Daredevil act goes wrong, veteran stuntman Mohanraj dies during Tamil film shoot

S Mohanraj, a veteran stunt coordinator with over three decades of experience in the Tamil film industry, died Sunday morning during the filming of a high-risk car stunt for director Pa Ranjith's upcoming action film Vettuvam. He was 52. The incident occurred around 8 am during the first shot of the day at a salt pan in Vizhunthamavadi village, under Keelaiyur police station limits in Nagapattinam district. According to three crew members who worked on the film, the sequence involved a skidding SUV — an idea initiated by Mohanraj himself. 'It was the first skidding scene in the movie. The soil was loose and tricky, but he was confident,' said one of the crew members. They added that Mohanraj was to be paid an additional Rs 2 lakh for executing this particular scene, and he had taken it up due to financial necessity. Soon after the car stunt began and it went wrong, Mohanraj, who was behind the wheel, suffered sudden health complications. His colleagues rushed him to the Government Medical College Hospital at Orathur, about 10 kilometers away. Doctors declared him dead on arrival. Hailing from Poongandam village in Kanchipuram district, Mohanraj had worked in numerous Tamil films and had a reputation for executing complex car stunts. He was serving as the stunt coordinator for Vettuvam, a science fiction-action film starring Arya, Attakathi Dinesh, Dancing Rose Shabeer, and Sobhita Dhulipala. The shoot for the film, described as a complete action movie with a 'modern Robin Hood' storyline, had been underway for the past three months with about 40 days of filming left, according to sources on set. Multiple tributes poured in from the Indian film fraternity. Actor Vishal, taking to X (formerly Twitter), expressed his condolences, calling Mohanraj a 'brave person.' Prominent stunt choreographer Silva wrote, 'One of our great car-jumping stunt artists, S M Raju, died today while doing car stunts. Our stunt union and the Indian film industry will be missing him.' He posted a screengrab of the tribute on Instagram. Mohanraj was also known in the stunt community by the name S M Raju. His death triggered an outpouring of grief from veteran stuntmen across India. Sugumar, secretary of the Stunt Artists' Association, told The Indian Express that Raju had worked in over 500 movies in his 30-year-long career. 'We do not have words to explain his courage and the body of work,' he said. Veteran stunt director Sham Kaushal, known for films such as Gangs of Wasseypur and Bajirao Mastani, told PTI: 'I haven't worked with him, but stunt people are a close-knit fraternity. When you do a stunt with a car, it's a combination of human skill and machine. If there's even a slight misjudgment, it can be fatal.' Aejaz Gulab, General Secretary of the Movie Stunt Artists Association said 'car and motorcycle stunts are among the most dangerous.' 'Mohanraj was known for his ability to handle these. Sadly, accidents still happen, despite precautions,' he said. A viral video from the Vettuvam set shows the moment of panic as crew members rushed to pull Mohanraj from the SUV. According to eyewitnesses, he collapsed inside the vehicle soon after completing the skidding motion. 'There were no visible injuries but the accident was deadly… Soon, they called for a pack-up and we all returned to Chennai,' said one one the crew members. His death comes months after another stuntman, S Ezhumalai, 54, died during the filming of Sardar 2 starring Karthi. That incident, too, involved unsafe conditions — Ezhumalai was performing without protective gear at Chennai's LV Prasad Studio. Mohanraj is survived by his wife and children. The Keelaiyur police have registered a case, and a post-mortem was conducted on Sunday. His colleagues remember him as a man who led from the front — taking the first leap into danger, even after 30 years in the business. Top Malayalam star, Prithviraj Sukumaran, wrote a note expressing his grief over his demise. He wrote, 'Rest in peace Raju! So many moments of magic that would have been impossible to film without your skill and guts! You will be missed forever!'

Shanaya Kapoor calls BBFs Ananya Panday, Suhana Khan ‘family', reveals there's no competition between them: ‘They are the first ones to…'

Maheep Kapoor and Sanjay Kapur's daughter Shanaya Kapoor recently marked her big-screen debut with Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, opposite Vikrant Massey. While the film received negative reviews, the actor's performance is being praised by fans and critics. She signed her first film after her childhood best friends Ananya Panday and Suhana Khan made their silver screen debut with Student of the Year 2 and The Archies, respectively. In a recent interview, Shanaya opened up about her friendship with Ananya and Suhana, and explained why there is no competition between them. During a candid conversation with India Today, she said, 'Honestly, I have always said this, they are more than friends, they are family. So, competition and all are not even in our heads. We really support each other and are also always pushing each other. We have grown up together, so we have been talking and dreaming of this moment since we were kids. Now it's finally happening for all of us in different phases and different stages of our paths.' The actor added, 'It's a very exciting feeling. They are the first ones to always message me, call me, and show their support, and it's the same when it comes to their work with me. I am always there for them, and we're always pushing each other to be the best versions of ourselves.' We have grown up together hoping for these moments and it's finally happening. Ananya has always been there for me for all my first steps. She has told me, 'This is is how this works, this is how this doesn't work'. And she has always guided me. So it's sisterhood. We are so excited that we are all in this journey of fulfilling our dreams right now. What a beautiful feeling that we come back and we talk about it together. We are helping each other out. We are experiencing the ups and the downs together and I am very grateful that I have them and I can rely on them and call them whenever I need them for anything. I feel it's very tough to find that sisterhood.' Helmed by Santosh Singh, Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan has collected only over Rs 1 crore in three days of its run at the theatres.

Zee Entertainment partners Ideabaaz Tech to launch startup show

Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEEL) on Monday entered into a strategic partnership with Ideabaaz Tech, an integrated start-up platform, to launch a new intellectual property (IP) called Ideabaaz for an undisclosed amount, as per their joint release. Ideabaaz, founded by Jeet Wagh and family, is an integrated start-up reality show and platform designed to discover, mentor and fund entrepreneurs from tier II and III cities, the companies said in a statement. The show is expected to reach over 1.3 billion viewers worldwide across languages through its premiere on ZEEL's flagship Hindi-language channel Zee TV and its streaming platform ZEE5. Additionally, this partnership comes at a time when India is stepping up its commitment towards fostering research and innovation across sectors, the release stated. Jeet Wagh, founder of Ideabaaz, was quoted as saying: 'Our mission is to create an ecosystem where ideas are nurtured, talent is celebrated and opportunities are accessible to all. Tapping into the nation's vision towards technology and innovation, coupled with the network reach and strength of 'Z' (ZEEL), we believe this is the right moment to build a new wave of start-ups that can shape India's future.' 'For over three decades, 'Z' (ZEEL) has redefined the content ecosystem through unique offerings that entertain and engage with its consumers. The strategic partnership with Ideabaaz Tech is a perfect extension of our vision to create purposeful entertainment for our consumers with content that blends creativity with technology-led innovation,' said a spokesperson from ZEEL in a statement. These developments come at a time when ZEEL failed to secure the required majority to increase its promoter shareholding. As of March 2025, the Mumbai-based broadcaster had cash and cash equivalents of Rs 2,406 crore, according to its investor presentation. The investor presentation, released in May, also noted that ZEEL was exploring value-accretive merger and acquisition (M&A) opportunities in pursuit of scalable growth. In June, the company announced a strategic equity partnership with content and technology start-up Bullet for micro dramas, where ZEEL is expected to either invest in or acquire a stake in the platform.
