Here's what the NHL Draft Lottery results mean for the Calgary Flames
The results of the NHL Draft Lottery solidified which two first-round picks the Calgary Flames own in 2025 and completed the conditions of a nearly three-year-old trade.
The New York Islanders won the league's draft lottery on Monday night, jumping up to the top spot with just the 10th best odds to win at 3.5 per cent.
The Flames went into the lottery with the lowest odds, a 0.5 per cent chance of moving up 10 spots in the draft order, but were not lucky enough to win the draw.
Pending the results of the draft lottery, Calgary would have access to two of three first-round draft picks: their own and New Jersey's and Florida's, which were acquired through trade.
But without a lottery win, the Flames' pick stood pat at 16th overall, which triggered the conditions of a trade with the Montreal Canadiens.
In the summer of 2022, the Flames sent forward Sean Monahan and a conditional first-round pick to Montreal in exchange for future considerations in an effort to clear cap space.
Per the terms of the trade, Montreal would acquire Calgary's 2025 first-round pick, as long as it was outside the top 10.
If Calgary's pick ended up in the top 10 through the lottery, the Flames would instead send Montreal Florida's 2025 first-round pick.
With the draft order now set, the Canadiens get the Flames' pick.

The Flames now hold two first-round picks this year as a result of trades with the New Jersey Devils and Florida Panthers.
The NHL Draft will take place on Friday, June 27.
