Lido Bottle Works shakes things up with new spirits program

Lido Bottle Works has established itself as a restaurant that cooks with the seasons. Since opening in 2016, the Newport Beach restaurant has prepared dishes with in-season produce from local farms for a menu that is always fresh.
Recently, the Lido Marina Village eatery, which earned a place in the California Michelin Guide in 2022, secured a full liquor license that allowed the restaurant to add cocktails to the drink menu that already boasted 15 beer taps and a collection of wine.
'We have been in the process of getting a liquor license for over a year, but we just launched a liquor program about three months ago,' said Zack Lovejoy, bar manager at Lido Bottle Works.
The resulting cocktail menu is one that continues their commitment to seasonality.
'I wanted to make sure the bar program matched the food program. Chef is all about using fresh ingredients and we wanted to do that same thing,' Lovejoy said, as he was heading out to the farmer's market on Thursday morning.
Executive chef Joel Gutierrez is using stone fruit on the menu now, Lovejoy notes, so he makes an effort to incorporate that into the cocktail menu too.
'Right now, I am about to go to the farmer's market to pick up peaches,' said Lovejoy.
The fresh fruit could end up in a cocktail that pairs well with the burrata and stone fruit salad, served with arugula, cornbread coutons and peach vinaigrette. Lovejoy also makes an effort to stock the bar with local and independently produced spirits.
'We are all about the little guy, the locals, so we are trying to pull as much local liquor as we can, including stuff like Redwood Bourbon out of San Fransisco,' said Lovejoy.
Gutierrez said he has enjoyed adding another layer of hospitality to the restaurant.
'Zack and I work really well together and we have been on this plan of trying to utilize the entire ingredient, so that nothing goes to waste,' said Gutierrez. 'Even if it is just garnishes, we are trying to use the byproduct of that ingredient, which is really what the restaurant has been doing since day one.'
To celebrate the new cocktail program, Lido Bottle Works is hosting a five-course tequila and mezcal cocktail pairing dinner on July 31 at 6 p.m., in partnership with El Cristiano Tequila.
Gutierrez will serve a menu that leans into the Mexican heritage of the tequila brand and Lovejoy will pair each course with a creative cocktail that considers the restaurant's signature seasonality. Guests can expect dishes like a summer squash tamal and braised short rib birria, served alongside libations like a cara cara plum margarita.
'Doing the beer and wine pairings dinners, I am pretty comfortable with those, but this was one of the first times we got to pair with liquor, ' said Gutierrez. 'We really wanted to keep it playful and have fun with it.'
For his part, Lovejoy has worked extensively with the staff to make sure they are not only trained in the signature cocktails on the menu, but also classic cocktails guest might ask for as the bar catches on.
'We are excited and just trying to bring in a cocktail program that is at the same level the food has always been at Lido Bottle Works and to the standard that is expected in Newport,' said Lovejoy.
Lido Bottle Works' tequila cocktail pairing dinner takes place on Thursday, July 31 at 6 p.m. at 3408 Via Oporto #103, Newport Beach. Tickets are priced at $150 per person and include tax and gratuity. To make a reservation, visit opentable.com

The Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia also reached tentative agreements with the administration that set their duties at 19-20 percent. Other countries, mainly smaller economies, face far higher rates, topping out at 41 percent for Syria, which is emerging from a civil war, and 40 percent for Myanmar, which is still in the midst of one. The Southeast Asian nation of Laos also faces a 40 percent tariff, and Iraq will be hit with a 35 percent duty. Bigger trading partners like Switzerland also face a significant tariff hike — to 39 percent. Trump also signed a second order raising tariffs on Canada, one of the country's biggest trading partners, from 25 to 35 percent for goods that are not compliant with an existing North American trade deal known as the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. The senior official told reporters that Canada hasn't 'shown the same level of constructiveness that we've seen from the Mexican side.' Trump announced earlier Thursday that he was maintaining the 25 percent tariff on Mexico for another 90 days after a phone call with their president, Claudia Sheinbaum. Higher tariffs on Canada take effect Friday. The executive actions suggests that Trump decided to punish countries that he did not believe offered enough concessions since the president first threatened to impose his 'reciprocal' tariffs on April 2. 'Some trading partners have agreed to, or are on the verge of agreeing to, meaningful trade and security commitments with the United States, thus signaling their sincere intentions to permanently remedy the trade barriers,' the global order says. 'Other trading partners, despite having engaged in negotiations, have offered terms that, in my judgment, do not sufficiently address imbalances in our trading relationship or have failed to align sufficiently with the United States on economic and national-security matters,' 'There are also some trading partners that have failed to engage in negotiations with the United States or to take adequate steps to align sufficiently with the United States on economic and national security matters,' it continues. White House officials said Thursday night that they expect to strike additional agreements with countries ahead of the new Aug. 7 implementation date for the tariffs. 'We have some deals, and I don't want to get ahead of the president on those deals,' the senior administration official told reporters. 'I'll just say generally, we have more to come.' Taiwan is hoping to be one of those countries. The semiconductor powerhouse faces a 20 percent tariff in a week's time, but in a statement released late Thursday, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te suggested the rate was 'provisional.' Both sides will also continue negotiations on supply chain cooperation and issues related to Section 232 tariffs.'

The city of Aurora and Mayor John Laesch are set to host on Monday a delegation from Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico that includes Morelia Mayor Alfonso Martinez Alcazar. Aurora city officials said in a news release Friday that the meeting set for 4 p.m. is planned to strengthen cultural ties, open lines of communication and spark discussions on how to build a stronger relationship between Aurora and Morelia. Leaders of both cities are expected to promote future collaboration and support a shared vision of greater connection, according to the city news release. The meeting will be an opportunity for Aurora to 'expand its international footprint, participate in a valuable exchange of ideas, and increase the opportunity for collaboration between Morelia and Aurora in the future,' Laesch said in the news release. Morelia is the Mexican state of Michoacen's capital and most populous city, with over 740,000 residents according to Mexico's 2020 census, Aurora's news release said. Plus, Morelia is also known for being a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its well-preserved historical buildings and layout of its historic center, Aurora officials said in the news release. The meeting, which was planned in partnership with El Club Morelia de Illinois, is set to take place at Aurora City Hall at 44 E. Downer Place. The site of Williamsburg's iconic '50s-style diner on Wythe Avenue — a longtime lodestar in one of the neighborhood's hippest corners — has officially traded hands for $12.5 million. The large corner lot, historically occupied by the steel frame of the shuttered Wythe Diner, is set to host a six-story mixed-use building. City records posted on Thursday confirmed the long-awaited sale. The $12.5 million deal closes a colorful chapter for the property, during which it lived many lives — as a classic railcar diner, a Mexican eatery, a coffee shop and even a Chanel pop-up. 5 The former Wythe Diner, located at the intersection of North 3rd Street. Eilon Paz The development is expected to include 5,000 square feet of ground-floor retail and 28 apartments above, according to a press release shared with The Post by commercial real estate brokerage TerraCRG. Plans to preserve the eye-catching prefab structure elsewhere will be announced in about a month. 'All parties collaborated thoughtfully to ensure the relocation and preservation of the vintage diner car, which is scheduled for removal post-closing,' the statement said. TerraCRG represented the property's former owner, Sandy Stillman, in the sale. Stillman operated the iconic diner Relish at the site from the late '90s to around 2010. She held on to the property through its many retail evolutions. 'What an amazing experience it was to serve this beauteous community in this sculpture of a restaurant with so much outdoor space in the early days of the BK food revolution, when it seemed as though nearly all customers were talking about art,' Stillman said in the statement. 5 The interior of the diner during its tenure as La Esquina, a Mexican restaurant. Google Earth Stillman praised the buyers 'above and beyond spiritual beauty, talent and desire to help save this shiny diner.' The shiny shell arrived at the intersection of Williamsburg's North 3rd Street in the 1950s. Wythe Diner remained in operation until the late 1980s. The property, including the 2,800-square-foot prefab, sold to Stillman in 1998. Under Stillman's ownership, the site hosted the Mexican eatery Cafe De La Esquina, a Blank Street coffee shop and a colorful Chanel fragrance pop-up for fall Fashion Week in 2023. A report in early July by Crain's New York detailed Williamsburg-based developer Yoel Schwimmer's prospective plans to transform the site into a roughly 24,600-square-foot building. The new owner of the Wythe Avenue corner shares an address with Schwimmer's OVV LLC, so it appears that Schwimmer's plans are moving forward. The final $12.5 million deal was brokered by Andrew Manasia and Daniel Lebor at TerraCRG. Schwimmer could not be reached for comment by press time.
