Announced on Wednesday, two Alabama Crimson Tide linebackers have been named to the preseason watch list for the 2025 Butkus Award.
Those two players are returning starter Deontae Lawson and Justin Jefferson, with the award presented annually to the nation's top linebacker.
Lawson, who is coming off an injury late in the season, will be entering his fifth season at Alabama this fall, as well as his third as a starter. The redshirt senior also compiled a career-high 76 tackles a year ago for the Crimson Tide, along with seven TFL, two sacks, and an interception.
As for Jefferson, the redshirt senior had a breakout season a year ago for the Crimson Tide in which he posted a career-best 60 tackles with seven TFL and two sacks.
The Butkus Award is one that Alabama was won four times previously, the first of which came back in 1988 with Derrick Thomas. Alongside Thomas, the other three winners were Rolando McClain (2009), C.J. Mosley (2013), and Reuben Foster (2016).

When are the AP preseason Top 25 college football rankings released? Will Texas be No. 1?

Find out the release date for the 2025 preseason AP Top 25 Ranking The preseason US LBM Coaches Poll is out and for the first time in school history, the Texas Longhorns are ranked No. 1. The ranking, combined with Ohio State's No. 2 ranking, makes history. The Longhorns-Buckeyes matchup will be the first No. 1 vs. No. 2 Week 1 matchup in history. But what about the AP Top 25 Ranking? Is Texas No. 1 in it? The answer is - we don't know yet. The AP Poll traditionally comes out after the Coaches Poll, whether it is preseason or during the year. When is the AP Top 25 college football rankings released? The AP will reveal its Top 25 college football rankings on Monday, August 11 around Noon ET. The poll will populate the rankings link of USA TODAY Sports (and other sites) soon after. The rankings will also be posted on X/Twitter. How often does the Preseason No. 1 win the National Title? Not much. Since the year 2000, only USC (2004) and Alabama (2017) have started and ended the season No. 1. The '17 Alabama team is the only team to stay No. 1 the entire campaign. A team does want to start in the Top 5 though. Over the past decade, only one team, LSU (2019), was ranked outside the Top 5 in the preseason AP Poll and the Tigers were No. 6. What if Texas is No. 1 in the preseason AP Top 25? It will be a nice feather in the cap of the program. It is like good PR. More fans, analysts and TV pundits will be talking about the Longhorns. Will it add pressure? Maybe. We'll see what this team is really made of in Columbus, OH on Aug. 30.

What Jordan Addison's suspension means for fantasy football drafts

What Jordan Addison's suspension means for fantasy football drafts originally appeared on The Sporting News The NFL announced Tuesday that it is suspending Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison for the first three games of the season due to his violation of the league's Substances of Abuse Policy. Addison will miss the Vikings' first three games of the 2025 season: (1) at the Chicago Bears, (2) home against the Atlanta Falcons, and (3) home against the Cincinnati Bengals. Does the finalization of Addison's ban affect his value in fantasy football drafts? Will any Vikings players pick up extra stats in his absence? Read on for the initial reaction. What's Jordan Addison's fantasy value now that he's suspended? The early fantasy NFL draft market was already pricing in a league-imposed absence, slotting him at 79th overall as WR35. Fantasy drafters could still consider Addison a low-end WR3, as long as they prepare properly for his absence. Kevin O'Connell's offensive system helped the USC alum continue his success during his sophomore season (63 catches, 875 yards, 9 TD) as the complement to No. 1 receiver Justin Jefferson. The other chief question surrounding Addison is how smooth the transition will be from the exiting Sam Darnold to "rookie" quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who wasn't asked to pass downfield often during his college tenure for Michigan, the 2023 national champions. Much of Addison's value comes from his air yardage that sets him up for big plays. He ranked 18th among NFL pass-catchers with 1,284 air yards last year, per FantasyPros. Here's McCarthy trying his best to put those concerns to rest in camp: At the price of a top-36 wideout, the floor is low enough for him to surpass expectations on both the suspension and the QB uncertainty fronts -- especially if he falls into the 40s at his position's ADP. Buy any dip. What Jordan Addison's suspension means for Vikings fantasy players QB J.J. McCarthy McCarthy is worth drafting in 1QB leagues but is mostly a stash in those games, more primarily a sound target for superflex, 2QB, and dynasty setups. In the latter group, McCarthy could still provide useful QB2 numbers in that three-game window. WR Justin Jefferson Though Jefferson likely won't be impacted by this expected suspension, his current hamstring injury should be watched. TE T.J. Hockenson Any targets left behind for the first three weeks by one or both wideouts would mostly shift toward tight end T.J. Hockenson, who's oming off his erratic but promising return in 2024 following recovery from ACL and MCL tears in his right knee. Hockenson is already being drafted as a top-5 tight end. RBs Aaron Jones, Jordan Mason This duo already is slated for split work, and both fantasy RB3s could see extra routes in Addison's absence. No need to adjust their value too much. WR Jalen Nailor The Michigan State alum scored 6 touchdowns last season, including one in each of the first three games. Nailor didn't record much volume across those games, though, catching 7 of 9 targets total. Still, fantasy managers in deeper leagues could take a waiver-wire streamer risk with Nailor if they're in a bind with either Addison or Jefferson, especially if the latter's injury prognosis worsens after fantasy drafts.

NFL suspends Vikings' Jordan Addison for three games over DUI case

Addison, the 23rd pick of the 2023 draft, has 19 touchdowns and 1,786 receiving yards in his first two seasons to form a dominant duo with two-time All-Pro Justin Jefferson. But he was arrested for excessive speeding the week before training camp of his rookie year, and the drunken driving arrest last offseason came after another dangerous off-the-field decision. Addison was contrite and remorseful upon reporting to training camp last year, praising the Vikings for their support after he said he was in a 'dark place' after the arrest. Enter Email Sign Up Without Addison for the first three games, new starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy will need to lean on depth wide receivers such as Jalen Nailor, rookie Tai Felton, and newcomer Rondale Moore if he's ready to play following his ACL rehabilitation. Tight ends T.J. Hockenson and Josh Oliver and running back Aaron Jones also figure to be vital options during Addison's absence to help keep defenses from keying more heavily on Jefferson than they already do. Randy Moss (28), Rob Gronkowski (27), and Ja'Marr Chase (22) were the only ones with more. Advertisement
