Contribution made to the foundation commemorating the island's painful history of civilian massacre in 1940s and 50s
A local YouTuber said recently he was donating the entire profits he made with review videos about a hit drama "When Life Gives You Tangerines" to the Jeju 4.3 Peace Foundation, a government-funded body that commemorates the civilian massacre that took place on the island from 1947 to 1954.
Kim Hong-gyu, the Jeju-born YouTuber and comedian, said he has made about 3.43 million won ($2,334) with the review videos.
"I've thought a lot about how I should use this money. ... Many people don't really know about April 3, so I decided to donate the profits of (review videos of) 'When Life Gives You Tangerines,' which carries the spirit of Jeju, to the Jeju 4.3 Peaceh Foundation."
Kim revealed the transaction record of him sending 5 million won, the rest coming out of his own pocket, to the foundation. He expressed his wishes that more people would take interest in the incident, and care more about the Jeju Island.
Kim was born and raised on the island and currently resides in Jeju City. Most of his videos are comedy sketches and reviews of local eateries, and Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Government in 2023 recognized his contributions by naming him a PR ambassador for the southern island.
The popular Netflix series "When Life Gives You Tangerines" does not directly depict the April 3 Incident, but focuses on the lives of those living in 1960s Jeju.
The April 3 Incident or Jeju Massacre refers to the island-wide crackdown by the newly liberated Korea's authorities against what they said were communist collaborators.
In what is considered one of the worst abuses of state power in the country's history, at least 14,822 civilians are confirmed to have been killed or gone missing in the incident as of 2024, nearly 1,000 of whom were aged 10 or younger.

Actor Park Bo-gum named honorary ambassador for 2025 Korea Tourism

Actor Park Bo-gum has been appointed as the honorary ambassador for 2025 Korea Tourism, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced Thursday. A teaser video for the upcoming global promotional campaign was unveiled on the ministry's official YouTube channel 'Imagine Your Korea,' revealing Park as the new face of Korean tourism. The ministry and the Korea Tourism Organization have consistently tapped top-tier Hallyu stars to front their annual campaigns — BTS in 2022, Lee Jung-jae in 2023 and NewJeans in 2024. Park, widely loved for his nuanced acting in the Netflix hit 'When Life Gives You Tangerines,' will now lead efforts to promote Korea abroad over the next year. As global travelers increasingly seek personalized, emotionally resonant journeys rather than conventional sightseeing, this year's campaign encourages visitors to take charge in their own Korean travel stories. In the teaser clip, Park extends an invitation, asking, 'Will you be the main character of this story?' The message kicks off the 'Never Ending Korea' campaign, aimed at showcasing the country's charms and immersive travel experiences.

G-Dragon named honorary ambassador for APEC as Seoul has 100 days to prepare

The preparation committee for the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit announced Wednesday morning that it has appointed G-Dragon as the event's honorary ambassador. The singer was appointed as he embodies the APEC's values of "connectivity and sustainability" as a symbol of creativity and innovation, and was the perfect figure to share these values "both here and abroad," the Foreign Ministry, which is part of the committee said in a statement. As the APEC ambassador, he will appear in promotional videos to spread the key message of the summit to the global audience, the ministry explained. Shin Woo-seok, creative director and head of the production company Dolphiners Films, will produce the APEC promotional materials. Prime Minister Kim Min-seok on Wednesday expressed anticipation for the 2025 APEC Leaders' Meeting as an opportunity to showcase South Korea's recovery from political turmoil stemming from former President Yoon Suk Yeol, to the world. 'The upcoming APEC summit (in Gyeongju) is different from other regular global events,' Kim said during a meeting of the summit preparation committee held at the Seoul government complex. 'It will be (an opportunity) to showcase the democratic power of South Korea, which has overcome the insurrection (triggered by the martial law debacle) with the power of our people, as well as our cultural dignity to the world.' The prime minister is the head of the summit preparation committee comprising related government agencies, including the Foreign Ministry, municipal governments and business organizations. Kim called for thorough preparedness during the meeting, which took place some 100 days ahead of the summit, set to kick off on Oct. 31 in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province. 'The real task is to share the history and cultural dignity of both South Korea and Gyeongju with the world, aligned with a goal of getting a hundred times return on our investment,' Kim said. 'It could be too late to fix things after September, when the preparations are roughly done. It is why we must thoroughly check and review the preparation process and why I have decided to visit the summit site in Gyeongju every week.' Second Vice Foreign Minister Kim Jin-a, who attended the meeting, said that they plan to 'greet the leaders' of the 21 APEC economies with readiness and vowed full efforts to host a successful event. She explained that all constructions and preparations for infrastructure would be completed by the end of September and the final inspections and rehearsals would be carried out in October. Earlier this week, the presidential office said it had sent invitation letters to the leaders of the 20 APEC member economies, including China, Japan, Russia and the US. Though the White House has yet to confirm whether US President Donald Trump will join the upcoming APEC summit, new Foreign Minister Cho Hyun said in a recent parliamentary hearing that the likelihood of Trump attending is "considerably high.' Cho, however, did not go into details behind his claim.

‘When Life Gives You Tangerines' sweeps Blue Dragon Series Awards

IU takes home her first Best Actress honor Netflix's hit drama "When Life Gives You Tangerines" dominated this year's Blue Dragon Series Awards, taking home four trophies, including the top honor, the Grand Prize. Now in its fourth year, the annual ceremony is a spinoff of the prestigious Blue Dragon Film Awards, created to recognize excellence in Korean streaming series. This year's event was held Friday evening at Paradise City in Incheon. "Tangerines" emerged as the biggest winner of the night, securing awards for Grand Prize, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Popular Star Award. Stealing the spotlight was IU, who claimed her first Best Actress award for her dual performance in the 16-episode series. She portrayed both the young version of the mother, Aesoon, and her daughter, Geum-myung, delivering a powerful portrayal that resonated with global audiences and brought depth to the emotional arcs of both characters. 'This show will remain the greatest pride of my life,' IU said onstage as she accepted the award. 'I offer my deepest respect and gratitude to all the Aesoons who lived boldly and clearly in a world that demanded they remain unseen, and to all the Geum-myungs who firmly planted their desires and nurtured them into reality.' Veteran actress Yeom Hye-ran won Best Supporting Actress for her role as Gwang-rye, Aesoon's mother. 'I've never received so many cheers and compliments in my life. I may not deserve them, but I'm deeply honored,' she said, thanking the series' production team for their support. IU, whose real name is Lee Ji-eun, also received the Popular Star Award alongside Park Bo-gum, who portrayed the younger version of her husband Gwan-sik. Actors Lee Hye-ri and Lee Jun-hyuk were also honored with the award. "The Trauma Code: Heroes on call," another Netflix title, also bagged several awards, including the Top Excellence Award, the second biggest honor of the awarding ceremony. The show's actors Ju Ji-hoon and Choo Young-woo each nabbed the Best Male Actor and Best New Male Actor awards. Best Supporting Actor went to Lee Kwang-soo for his role in the Netflix crime thriller "Karma," while Best New Actress was awarded to Kim Min-ha—better known globally for "Pachinko"—for her performance in Tving's romance drama "Way Back Love."
