Burger King menu brings unexpected international collaboration to US
American fast-food chains often seem to save the most exciting limited-time menu items for their international markets - often launching exotic desserts, crazy burgers, and unexpected partnerships in other countries. While factors out of their control may lead them to make these choices, it's hard not to wonder if U.S. consumers are being left out of all the fun releases on purpose. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Fast-food giants like McDonald's (MCD) , Burger King, and Starbucks (SBUX) frequently find themselves at the center of these speculations, which can lead to backlash from their own customers. Related: McDonald's puts popular Pokemon promotion back on the menu When Starbucks Japan gets a cool new seasonal Frappuccino, McDonald's Singapore unveils a new Crispy Mac 'N Cheesy Wrap, and Burger King releases an exciting collaboration anywhere but in the U.S., jealousy can get the best of anyone, prompting some of us to make one or two nasty comments on social media. Restaurant Brands International's (QSR) Burger King partnered with Naruto, the iconic manga series, to debut a limited-time menu collaboration in Brazil last December. This launch featured a King Jr. Meal with Naruto-themed toys, food, and packaging. It also consisted of four new items on the regular menu, including a shake, fries with toppings, a crispy chicken burger, and a new Whopper. The collaboration was so successful in the Brazilian market that Burger King released it in France only a month later. Additionally, Burger King x Naruto merchandise was released to make it unique for the French market. The partnership gained traction worldwide, especially across the U.S., with fans asking for the Naruto collaboration to be brought nationally. However, months flew by without updates, leaving American fans with little hope of its U.S. debut - until now. Burger King has unveiled that it will finally bring its Naruto collaboration to the U.S. on July 21, but it's being more cautious. This new national launch will be a King Jr. Meal with unique toys featuring the show's most iconic characters, including Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, Sakura Haruno, Kakashi Hatake, Hinata Hyuga, Neji Hyuga, Rock Lee, and Gaara. However, this latest release is entirely different from its international launches because, as exciting as this is, no Naruto-themed food or beverage will be included. Related: Burger King menu goes big with new Whopper-style double burger Malaysia will simultaneously get its own Naruto King Jr. Meal, but Naruto-themed food and drinks will be included for this launch, as will new immersive fan experiences at select locations. Burger King has not revealed why the U.S. won't get Naruto-themed food or beverages, but there seems to be a pattern tied to this decision. Although Naruto has a global following, its biggest fan base is in Asia, which is fitting given its Japanese origins. The series is also very popular in Brazil and France and ranks as the top kids' show. The manga series has a solid U.S. following, as it has been translated into English to meet fans' demand. Still, its American fandom is much smaller than its Asian, European, and South American counterparts. McDonald's brings back a fan-favorite Happy Meal collaboration
As adults, we now appreciate the value of food, but as kids, if we could've ordered a McDonald's Happy Meal toy and had the McNuggets thrown in as a courtesy, we absolutely would have. McDonald's is one of the most recognizable fast-food chains worldwide. This might be because for decades, it has maintained its iconic golden arches, red and yellow branding, "I'm Lovin' It" tag line, and beloved Happy Meal. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter The company has strategically used customers' nostalgic association with its brand to build a loyal fan base and become the fast-food giant it is today. Related: McDonald's menu adds new Happy Meal fans will love To bank on this emotional connection, McDonald's has brought back classic Happy Meal toys, including its 40th Happy Meal anniversary release in Canada in 2019, and the recent launch of "Lil McDonald's" Happy Meals this month. Image source: Sharrett/Bloomberg via Getty Images In January, McDonald's (MCD) partnered with Pokémon to launch a nationwide collaboration, releasing a new Happy Meal and creating an immersive PokéStops experience. Each Happy Meal featured a Dragon-type Pokémon design and came with a Pokémon Trading Card Game pack containing four out of 15 available cards, a Pokémon poster, and a sticker sheet. More Food News: This popular fast-food burger chain just turned into a hot dog standPopular chicken chain is begging customers to give it another chanceChick-fil-A offers free food to game-playing fans To encourage customers to download its app and continue its digital integration within Happy Meals, McDonald's also created a free Pokémon Trading Card Game. This was a unique partnership for the fast-food giant because Pokémon Trading Cards are among the most valuable and highly desired collectible items, with some worth up to millions of dollars per card. Pokémon is a Japanese world-renowned media franchise that began in 1996. It has developed an enormous fan base by creating multiple video games, animated series, films, products, and trading card games. McDonald's is once again teaming up with Pokémon for a limited-time partnership, but this time, it comes with multiple layers and will only be released in Japan. Because Pokémon has a fan base of all ages, McDonald's is introducing a 15-piece Chicken McNuggets box to cater to adult audiences. The packaging will feature three new designs, showcasing Pikachu and other beloved characters from the franchise. The Pokémon 15-piece Chicken McNuggets box will be available from July 23 to September 2. No Pokémon collaboration would be complete without the Happy Meal, which continues to be the primary appeal to younger audiences. Starting August 8, each Happy Meal will come with a Pikachu or Charmander toy. Related: McDonald's unveils new partnership with nostalgic childhood franchise True Pokémon fans know the most anticipated part of this partnership is the return of Pokémon Trading Cards. That's why each Happy Meal purchase will receive an exclusive Pikachu card, with additional cards randomly distributed. However, the Pokémon Trading Cards will only be available from August 9 to 11. Although the company hasn't explicitly revealed why it has made the trading cards available for such a short window, this unexpected decision might be an effort to prevent resales from getting out of hand, since the cards from previous partnerships were listed on eBay and other sites for hundreds of dollars. New ‘Knives Out' mystery and Clement Virgo thriller ‘Steal Away' among TIFF premieres
Clement Virgo's new psychological thriller and Rian Johnson's latest 'Knives Out' mystery will be among the world premieres lighting up the 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival. 'Steal Away,' directed by Virgo, stars Angourie Rice and Mallori Johnson as two teenage girls whose intense bond shatters the illusions of their sheltered world. The Canadian-Belgian co-production is the Toronto filmmaker's followup to his acclaimed 2022 drama 'Brother.' It's inspired by the 2017 book 'Steal Away Home,' which tells the true story of Cecelia Reynolds, a 15-year-old slave who fled to Canada. 'Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,' written and directed by Johnson, sees Daniel Craig reprise his role as Southern-fried detective Benoit Blanc. It's touted as his most dangerous case yet, alongside a cast that includes Josh O'Connor, Josh Brolin and Mila Kunis. They're among 11 official selections announced by TIFF Wednesday, including Nicholas Hytner's First World War dramedy 'The Choral' and Agnieszka Holland's Franz Kafka biopic 'Franz.' TIFF runs from Sept. 4 to 14 and will open with 'John Candy: I Like Me,' a documentary on the late Canadian comic. Other special presentations announced by TIFF include 'Rental Family' from Japanese writer/director Mitsuyo Miyazaki (also known as Hikari), which stars Brendan Fraser as a struggling actor in Tokyo who starts working for a company that rents him out for stand-in roles in clients' lives. Paul Greengrass's survival drama 'The Lost Bus,' inspired by true events, stars Matthew McConaughey as a bus driver who must steer a bus full of children to safety through the 2018 Camp Fire, which became known as the deadliest fire in California history. Derek Cianfrance's dramedy 'Roofman,' starring Channing Tatum, tells the true story of fugitive Jeffrey Manchester, a former U.S. Army Ranger who robbed McDonald's restaurants by cutting holes in their roofs and evaded the police for six months by living inside of a Toys 'R' Us store. Neeraj Ghaywan's 'Homebound,' meanwhile, follows two childhood friends in a northern Indian village whose goal of joining the police force is jeopardized as growing disillusionment strains their bond. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 16, 2025.
