Air India Crash: Investigators Examine Tail Wreckage For Clues To Electrical Fault, Says Report

Officials familiar with the investigation said that the empennage, or tail assembly, showed signs of a 'contained electric fire' confined to a few components.
Investigators probing the June 12 crash of Air India flight AI-171 are focusing on the aircraft's tail section, which they believe could hold critical evidence about what went wrong during the 26 seconds the Boeing 787 Dreamliner was airborne after taking off from Ahmedabad airport.
Officials familiar with the investigation told The Indian Express that the empennage, or tail assembly, showed signs of a 'contained electric fire" confined to a few components.
This section was detached from the main fuselage during the crash and remained mostly unaffected by the subsequent explosion and fuel fire.
Key components from the tail have been recovered and secured in Ahmedabad for detailed analysis. 'They hold the key for a detailed analysis of a possible malfunction in the electric supply of the aircraft during lift-off," an official told The Indian Express.
The rear black box, or aft Enhanced Airborne Flight Recorder (EAFR), was found on the rooftop of the BJ Medical College hostel mess. It had suffered significant thermal damage, preventing data recovery through standard methods. When opened, the memory card was found to be extensively damaged.
According to the AAIB's preliminary report released on July 12, it contained around 49 hours of flight data, including six previous flights. The voice recordings recovered included two hours of audio, covering the crash sequence.
Although the tail struck the hostel building during impact, investigators noted the damage wasn't severe enough to explain the black box failure. Officials are examining whether the fire originated during take-off due to an electrical fault or resulted from the crash.
Along with the black box, other tail-section components such as the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), transducers, and rudders are also under scrutiny. The APU was found intact and has been retrieved for further examination.
The investigation is also considering a technical issue flagged before the crash.
A Pilot Defect Report was filed after the previous flight (AI-423 from Delhi to Ahmedabad) noting a 'STAB POS XDCR" status — referring to a stabiliser position sensor in the tail.
An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer reportedly troubleshooted the issue and cleared the aircraft for its next flight, AI-171, at 12:15 pm on June 12.

A total of nine show cause notices were issued to Air India in connection with five identified safety violations in the last six months and enforcement action has been completed with respect to one violation, the civil aviation ministry informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday. Last month, Air India's Boeing 787-8 aircraft enroute to London Gatwick from Ahmedabad crashed soon after take off, killing 260 people. Following the fatal accident, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) ordered additional checks of the airline's Boeing 787-8/9 aircraft. As many as 81 people were injured in the accident. 'Out of total 33 aircraft, 31 operational aircraft have been inspected wherein minor findings were observed in 8 aircraft. These aircraft have been released for operation post rectification. The remaining 2 aircraft are under scheduled maintenance,' Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said in a written reply. He was responding to a question from BJP member Ashokrao Shankarrao Chavan. Meanwhile, in a separate written reply, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said that during the last six months, no adverse trend was reported in reliability reports of Air India in respect of crashed aircraft. However, he said that during the last six months, a total of nine show cause notices have been issued to Air India in connection with five identified safety violations. 'Enforcement action has been completed in respect of one violation,' Mohol said in response to queries from CPI(M) member John Brittas. Specific details were not disclosed. Mohol, in another written reply, said that every aspect is being looked into for determining the probable causes/contributory factors leading to the accident. His answer was to DMK leader Kanimozhi NVN Somu's queries, including whether any sabotage by any person or any agency has come to the light. In another written reply to RJD member Manoj Kumar Jha, Naidu said DGCA has a structured surveillance and audit framework in place. These include planned and unplanned surveillance of organisation /aircraft such as regular and periodic audits, spot checks, night surveillance and ramp inspections across all operators and maintenance organisations. DGCA has done 254 enforcement actions this year till April while there were 673 such actions in 2024. There were 542 enforcement actions in 2023, the minister said. Air India issued 9 show cause notices in 6 months over safety lapses: Govt

The government issued nine show-cause notices to Air India for safety violations in the last six months, with enforcement action taken in one case, the civil aviation minister informed Rajya Sabha Deepak Patel New Delhi The central government has issued nine show-cause notices to Air India in the past six months for five safety violations, with enforcement action completed in one case, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Muralidhar Mohol told Rajya Sabha on Monday. In a written reply, Mohol also said that 71 aircraft belonging to various carriers were damaged at Indian airports in the first six months of 2025 due to 511 bird strikes and 16 animal strikes. No injuries or fatalities were reported from such incidents in the past five years. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has conducted three safety audits of Air India— in September 2020, March 2023, and March 2025—and found no major lapses. However, the regulator did follow up with the airline to ensure corrective actions were taken, he added. Between 2020 and 2025, DGCA took enforcement action in three complaints against Air India. These included a ₹30 lakh penalty, suspension of three licences, withdrawal of one post holder's approval, and five warnings. Mohol also said Air India was fully compliant with DGCA regulations at the time of its disinvestment. "During the last six months, a total of nine show-cause notices have been issued to Air India in connection with five identified safety violations. Rebels in Colombia attack military patrol with drone, killing 3 soldiers

Bogota, Jul 21 (AP) Rebels in northeastern Colombia used a drone to attack a military patrol in a rural area, killing three soldiers and injuring eight, the military said. The army blamed the attack on the National Liberation Army, or ELN, a group of approximately six thousand fighters that has been fighting the Colombian government since the 1960s. The attack took place Sunday outside the town of El Carmen in the Catatumbo region, the military said in a statement. Rebel groups in Colombia are increasingly using drones to attack the military and to attack each other as they fight for control of rural areas. They mostly use commercial photography drones with explosives strapped to them, flying them straight into their targets. Colombia's Defense Ministry says that rebel groups launched 115 drone attacks last year. Sunday's drone attack is the one of the deadliest on record. Colombia's government has struggled to contain violence in rural areas that were formerly under the control of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, the guerrilla group that made peace with the government in 2016. Several smaller rebel groups and drug gangs are now fighting over the control of areas abandoned by the FARC, where illicit activities like drug trafficking and illegal mining are common. In January, Colombia's government suspended peace talks with the National Liberation Army, following a spate of attacks in the Catatumbo region, in which at least 80 people were killed and 50,000 were forced to flee their homes.
