Hajj operations set ‘global benchmark' in crowd management: Sri Lanka envoy
COLOMBO: Saudi Arabia's organization of this year's Hajj has set a new standard in crowd management through the use of advanced technologies, Sri Lanka's envoy said on Sunday, as hundreds of thousands of pilgrims started to return home.
In the 2025 Hajj season, almost 1.7 million people undertook the spiritual journey that is one of the tenets of Islam. More than 1.5 million arrived in the Kingdom from abroad, according to data from the General Authority for Statistics.
Pilgrims started to arrive in May, ahead of the main rituals which this year fell on June 6-10. Many have already departed for their countries of origin but special post-Hajj flights will continue to operate until mid-July.
The way the temporary influx of people has been handled by the Kingdom has 'set a global benchmark in crowd management and smart innovation,' said Ameer Ajwad, Sri Lanka's ambassador to the Kingdom, who this year was part of his country's Hajj contingent.
Technology has played a key role in monitoring footage from more than 15,000 cameras installed in and around the holy city of Makkah.
The monitoring systems were designed to detect unusual crowd movements and anticipate bottlenecks in foot traffic to help prevent stampedes.
'The Kingdom set an exemplary global benchmark for crowd management by using AI-based crowd monitoring, predictive analytics as well as preventing unauthorized entries,' Ajwad told Arab News.
'Innovations by using advanced technologies such smart tents, digital tools and AI systems were also introduced to facilitate this year's Hajj arrangements.'
More than 420,000 workers from the public and private sectors, including security services, served pilgrims during this year's Hajj, GASTAT data shows.
The envoy highlighted the 'tireless services rendered by the Saudi security and military officers, as well as guides and volunteers,' and extended gratitude to the Ministry of Health for 'providing world-class healthcare services to the Hajj pilgrims (from) around the globe, including heart surgery for a Sri Lankan pilgrim.'
About 3,500 Sri Lankans took part in the pilgrimage this year. Muslims constitute about 10 percent of the 22 million population of the island nation, which is predominantly Buddhist.

Saudi Arabia's King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah welcomed on Saturday the inaugural flight of China's Hainan Airlines, marking the launch of the first direct route between Jeddah and the Chinese city of Haikou. The new service will operate three times per week, positioning the airport as the first in the Kingdom to offer direct connectivity to Haikou. Hainan Airlines, ranked among the world's top ten airlines by Skytrax, brings a new level of service to the airport. Its entry is expected to boost the quality of air travel services and contribute to providing a superior travel experience. Chief Executive Officer and Board Member of the Saudi Tourism Authority Fahd Hamidaddin commented: 'We are proud of our strategic partnership with Hainan Airlines and look forward to expanding this collaboration through targeted initiatives and promotional campaigns led by the Saudi Tourism Authority.' The number of Chinese visitors to the Kingdom grew by 52 percent compared to last year, and that air connectivity between the two countries now includes six airlines operating 29 weekly flights. The Kingdom aims to attract five million Chinese tourists annually by 2030, he added. Johar stated: 'This significant milestone aligns with our strategy to increase the number of international destinations served by King Abdulaziz International Airport to 150 by 2030, in line with the National Aviation Strategy and Vision 2030.' Integrating Hainan Airlines into the airport's network strengthens Saudi–China air connectivity and supports infrastructure and service expansion efforts to meet growing global travel demand, he remarked. CEO of the Saudi Air Connectivity Program Majid Khan described the occasion as an important step toward boosting the Kingdom's global connectivity. 'Welcoming Hainan Airlines in Jeddah reflects growing demand for travel between Saudi Arabia and China and helps foster tourism, cultural exchange, and economic ties,' he said. He underlined the role of Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khateeb, who also oversees the Air Connectivity Program, in positioning Saudi Arabia as an approved and attractive destination for Chinese tourists. The Chinese market is targeted to become the Kingdom's third-largest source of inbound tourism by 2030. The development is part of the ongoing efforts by the General Authority of Civil Aviation to strengthen international air connectivity and expand the Kingdom's air transport network. It also supports Vision 2030's broader objective to establish Saudi Arabia as a leading global logistics platform and open new horizons for travel and trade.

Islamabad says 21,700 Hajj pilgrims have left for Pakistan from Madinah so far
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's post-Hajj flight operations are in full swing as 21,700 pilgrims have so far departed for Pakistan from Madinah, state-run media reported this week, with more expected to leave in the coming days. Pakistan began its post-Hajj flight operations on June 11 with the arrival of a Pakistan International Airlines flight, PK-732, in Islamabad carrying 307 pilgrims. The flights are expected to conclude by July 10. State broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported on Saturday that Pakistani pilgrims are arriving in Madinah following the completion of their Hajj rituals in Makkah. It said the post-Hajj phase has begun under the supervision of the newly established Main Control Office (MCO) to facilitate Pakistani pilgrims for their return to the country. 'So far, 21,700 Pakistani pilgrims have departed for Pakistan from Madinah, with the remaining expected to leave in the coming days,' the state broadcaster said. It said the MCO, set up in coordination with the Pakistan Hajj Mission Madinah, has been equipped with dedicated sections such as Lost and Found, Complaint Cell, Airport Team and other support services. It said all sections are fully operational to ensure seamless facilitation for pilgrims traveling from Makkah to Madinah before their return to Pakistan. 'The office is managing pilgrims' accommodation, food, transportation, and other logistical needs during their stay in Madinah,' Radio Pakistan said. Pakistan received a quota of 179,210 pilgrims from Saudi Arabia for Hajj 2025, which was evenly divided between the government and private Hajj operators. While the government filled its full allocation of over 88,000 pilgrims, a major portion of the private quota remained unutilized due to delays by companies in meeting payment and registration deadlines.

In the heart of historic northern Alkhobar, newly established Kold Kombucha is putting the spotlight on kombucha, a naturally fizzy fermented tea with roots in East Asia dating back over 2,000 years. The compact, design-forward shop — opened this month by popular Saudi Snapchat personality Hammam Al-Mulhem — is the first of its kind in Saudi Arabia spotlighting kombucha, which is brewed on-site in large fermentation vessels over 11 days using a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast known as SCOBY. Marked by a bold painted mural at the entrance, the hole-in-the-wall space receives a steady stream of curious visitors, notably young men who are fans of the Snapchat star. Three core flavors rotate on tap. The beetroot is deep and earthy — slightly sour, complex — almost like a liquid snack. The apple cinnamon is my personal favorite: smooth and warming — pure autumn in a glass, while strawberry mint, bright and refreshing, hits just right on a blazing Eastern Province afternoon. Each bottle goes for between SR23 ($6) to SR25. They also offer a chocolate chip dessert, and for those not quite ready to dive into the world of kombucha, there are coffees available too. I stopped by straight from the airport — jet-lagged, dehydrated and craving something light but nourishing. Kold delivered. Seating — like nearby parking spaces — is limited.
