Is now the time to buy or sell a used car? As new sales dip, what to know
Canadians are buying fewer new cars as the economic pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs mounts. It may leave consumers wondering: should they try their luck on the used car market? Consumers in Canada spent less money in May, with retail sales in Canada falling 1.1 per cent in May to $69.2 billion, Statistics Canada said. Canada's auto industry seems to have taken the brunt of falling retail sales, with motor vehicles and parts dealers recording a drop of 3.6 per cent in retail sales in May. The integrated nature of the North American auto supply chain means tariffs also hit car prices. 'We heard stories about people going running out to the dealer to buy a car or a part for their car before those tariffs started to kick in. We really started to see that in April. So we did expect a pullback (in auto sales) as those tariffs actually came into play starting in May,' BMO economist Shelly Kaushik said. This was the first time since February that Canada saw sales at new car dealerships decline, Statistics Canada said. But as new car sales plummeted, some used car platforms and dealerships say they saw sales go up. 'We saw a massive spike in May. We saw — I think this was true for both of ourselves and for dealerships — significant demand for (used) cars in May,' said Dan Park, CEO of used car e-commerce platform Clutch. 'We were about 10 per cent up month over month, which was pretty substantial,' he said. Park said his platform expects sales to go up in the months ahead, with July on track to be a 'record' month. But as demand increases for used cars, you'll see prices go up because there's more demand for used cars with a fixed amount of supply,' he said. However, used car dealers are finding that they simply don't have enough cars to satisfy customer demand. 'Since the middle of last year, the overall used car inventory has been slowly going down,' Akyurek said. Some of these production issues go back all the way to the supply chain disruptions the industry faced during the start of the pandemic, Park said. Roll forward a couple years, there's just fewer used cars on the road and available for sale,' he said. However, one segment where prices seem to be coming down is battery electric vehicles. 'EV prices are actually doing pretty well for consumers. They have been coming down both for new and used,' Akyurek said, adding that the average price for a used battery-powered EV is just over $44,000 in the current market. There is particularly low demand for Tesla's EVs, Park said. 'Given some of the Tesla political backlash, you can find really great Tesla prices right now. 'It's a better time (to sell your car) than it was this time last year, with prices going up right now. It means that the value of your car hasn't gone down as much. That's up from $842 million in the same period a year earlier, capturing revenue from retaliatory tariffs that Prime Minister Mark Carney has levied on imports of some US goods. The proceeds from the tariffs are helping to offset a decrease in corporate income tax and government sales tax revenue, which are down 15% and 17% respectively from a year earlier. That decrease is likely due to slowing economic activity caused by trade uncertainty. Analysts in a Bloomberg survey say Canada's economy is expected to contract at a 0.4% annualized rate in the second quarter. Carney's election campaign platform put expected tariff revenues at about $20 billion this fiscal year, and the prime minister has pledged to redistribute any proceeds to sectors and workers hit hardest by US President Donald Trump's barrage of trade levies on aluminum, steel and autos. As the two countries eye a potential trade agreement on August 1, questions are mounting as to whether Carney will proceed with more reciprocal levies should a deal with Trump fail to materialize — so far he's held off on a dollar-for-dollar response, though some of the country's provincial leaders have advocated for more aggressive action. Combined, total federal government revenue in the two months was little changed relative to the same period last fiscal year, holding at around $79.6 billion. Federal government program expenses are rising, the data show, and are up 4% from the previous fiscal year, totaling $75.8 billion. Employment insurance benefits are 9.1% higher, while operating expenses rose 7.3% to $18.6 billion. Debt charges rose 3.8% to $9.6 billion. U.S. and Canada might not reach trade deal, Trump says
U.S. President Donald Trump says his country may not reach a new trade deal with Canada and could simply impose more or higher tariffs on its northern neighbour — something he's threatening to do in one week's time. We haven't really had a lot of luck with Canada, Trump told reporters Friday outside the White House in response to a question about the state of tariff talks with U.S. trading partners. I think Canada could be one where there's just a tariff, not really a negotiation, he said, before departing on a trip to Scotland. It's the first time Trump has publicly spoken about the state of talks with Canada in nearly two weeks. Trump sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney on July 10, threatening (new window) to hit Canada with 35 per cent tariffs on Aug. 1. That rate would apply to Canadian exports currently being tariffed at 25 per cent, under Trump's emergency powers (new window) , citing the national security threat from fentanyl trafficking. Most Canadian goods are exempt from that tariff, provided they meet the North American content rules of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). Separately, Canadian steel and aluminum are facing a 50 per cent tariff that the U.S. has imposed on such imports from all countries, while the U.S. tariff on Canadian energy and potash is set at 10 per cent. After Carney met with Canada's premiers, Nova Scotia's Tim Houston said the prime minister isn't dead set on signing a deal by the deadline.
