Anyone in those areas who has not upgraded from 3G will still be able to make phone calls and send text messages, but will not be able to use mobile data.Jeanie York, Virgin Media O2's chief technology officer, said: "While we know the vast majority of our customers already have a 4G or 5G device and will not have to take any action, our priority is to provide support to those who need it."That is why we are reaching out directly to customers who do not have a 4G or 5G handset, and calling those we know are vulnerable, to provide information about their next steps."It is important these customers upgrade their handsets in order to continue using mobile data after 3G is switched off."The 3G network, launched two decades ago, now carries only 3% of all network data, and will be switched off completely by Virgin by the end of 2025.

Death of the British summer holiday job: Hospitality job postings fall by more than 20,000 in a year as industry blames Rachel Reeves' Budget
Rachel Reeves ' budget has been blamed for killing the British summer holiday job with hospitality postings falling by more than 20,000 in a year. The drastic reduction comes despite a booming tourism industry which saw visitors in England spending £48.4 billion on day visits in 2024, a six per cent rise from the previous year. Job postings for temporary hospitality work is down 25% year-on-year, with 22,369 fewer unique postings for jobs this year compared to last, according to data from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC). In 2024 there were 88,414 hospitality jobs on offer, but that fell markedly to 66,045 in a single year. Meanwhile, the number of tourism jobs have also been largely reduced. This year there have been just 15,650 unique unique job postings, a 14 per cent drop from the 18,118 last year. The fall in employment opportunities will largely impact students and teenagers looking for their first jobs and will threaten the temporary job market as schools and universities break up for the summer, according to UKHospitality, a trade body for the industry. It will put at the risk the skills provided by having hospitality as a first job, they claim. Allen Simpson, Chief Executive of UKHospitality, said: 'This is the time when hospitality businesses would be frantically hiring staff for the busy summer months, when the sector expects to welcome families to their hotels, and serve millions of people with ice cream on the beach, fish and chips on the pier, and cold pints in the pub garden. 'I know from personal experience how important hospitality summer jobs are for getting young people experience of work, however hiring this year has fallen off dramatically, with 22,000 fewer jobs available compared to last year. 'It is sadly reflective of the impact we have seen from increased costs over the past nine months – less employment, less opportunity and less growth in the economy. The reduction in hiring comes after Labour chancellor Rachel Reeves hiked the National Insurance rates for employers. The October budget also lowered the threshold for when employers must start paying the tax, as she looked to raise around £20 billion. It has resulted in £3.4bn in additional annual cost for hospitality businesses, with 84,000 job losses, UKHospitality estimates. Mr Simpson added: 'Unless the Government acts, we could well be seeing the death of the great British summer job. That's not good for the economy, for businesses, or for the people that need this flexible work during the summer. 'We need to see action at the Budget to reverse this damage. That starts with fixing NICs, lowering business rates and cutting VAT for hospitality businesses.' Neil Carberry, REC Chief Executive, said: 'Hospitality is one of the UK's biggest entry points into work, but right now, we are shutting people out before they even get a foot in the door. 'A drop of over 22,000 job postings as we reach the height of the summer season is not just a staffing gap, it is a red flag for the wider economy. It puts recruiters, hospitality businesses and customers under massive pressure to make the most of the short-lived English summer. 'We cannot keep loading new costs onto employers if we want vibrant high streets, thriving pubs and strong local economies.

Newcastle's Lit & Phil library funding 'will expand future'
A 200-year-old independent library has been awarded funding, which trustees hope will stop it from becoming "stagnant".The Lit & Phil, in Newcastle, which opened in 1825, houses a collection of more than 200,000 books and has received development funding of just over £274,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to help broaden its Mary Durkin said it meant the Grade II* listed building, on Westgate Road, would now not be in danger of deteriorating, and the library had a history that "northerners should be proud of and other people must recognise". The building is steeped in history and has hosted events with notable figures such as Oscar Wild and EM Literary & Philosophical Society of Newcastle upon Tyne, which was founded in 1793, created the library as a forum for sharing ideas in the early years of the Industrial Revolution. Ms Durkin said the initial development grant would help to expand its outreach programme to communities and schools, as well as improve its digital year, the Barbour Foundation - the charitable arm of the South Shields-based fashion brand Barbour - provided £1m of funding to the society, which will see a lift installed in 2026 and accessible toilets built this summer. The funding also means the society trustees can progress their plans to apply for a full National Lottery capital grant of £4.5m at a later date."The building needs work, its 200 years old and it would deteriorate, there's no question about that and our reach would narrow without funding, and there would be a fear we possibly would stay a bit stagnant."Trustees said if a larger grant was awarded, it would allow for major renovation works to take place, including improving access and the reconfiguration of the library's ground society said a renovated Lit & Phil could open in November 2028, if funding was approved. Young Bridgnorth players to operate robot at Women's Euro final
Three girls from a youth football club will remotely operate a robot inside the UEFA Women's Euro final on youngsters from Bridgnorth Spartans in Shropshire will use a laptop to control the roaming device - which is a computer screen on two metal legs - inside St Jakob-Park in Basel for England's game against means they will be able to virtually explore the stadium, interact with players and presenters, and experience the game from the inside."Chloe, Phoebe and Poppy - three of our youth players - have been trained to drive the robot and will be representing the club on one of the biggest stages in women's football," said Anne Johnson, the Spartans' women's football lead. "These kinds of experiences build aspirations, create lasting memories, and show our girls what's possible."The opportunity to use the robot, which is supported by UEFA and provided by French technology company Awabot, came through the Make-a-Wish children's charity, which grants wishes to those who are seriously ill. The charity was running a pilot scheme, with hopes to roll it out in their own girls took part in the project earlier in the tournament, against the Netherlands, Sweden and welcomed players and officials to the grounds, toured dressing rooms, and watched the warm-up, and even spoke to former Lioness Jill Scott, as well as head coach Serena Wiegman."It's been an amazing journey so far, and now we've been invited back for the final," said Ms Johnson.
