing to launch drugs in this category. These companies are investing in R&D, manufacturing capacity, and collaborations to compete in this rapidly growing market. Anthem Biosciences is experiencing a surge in inquiries for peptide active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), including those related to weight loss. 'Semaglutide can be produced through total synthesis or biosynthetic routes. Very few companies in India can manage biosynthetic production—and we are one of them,' said Ganesh Sambasivam, Promoter and Chief Scientific Officer at Anthem. While he declined to confirm whether semaglutide is in active production at Anthem, he hinted that it may be among the peptides currently in development. Syngene highlights technical edge in peptide trials Jayashree Aiyar, Chief Scientific Officer at Syngene International, sees opportunities not just in manufacturing, but also in preclinical and clinical development. 'We've already supported preclinical studies on semaglutide and recently helped a global pharma company with a bioequivalence study using pre-filled pens,' Aiyar said. These studies included developing and validating sensitive LC-MS/MS methods to measure semaglutide plasma levels—a significant technical challenge for peptides. Syngene's case study on semaglutide demonstrates the rigorous planning and execution required for clinical bioequivalence trials involving peptides. With gastrointestinal side effects common among test subjects, the company had to implement robust risk management and continuous patient support mechanisms. On the analytical front, it overcame complex challenges like autosampler carryover and low detection limits through custom-developed chromatography and mass spectrometry protocols. 'While we are not currently manufacturing GLP-1 APIs, we are well-equipped with peptide scale-up and fill–finish capabilities. We continue to invest in technologies to meet future market needs,' Aiyar added. Production and compliance challenges persist However, peptide manufacturing comes with its own set of challenges. 'There are production hurdles involving the availability of protected amino acids, coupling reagents, and advanced purification protocols, particularly for bulk APIs,' Varma noted. These challenges, combined with high utility costs and stringent environmental controls, add pressure to meet international compliance standards. Schemes such as the 2024 Production Linked Incentive (PLI) and Greenfield Bulk Drug Park initiatives are expected to ease some of these bottlenecks. While some CDMOs are already entrenched in the space, others are evaluating the landscape. Kashmik Formulations, for instance, is not currently working on semaglutide or related APIs, nor has it received client inquiries. However, the company sees the patent expiry of semaglutide as a potential inflection point. 'We're open to collaborations with larger players who can provide validated processes,' the company said in a statement. Diabetes burden drives urgency for scalable solutions The spike in demand is closely linked to a global epidemic of lifestyle diseases. Arushi Jain, Director at Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals, underscores this urgency. 'Over 100 million Indians are living with diabetes, underlining the need for scalable therapeutic solutions that address root causes such as obesity.' Akums is actively tracking developments in weight-loss APIs. As patents for semaglutide and similar molecules expire, Indian CDMOs are gearing up for a new wave of growth. Equipped with scientific expertise, evolving infrastructure, and an appetite for collaboration, the Indian peptide manufacturing ecosystem is emerging as a vital player in the global fight against obesity and metabolic diseases.
