Bitcoin buyer Metaplanet overtakeschipmaker Kioxia in m-cap, stock soars 400% in 2 months
Metaplanet's market value surpassed ¥1 trillion ($6.9 billion) for the first time on Monday, extending gains which also took it past chipmaker Screen Holdings Co. and Tokyo Metro Co., operator of one of the world's biggest subway systems.
The stock rocketed 26% Monday as it announced its purchase of ¥16.9 billion worth of Bitcoin which hit a record of $111,980 on May 22. Metaplanet has plans to raise about $5.4 billion to add to its Bitcoin stockpile. The company is among a growing cadre of listed entities globally that have followed the strategy adopted by Strategy, the software maker that has amassed more than $60 billion of the original digital asset.
Over a five-year period, Metaplanet shares have soared more than 3,000%.
But not everyone is convinced Metaplanet's rally will last. Short positions have grown to about 23% of its free float as of June 12, the largest among Tokyo-listed companies of at least that size, according to data from S&P Global.
Listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's Standard section for medium-sized companies and basic governance standards, Metaplanet is the largest stock on the bourse without any analyst coverage, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Two of the world's largest cryptocurrency companies are poised to secure licences granting them access to operate across the European Union, as a rift grows among regulators over the speed and rigour of some countries' approvals, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Under the EU's new Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation, which came into force earlier this year, member states can issue licences that allow crypto companies to operate throughout the 27-nation bloc, but some have raised concerns in closed-door meetings about the speed with which licences are being granted, two people familiar with those discussions said, asking not to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter.
At stake is the oversight of the multi-trillion-dollar crypto industry, which regulators have long warned could facilitate fraud, market instability and illicit financial flows if it is not properly supervised.

NTT seeks up to $864 million in data centre REIT's Singapore IPO
SYDNEY | SINGAPORE: Japanese telecom giant NTT is seeking to raise roughly $864 million in a Singapore IPO for a data centre REIT if an overallotment option is included, according to a term sheet that marked the start of the bookbuilding process. NTT DC REIT's portfolio comprises six data centre assets located in the United States, Austria and Singapore, according to a preliminary prospectus filed on Friday. The value of the base offering is between $772 million and $812 million while the overallotment option would add another $51.5 million, the term sheet sheet showed. "We are not able to provide further details except for those officially announced by our company," NTT said in an emailed response to Reuters' request seeking comment on Monday. If the yield is priced at 7.5%, the overallotment would exercised. If fully exercised, NTT would be left with a 20% stake in the REIT. The REIT is being marketed at an indicative forecast distribution yield of 7% to 7.5% for July-March on an annualised basis and 7.29% to 7.80% for the next financial year. The REIT would have a market cap of up to $1.08 billion, the term sheet also showed. Bookbuilding is due to end on Friday with listing set for July 14. Cornerstone investors in the IPO include Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC with a $101 million investment, according to the term sheet. The Singapore Exchange has seen growing interest from companies seeking to list after it announced measures in February to strengthen its equities market, including a 20% tax rebate for primary listings. Hong Kong-listed China Medical System said last week it had applied for a secondary listing of its shares on the bourse. Other companies seeking to list in Singapore include the city-state's Foundation Healthcare Holdings. IPO proceeds raised on the Singapore Exchange surged more than five-fold to $331.6 million in the first half of this year from a year earlier, while the last listing of similar size was a $977 million IPO for Digital Core REIT in 2021, according to LSEG.

"The price structure has turned fragile post-June 30, with lower highs and lows, and it's now trading below its 21- and 51-day simple moving averages. The $108,000 breakout attempt failed, with immediate support seen at $106,800–$106,500," she said, as quoted ET. Ethereum hovered near its 21-day SMA. 'A decisive breakout above $110,000–112,000 could propel BTC toward $125,000. Failure to break out might lead to a retest of the $100,000 mark.' He added that ETF inflows and expectations of US Fed rate cuts are driving long-term bullish sentiment, though geopolitical risks and short-term volatility remain concerns. The CoinDCX Research Team said Bitcoin continues to consolidate below resistance with rising bearish pressure, while Ethereum is losing momentum. "However, altcoins like XRP, BNB, SOL, and TRX are showing relative strength," the team noted. Bitcoin Cash and Algorand rose over 4%, while Pudgy Penguins and Four gained 3.3% and 2%, respectively.
