Chevron beats Wall Street profit estimates with record output
The logo for Chevron appears above a trading post on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. (AP Photo/Richard Drew) HOUSTON — Chevron beat analyst estimates for second-quarter profit on Friday as record oil and gas production and lower capital expenditure helped to offset the impact of lower crude prices. The No. 2 U.S. oil major last month headed off a legal challenge from the biggest U.S. producer Exxon Mobil enabling it to close its US$55 billion acquisition of Hess. The deal includes a stake in the Stabroek Block oilfield, offshore Guyana, that Exxon operates, and should provide Chevron with a source of long-term growth to help to fund dividends into the 2030s and make Chevron's earnings more resilient to oil price volatility. International crude prices LCOc1 declined by 11 per cent during the quarter as OPEC+, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allied producers, increased output. Exxon Mobil also beat Wall Street estimates for second-quarter profit on Friday. 'We had strong execution, record production and exceptional cash generation,' said Chevron Chief Financial Officer Eimear Bonner in an interview. 'The financial performance was really underpinned by the stellar operational performance from across the company.' Adjusted earnings for the quarter ended June 30 were $3.1 billion, or $1.77 per share, beating consensus analyst estimates of $1.70 per share, according to data compiled by LSEG. Global production totaled 3.4 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, up from 3.3 million boed in the same period last year. Production from the Permian Basin, the biggest U.S. oilfield, reached 1 million boed during the quarter. Third-quarter production is expected to be lower by 60,000 boed due to maintenance. 'Following the clouds of uncertainty being lifted around the Hess deal, Chevron has hit the ground running with a strong set of results and beat versus market expectations,' said Biraj Borkhataria, an analyst with RBC Capital Markets, in a research note. Capital expenditure declined 7.5 per cent from the same period last year, as the company spent less on its downstream operations. Chevron raised its free cash flow guidance for 2026 to $12.5 billion. The company paid $2.9 billion in dividends and repurchased $2.6 billion worth of shares during the quarter. Although Chevron has said the Hess acquisition will allow it to increase dividends and repurchases over the long term, at least for this year, CFO Bonner said it did not expect to change its guidance of between $10 billion and $20 billion in full-year share repurchases. 'We're still in the range and we've got a strong program, and we wouldn't see a change unless we saw a sustained and significant shift in where the commodity prices are today,' she said. Earnings from oil and gas production, which make up the bulk of Chevron's profit, were $2.7 billion, down from $4.5 billion in the year-ago quarter. Kleenex tissue maker Kimberly-Clark's sales jump on strong volumes
Boxes of Kleenex tissues are displayed in a pharmacy, Monday, April 19, 2021 in New York. (AP Photo/Mark Lennihan) Kimberly-Clark's second-quarter organic sales rose as the Kleenex tissue maker recorded its best volume growth in five years amid lower prices, sending its shares up about six per cent on Friday. The Dallas-based firm has broadened its portfolio to offer products from budget to premium price tiers, in an effort to capture demand across income levels and fend off rivals such as Procter & Gamble. 'In this challenging consumer environment, we believe it's important to meet consumers where they need us,' said CEO Mike Hsu in a statement. 'We've adjusted some entry price points, and more importantly, we're cascading features from our premium offerings into our value offerings.' The Huggies diaper maker also raised its annual profit forecast. Organic sales for the quarter ended June 30 were up 3.9 per cent, driven by a five per cent growth in overall volumes. 'Strong volume demonstrates the effectiveness of KMB's innovation ... with value positioning attracting demand across product tiers,' said CFRA analyst Ana Garcia. Prices were 1.2 per cent lower than last year. Kimberly-Clark on Friday estimated full-year incremental tariff-related costs at about US$170 million. It had warned of US$300 million in additional costs earlier in April, primarily due to U.S. President Donald Trump's levies on China. Those duties have since come down. It now expects adjusted earnings per share attributable for 2025 to grow at a low to mid-single-digit rate, compared with an earlier forecast for flat-to-positive growth on a constant-currency basis. The profit forecast still includes the International Family Care and Professional business until the close of the joint venture deal with Brazilian pulp maker Suzano in mid-year 2026, the company said. In June, Kimberly struck a US$3.4 billion deal to sell a majority stake in its international tissue business to Suzano, as part of efforts to streamline its business to control costs and drive growth in more profitable brands. --- Reporting by Savyata Mishra and Neil J Kanatt in Bengaluru; Editing by Devika Syamnath and Sriraj Kalluvila

Zacks.com featured highlights include QuantumScape, Civeo and Agenus
For Immediate Release Chicago, IL – August 1, 2025 – Stocks in this week's article are QuantumScape Corp. QS, Civeo Corp. CVEO and Agenus Inc. AGEN. QuantumScape & 2 Other Stocks to Buy for Earnings Acceleration Top executives and analysts focus on consistent earnings growth, which reflects a company's profitability. However, earnings acceleration has an even greater impact on driving up stock prices. Studies show that successful stocks experience a speed-up in earnings before their stock prices increase. To that end, QuantumScape Corp., Civeo Corp. and Agenus Inc. are exhibiting strong earnings acceleration this month. What Is Earnings Acceleration? Earnings acceleration is the incremental growth in a company's earnings per share (EPS). In other words, if a company's quarter-over-quarter earnings growth rate increases within a stipulated time frame, it can be called earnings acceleration. In the case of earnings growth, you pay for something that is already reflected in the stock price. However, earnings acceleration helps spot stocks that haven't yet caught the attention of investors and, once secured, will invariably lead to a rally in the share price. This is because earnings acceleration considers both the direction and magnitude of growth rates. An increasing percentage of earnings growth means that the company is fundamentally sound and has been on the right track for a considerable period. Meanwhile, a sideways percentage of earnings growth indicates a period of consolidation or slowdown, while a decelerating percentage of earnings growth may drag prices down. The above criteria narrowed the universe of around 7,735 stocks to only four. Here are the top three stocks: QuantumScape QuantumScape develops solid-state lithium-metal batteries for electric vehicles in the United States. QuantumScape has a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
