Lithuania charges three with defacing anti-Soviet monument
COPENHAGEN - A Lithuanian prosecutor said on Wednesday he had charged three people with defacing a monument to an anti-Soviet resistance leader in January 2024, and that Russian intelligence was the main organiser behind the act.
Prosecutor Rimas Bradunas told a press conference two of the three charged are dual Estonian-Russian citizens, while one is a Russian citizen.
When asked at the press conference about any involvement of Russia's GRU military intelligence agency in the act, Bradunas said: "That was the main organizer, without doubt, yes".
Two of the three detained were arrested in Estonia and handed over to Lithuania, he said. REUTERS

The case is the third investigation since 2023 that has led to the arrest of port workers on drug trafficking charges. The suspects, employed by a private company handling cargo operations at Piraeus port were arrested on Monday. On Friday they responded to charges including participation in an international criminal organisation at least since 2024, according to police officials. They have denied wrongdoing. The drugs were concealed in refrigerated containers loaded with bananas which were shipped from Ecuador, the police said. Greek police said the investigation, which revealed the gang's tactics and included surveillance of their communications, was launched after a tip-off by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The criminal ring, led by an Albanian gang, exploited the workers' access to port facilities and knowledge of loading and unloading cargo procedures, the police officials said. The alleged gang members were tasked with locating the ships and extracting the cocaine parcels from the containers, and one of them was in contact with the drug buyers in Albania, the officials added. Six of them were later detained pending trial and a seventh suspect was released. South American production of cocaine has surged over the past decade, with traffickers helping to turn Europe into a major consumer and a transit point for cocaine. Mr Zelensky, speaking in his nightly video address, said Ukraine's top commander, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, told a meeting of senior officials that the situation around Pokrovsk was the current focal point of its attention in the war, which began when Russia invaded in February 2022. 'All operational directions were covered, with particular focus on Pokrovsk. It receives the most attention,' Mr Zelensky said. Ukrainian forces, he said, were also 'continuing to act' in border areas in the northern Sumy region, where Russian troops have gained a foothold in recent weeks. Gen Syrskyi, in a separate report on the Telegram messaging app, described Pokrovsk and five other sectors as among the most difficult theatres along the 1,000km front. 'The Russian Federation is paying the maximum price for attempting a 'summer offensive',' Gen Syrskyi wrote. Russia's Defence Ministry on July 24 announced the capture of two villages on either side of Pokrovsk - Zvirove to the west and Novoekonomichne to the east. A third village near the city - Novotoretske - was declared by Moscow to be 'liberated' earlier in the week. Ukrainian officials have made no acknowledgement that the villages have changed hands. The General Staff of Ukraine's military said in an evening report that two of them - Zvirove and Novoekonomichne - were in areas where Russian troops were trying to penetrate Ukrainian defences. In the Sumy region, where Russian troops are trying to establish what Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin calls a 'buffer zone', the popular Ukrainian military blog DeepState said Kyiv's forces had retaken a previously lost village. DeepState, which relies on open source reports to track the presence of Russian forces, said Ukrainian troops had restored control over the village of Kindrativka.
