Brit pilot jailed for baby's brutal murder could walk free as wife 'confesses'
A British airline captain locked up in a hellhole prison in Kazakhstan for the brutal death of his one-year-old daughter could walk free after an alleged confession from his glam ex-wife.
London-born Airbus 330 pilot Mohamed Barakat, 46, was thrown into prison to serve a 20 year sentence in a high security prison after his British daughter Sophia Barakat died. The one-year-old's brains were "crushed" in a drink and drug fuelled frenzy at a five star hotel on 24 October 2019, according to the court case in Kazakhstan, which convicted her father. Kazakh police have now opened an investigation into whether the Brit was wrongly jailed for the tragic death.
The country's Prosecutor's Office has triggered an investigation "on newly discovered circumstances", primarily an alleged confession by the pilot's ex-wife Madina Abdullayeva, 28, that she - and not her husband - killed the baby. At the time, staff at the hotel said Madina blamed her husband for Sophia's death, shouting: "He killed my child, he hit her."
His indictment at the time claimed Sophia's head was banged against the walls and doors of his five-star hotel suite. He was also accused of beating his wife before allegedly turning on his daughter.
Despite this, his then-wife said she would support the pilot during his 2020 trial and said the one-year-old's death was an "accident". Madina was caught on CCTV on the night Sophia died pleading with the staff at the InterContinental Hotel, in Almaty, before she laid the girl's body on the reception counter.
Unable to cope, the heartbroken mother sank to the floor, but was helped up by hotel security who had just called an ambulance. The distraught mother then tried to carry Sophia through to a sofa in the hotel lobby but collapsed on the floor again.
In a shocking twist, the London-born pilot's legal team and family claim there is mounting evidence of a major miscarriage of justice. His former wife "has been questioned regarding the [new] circumstances of the case, and voice samples have also been obtained from her", revealed Police Lt-Col R Kurbanov.
A "forensic video-phonoscopy examination" has been ordered and "other investigative actions are also planned", the prosecutor's office said. The pilot - who has been in detention and jail for five and a half years - turned detective from inside his prison, talking to his then estranged wife (the couple divorced in May 2025) on social media from his cell.
Madina was accused of posting "I kill her....," in evidence now being examined by police and the pilot replied to her and said "I know you did." He has always maintained his innocence and previously claimed that his wife accidentally killed their child.
The ex-wife allegedly also said in the social media chat, with the jailed pilot, that she wanted another baby with Barakat - who she had met in an Almaty nightclub. In a video made by privately-educated Barakat, from his jail cell, he spoke about her "confession" and said: "Two days ago, we had another argument. I told her I would never have another baby with her until she told me what happened to my daughter, Sophia Barakat. And here you can see, she wrote 'Call me please'.
"And then, she writes 'I kill her'. And then''Say thanks that I didn't tell you.'" In later conversations, Madina allegedly asked him to "forgive me" several times.
Separately, the wife on a recorded call allegedly said to Barakat that she broke Sophia's neck at the hotel in Almaty. The ex-wife supposedly said: "I left…and then when I come back, she is awake and crying because she's hungry. I start to feed her. And then she start to poo… and I try to wash her bum. And when I wash her, I break her neck…"
The pilot received a maximum sentence under the criminal code because of the "aggravating circumstance" of committing the murder "in a state of alcoholic and drug intoxication', said the statement. His lawyer Din-Mukhamed Narymbetov said there were now "grounds for hope" his client will be exonerated based on new evidence and claimed there were also astonishing legal failings in the investigation and trial.
One of these claims was that the only evidence of drug use was a toxicology test showing traces of THC in vomit from the hotel mattress, yet the centre has dismissed use of such evidence as unreliable. The lawyer said: "CCTV shows him walking steadily into the hotel, handing balloons to his daughter, and carrying her. Hotel staff said he did not appear drunk."
Another alleged violation was that Sophia was British and under the rules three experts should have carried out the baby's autopsy, yet only one did.
Barakat said: "Madina knows I am innocent. My family knows I'm innocent. The lawyers who stood with me - they know I'm innocent." When asked to comment on this report, Madina said: "I am not going to answer these questions."

A person has died following an arson attack on a car in Co Tyrone. Police said a body was discovered after the blaze was extinguished in the Rylagh Road area of Omagh on Saturday. People in the area are understandably anxious and looking for answers. 'It is critical that anyone with information – no matter how small – reports it to the PSNI. The victim's family deserves truth and justice. I will be following developments closely and supporting efforts to ensure a full investigation.' Mr McCrossan also commended the swift response of emergency services and reiterated the need for calm and co-operation as the investigation continues.

Police said officers were called to a bus stop in Kaiwaka, a small town in the north of the country, on Sunday after a passenger asked for access to the luggage compartment. "The driver became concerned when he noticed the bag moving. When the driver opened the suitcase, they discovered the two-year-old girl," New Zealand Police said a statement. The woman, 27, has been arrested and charged with ill-treatment/neglect of a child. "The little girl was reported to be very hot, but otherwise appeared physically unharmed," police said. She has been taken to hospital, where she is undergoing medical assessment, they added. The relationship between the woman and the child has not been disclosed. The woman is due to appear in the North Shore District Court on Monday. "We would like to acknowledge and commend the bus driver, who noticed something wasn't right and took immediate action, preventing what could have been a far worse outcome," police said.

A YOUNG woman who was on FaceTime with her best pal when she was killed in a car crash says she'll be haunted by the memory forever. Ebony Neville heard tragic work colleague Stephanie Nye-Diroyan suddenly scream as the video call cut out. 9 9 9 The 21-year-old then began frantically trying to call her friend back before getting into her own car and driving along the same route, eventually coming across the crash site. Stephanie, 21, was a passenger in a BMW being driven by another work colleague, Ivan Zaliac, 24, when they ploughed into a lorry at nearly 100mph on Mollison Avenue, in Enfield North London. Ebony told The Sun: "Seconds before the phone cut out you could hear the engine revving and Stephanie's scream - then it froze on her face." She added: 'I tried to ring her back - I don't know what I was thinking had happened. 'I then got in my car and I didn't know where to go, I knew that they were in Brimsdown, in that local area, but I had no idea where.' Zaliac - who walked free from court last month after being deemed unfit to stand trial - had been giving Stephanie a lift on October 23 2022 after they finished work at nearby second hand car dealership Big Motoring World. Ebony was ill that day and Stephanie had agreed to stop off to see her on her way home when she died. The crash happened at 7.54pm. 'It was literally a quick call,' explained Ebony. 'She worked that day - it was a Sunday - and I wasn't in. 'It was a quick catch up, really. A catch up with a friend, that's all. She was such a good friend, she'd been non-stop checking in throughout the day - but couldn't ring me until she finished work. 'We were on the phone and then it froze on Stephanie's face, and the call cut out.' I also rang Ivan's phone, both were disconnected and were being put through to voicemail.' Ebony said she waited 20 minutes and was 'still ringing during this time… just to try and find out what had happened'. She rang the police and found out there'd been a 'bad crash' in Brimsdown so 'drove around'. 'It wasn't too far from my house, it was about an 11-minute drive,' Ebony said. 'The road was blocked off. I hadn't been told who was involved in the crash or what had happened. 'I wasn't allowed to know any information.' She was then directed to The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel in the East End, where Stephanie had been taken. Holding back tears, Ebony said: 'I did everything I could that day and I wouldn't change anything. I went to the hospital… I wasn't allowed to know anything without Stephanie's mother knowing first.' 9 9 A screen shot she captured of Stephanie during the call, a few minutes before the crash, was shown in court. Ebony took to the stand to give evidence. She said: 'I was quite upset and ran out of the room immediately afterwards, and put myself together before returning.' Zailac suffers from amnesia and doesn't remember the details of what happened after suffering a brain injury in the collision and subsequent psychiatric issues. He had been ruled unfit to stand trial so the jury had to formally decide whether he did the act alleged, namely causing Stephanie's death by dangerous driving. The jury then found he did carry out the act. Judge Sarah Munro, KC, said Zailac will be supervised by a nominated social worker and the Hillingdon mental health team for two years. 'This is the only way your mental health can be restored in order for a decision to be made as to whether there are further legal consequences for you to face,' the judge said. Prosecutor Frederick Hookway told the court that the Crown intends to put Zailac on trial if he recovers. 'The objective of this order is for the improvement of the defendant's mental health not only for his own sake but for the future of these proceedings,' he said. 'The crown do intend to reinstitute these proceedings when and if appropriate.' Stephanie's mum Nicholle Diroyan sobbed as she read her victim impact statement at the Old Bailey on July 7. She said: 'The pain of losing her is immeasurable and every day without her feels incomplete.' Ebony, who now lives in Manchester, has launched a petition to try and ensure Stephanie's family get justice. 'There's been three years of constant delays and adjournments - and now we're told it'll be 2027 before we know if Ivan can even stand trial. 'It's the waiting. We're left in the dark.'. 'I feel so sorry for Stephanie's mum Nicholle - who's always at the court but then left frustrated each time.' Ebony added: 'We were told the jury returned a verdict in a record time. Quickest for death by dangerous driving for 27 years. 'Despite this clear outcome, family and friends are waiting for justice.' Referring to the two-year order, she said: 'It's a deterrent of the law, rather than an enforcement.' She added: 'That grievance, when everything is brought back up. I'm quite shaky on this call, it's traumatic to relive the tragic crash and death of Stephanie.' Ebony went on to say: 'Stephanie was the most lovely, genuine, outgoing person. She was there for her friends, she was there for her family. 'If anyone needed her, she'd message, she'd ring, she'd be there for you. To see her face in the newspaper in such a tragic way, and yet we're still yet to receive any justice, is so heartbreaking.' Stephanie had hired Ebony several months before, and was her manager before being promoted to the finance department shortly prior to her death. 'We became friends so quickly,' she said. 'The week before she died we were in Manchester and Nottingham, just enjoying ourselves. 'I was always going round to hers and picking her up or going for lunch break. 'Sometimes we'd get a takeaway into work and would be sitting there with 10 different Greggs items. She was amazing.' Ebony added: 'We believe she's looking down on us so proud of us all.'
