Canadian Open 2025: Iga Swiatek Stunned But Naomi Osaka Advance

News18a day ago
Iga Swiatek suffered an upset defeat as Clara Tauson advanced to the next round where she will face Madison Keys next.
Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek became the latest seed to fall at the WTA Canadian Open on Sunday, stunned 7-6 (7/1), 6-3 by 19th-ranked Dane Clara Tauson in the fourth round.
Swiatek, ranked third in the world and seeded second in Montreal, followed top-seeded Coco Gauff, third-seeded two-time defending champion Jessica Pegula, and fourth-seeded Mirra Andreeva out the door.
Fifth-seeded American Amanda Anisimova was also defeated later, losing in straight sets to Elina Svitolina.
Tauson avenged a fourth-round loss to Swiatek at Wimbledon and described her second career victory over a top-five player as 'unreal".
'Obviously it's really great and it shows all the hard work I've been doing has been the right thing," Tauson said. 'I'm getting more confidence at this level and feeling like I belong here a bit more. I think that really helped me today in the important points."
Tauson secured a quarter-final spot against Australian Open champion Madison Keys, who saved two match points in a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Czech Karolina Muchova.
This was the American's third match win of the year in which she overcame a match point.
Osaka's second-quickest win of her career advanced her to her first quarter-final at the 1000 or Grand Slam level since Doha in 2024.
Swiatek, playing her first tournament since winning her sixth Grand Slam title at the All England Club last month, appeared out of sorts from the start on a breezy centre court.
She fell behind a quick break and failed to convert a pair of break chances in the eighth game, allowing Tauson to take a 5-3 lead in the first set.
The Polish star seemed to be finding her rhythm as she won the next three games to lead 6-5.
However, Tauson, who won her third WTA title and her first since 2021 in New Zealand in January, held to force a tiebreaker, dominating as Swiatek surrendered the set with a double fault on the Dane's first set point.
Swiatek saved a pair of break points in the eighth game of the second set, but another untimely double fault gave Tauson the break and a 5-3 lead.
Tauson calmly served it out, clinching the victory when Swiatek hit a backhand into the net.
Tauson will face a battle-tested opponent in Keys, who saved two match points on her serve in the 10th game of the third set, hitting a forehand on the first and escaping the second as Czech Muchova misfired on a service return.
'I'm really happy to get that win," Keys told the crowd. 'After losing the first set and even being match point down, being able to figure it out — it's always a great day."
Osaka, who has struggled for consistency since returning from maternity leave in 2024, said the coaching shakeup she initiated this week — parting with Patrick Mouratoglou after less than a year and teaming up on a trial basis with former Swiatek coach Tomasz Wiktorowski — had energized her.
'I enjoy his coaching style. He's very direct and to the point. For someone like me, whose thoughts scatter around often, it's very helpful," said Osaka, who lost in the first round of the French Open and the third round at Wimbledon and arrived in Montreal ranked 49th in the world.
She will face Ukrainian veteran Svitolina, who beat Wimbledon runner-up Anisimova 6-4, 6-1.

'One Of You Is Going To Lose...': McLaren Boss Gearing Up For Disappointment At End Of F1 Season

With Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris just nine points apart, McLaren boss Zak Brown will have to handle the situation sensitively. McLaren boss Zak Brown is preparing to face disappointment at the end of the Formula One season, despite the team enjoying one of their most dominant years and celebrating their 200th grand prix win over the weekend. As the title battle between Oscar Piastri and teammate Lando Norris intensifies, with the McLaren pair separated by just nine points after Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix, the American admitted he was also thinking about how to handle the aftermath. Red Bull's reigning champion Max Verstappen, the McLaren drivers' closest rival, is now 97 points behind and told reporters over the weekend that he might not win again this year due to his car's issues. Even before the weekend, both Piastri and Norris declared it a two-horse race. One of them will undoubtedly end the year celebrating a dream come true. The other will lament what could have been, with a new engine era next season potentially shaking things up again and opportunities possibly vanishing. Losing always stings, especially when it's to a teammate with the same car, and Brown said McLaren would have to handle the situation delicately when – although he still insisted on saying if – the time came. 'Eventually… we'll just sit down and actually have a conversation and go 'right, one of you is going to win and it's going to be the best day of your life. One of you is going to lose. How do you want us to handle that?'," he told a select group of reporters. 'We'll actually sit down and go 'Right, you want us to jump up and down and celebrate? This guy won.' So we're fully aware and sensitive to 'how do you celebrate that situation?'" Australian Piastri has won six races to Norris's five, but the Briton has momentum going into the August break, with three wins from his last four starts. The pair have had seven one-two finishes from 14 races, including the last four, and have left rivals trailing. McLaren are so far ahead in the constructors' standings – 299 points over Ferrari – that the crown is a given. Much has been made of the potential for a falling out between friends, for clashes on track given what is at stake, but Brown was calm and said the relationship was only growing stronger. When Norris ran into the back of Piastri as he challenged for the lead in Canada in June, the Briton defused the situation by immediately taking responsibility. Piastri locked up behind Norris in Hungary on Sunday, in what could have been a repeat of that Montreal accident, but no contact was made. Brown said there was no 'elephant in the room' at McLaren, with the drivers having complete transparency on strategy and how the team go about racing, and he expected more close calls in the future. 'There's competitiveness brewing… as the championship builds, I'm sure that tension will grow," said the boss. 'We're fully anticipating them 'swapping paint' again at some point, I'm very confident it won't be deliberate, which is where you then get into the problems. 'They will have racing incidents during their time at McLaren, we know that and they know that, so we're not afraid of that. 'I'm positive they're never going to run each other off the track, and that's where you get into bad blood. So they're free to race… there are rules around our racing, which is respect your teammate, they know that." Novak Djokovic Withdraws From Cincinnati Ahead of US Open

For the second year in a row, Novak Djokovic won't take part in the Cincinnati Open. Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open for the second consecutive year, tournament organisers confirmed to U.S. media on Monday. The 24-time Grand Slam champion decided to skip the U.S. Open warm-up tournament after back-to-back semi-final losses at the French Open and Wimbledon, where he was defeated each time by world number one Jannik Sinner. Djokovic also withdrew from Cincinnati last year as the defending champion shortly after his victory in the singles event at the Paris Olympics. The U.S. Open will be held from August 24 to September 7 in New York City. view comments First Published: August 05, 2025, 11:11 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Novak Djokovic withdraws from Cincinnati Open, heads to US Open without preparation

Novak Djokovic pulled out of the Cincinnati Open on Monday for what officially was listed as a 'non-medical' reason, meaning he will head to the U.S. Open without having played a match in about 1 1/2 months. The 24-time Grand Slam champion hasn't competed since losing in the Wimbledon semifinals to eventual champion Jannik Sinner on July 11. That straight-set defeat against Sinner at the All England Club came two days after the 38-year-old Djokovic took what he described as a 'nasty' and 'awkward' fall in the last game of his quarterfinal victory. Djokovic clearly was compromised against Sinner and unable to move at his best; he received treatment on his upper left leg from a trainer. He cited a groin injury for that absence. His previous event before Wimbledon was the French Open, where he also lost to Sinner in the semifinals. Djokovic will have no hard-court tournament preparation before the U.S. Open singles competition begins on Aug. 24. He has won four championships at Flushing Meadows, most recently in 2023. That was also his most recent Grand Slam trophy.
