Taiwan shuts down key bridge for military drill to stop Chinese forces from entering Taipei
shut a key bridge in Greater Taipei on Tuesday for a military drill, simulating Taipei's effort to stop
Chinese forces
from moving towards the capital city, Central News Agency (CNA) reported.
The
Wanban Bridge
, which links New Taipei's Banqiao District to Taipei's Wanhua District, was entirely shut down from 11 pm (local time) on Monday to 6 am (local time) on Tuesday to facilitate the drill. Troops constructed a four-tier blockade on the 690-meter span within two hours, demonstrating Taiwan's rapid response capability against potential Chinese ground incursions.
The blockade combined military fortifications with civilian resources, layered roadblocks, barbed wire, city buses, and newly acquired
Hesco bastions
, modern wire mesh barriers used in war zones like Iraq and Afghanistan.

The exercise simulated a
People's Liberation Army
(PLA) attempt to breach the bridge using disguised military vehicles, a plausible "gray zone" tactic often employed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to blur the line between war and peace.
Military police deployed drones to detect the simulated enemy before engaging in a defensive firefight. In the scenario, PLA units broke through three of the four barricade layers before being neutralised by Taiwanese snipers and armoured "Clouded Leopard" vehicles. The operation concluded with full bridge clearance and spot checks.

Taiwan
's Ministry of National Defence emphasised that the drill is part of a broader campaign to strengthen
urban warfare
readiness and prevent enemy advances toward critical government and infrastructure hubs like the Presidential Office Building.
Tuesday marked the seventh day of Taiwan's longest-ever live-fire phase of the Han Kuang exercises, which run through July 18. This year's extended duration, double that of previous drills, underscores Taiwan's growing sense of urgency amid China's escalating military coercion.
The bridge drill served as both training and deterrent, a reminder to Beijing that Taiwan's defences are vigilant, resilient, and prepared to fight for their freedom.

SC okays axing 95 trees for GMLR, seeks expert report
New Delhi: Supreme Court on Tuesday gave in-principle clearance for cutting 95 trees in Film City in order to take tunnel boring machines underground to carve out 6.6km twin tunnels for Goregaon-Mulund Link Road as part of an east-west connectivity project, which includes Santacruz-Chembur, Andheri-Ghatkopar and Jogeshwari-Vikhroli link roads. It, however, said no trees must be cut without the court approving the compensatory afforestation plan. It sought the report of the experts who approved the particular alignment requiring the axing of 95 trees and asked whether any alternative route was taken into consideration. As BMC, through senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, sought nod for cutting down the trees in Film City, adjacent to Aarey's forests, senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan opposed it, alleging serious procedural irregularities. "Similar oppositions were made when coastal road and Atal Setu were being proposed to be constructed. Look at them now. They have really helped Mumbaikars travel from one end to the other with relative ease," the CJI said. He said he is a frequent visitor to Mumbai, and knows the ground realities of its traffic situation and how it has been eased by the three east-west link roads, along with coastal road and Atal Setu.

Rights activists flag torture of Bengali migrants in BJP-run states
1 2 Kolkata: Rights activists expressed concern over incidents of harassment and torture of migrant workers from Bengal in BJP-governed states. At an event organised by Sangbidhan Bachao Desh Bachao Manch in Kolkata on Tuesday, activists Harsh Mander and Nadeem Khan highlighted reports of illegal detention, police abuse and discrimination against Bengali-speaking migrant workers. Harsh Mander said many Bengali-speaking workers were being detained and tortured by police in Haryana's Gurgaon, Rajasthan's Jaipur, Gujarat's Ahmedabad and pockets of Odisha. "Our Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to move anywhere within the country and earn a livelihood. But there are forces, including BJP and RSS, who disregard the Constitution," said Mander. "While BJP seeks Bengali votes in Bengal, it is torturing them in states where it holds power." Rights activist Nadeem Khan, co-founder of Association for Protection of Civil Rights, who had earlier visited affected areas in Gurgaon, Jaipur and Ahmedabad, called for stronger intervention from the Bengal govt. "These workers are mostly uneducated and struggle to support their families. Masiur Rahman, state president of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, said the state govt should create a dedicated department with nodal officers to register migrant workers from Bengal in other states to ensure their safety and protection of their rights. The Bengal govt has already started a helpline for migrant workers facing harassment in other states to help them return.
