Every home baker has a favourite recipe for muffins, cookies and brownies.
Yet the cakes produced by Nahla Mahmoud are all made with a special ingredient that is definitely not found in most kitchen cupboards.
For the 38-year-old has set up the first business of its kind in Scotland, baking sweet treats from ground-up insects.
And while she acknowledges not everyone will find crickets and mealworms appetising, she hopes to convince people of the benefits and pleasures of putting insects on the menu.
At the moment, her business, the Insect Cafe, sells its products online and at food festivals and farmers' markets.
However, she is now finalising plans for a bricks-and-mortar café in Edinburgh where diners can tuck in to cricket and almond brownies and orange and mealworm muffins.
Other succulent treats available include banana and coconut larva balls and mixed insect ginger cookies.
Savoury items include garlic and herb roasted crickets and spicy peri-peri mealworms.
Ms Mahmoud said: 'There are some people who just love to cook with, and experiment with, new ingredients – and they're usually very excited to try our goods.
'And, of course, there are also people who are simply very uncomfortable with eating insects. It's just not for them. After thinking about it a bit, though, they warm to the idea and are open to trying them.'
The Insect Café buys specially reared insects from farms in England, then processes them in a commercial kitchen in Edinburgh.
Ms Mahmoud, a qualified zoologist and ecologist, said the insects are ground up to make flour.
She added: 'So essentially, although you're eating a cake made out of crickets or mealworms or whatever the insect is, the taste is exactly the same – it just tastes like a cake!'

Black Sabbath at Villa Park review — moving reunion as Ozzy rocks out

Never mind those over-hyped Oasis gigs, there was only one truly historic rock comeback show over the weekend as Birmingham's Villa Park football stadium hosted Back to the Beginning, an all-star heavy rock gathering that reunited the full original line-up of the local heroes Black Sabbath for the first time in 20 years, and the last time ever. This sold-out, all-day charity benefit event was essentially the retirement party for the band's 76-year-old singer and international treasure Ozzy Osbourne, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2019, and now has limited mobility. It is no exaggeration to call Black Sabbath the Beatles of heavy metal, their hugely influential legacy reflected in the multigenerational cast list of superstar head-bangers who came to pay tribute at Villa Park, all working for free. Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Anthrax, Slayer, Alice in Chains and many others performed short sets of about 20 to 30 minutes, each including at least one Sabbath or Ozzy song. • The best concerts in London and the UK to book in 2025 Not every set was a killer, but credit is due to Lzzy Hale of Halestorm, the only woman on the bill, for rocking harder than most of her male peers. Metallica were also reliably propulsive, exhilarating and adrenalised. 'Thank you Black Sabbath,' growled James Hetfield, 'for giving us a purpose in life'. Between the main bands, a fluid supergroup featuring members of Judas Priest, Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers and more also played, joined by surprise guests including the Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood and the rising pop-rock star Yungblud, who brought high-energy swagger to his reworking of Sabbath's 1972 power ballad Changes. The Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello served as musical director for the whole event, and gave a few shredding performances himself, pairing up with Aerosmith's Steven Tyler for riotously funky versions of Walk This Way and Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love. The Villa Park video screens also aired fond video tributes to Ozzy and Sabbath from famous well-wishers, including Sir Elton John, Dolly Parton and Jack Black. Black Sabbath have survived multiple splits, temporary reunions and premature retirements over their six-decade career. They last played in Birmingham with two huge 'farewell' shows in 2017, but Back to the Beginning inevitably had a more concrete air of finality, given Ozzy's health issues. Even so, the singer seemed in pretty fine voice when he finally appeared on stage to huge cheers, performing two short sets from a black leather armchair adorned with skulls and bat wings. Even a fallen emperor needs a throne. Ozzy opened with five songs from his post-Sabbath solo career, including a gothically camp Mr Crowley and the rollicking audience sing-along Crazy Train. After a short break, he reappeared with his Sabbath co-founders: the guitarist Tony Iommi, the bass player Terence 'Geezer' Butler and the drummer Bill Ward. There was a palpable sense of hatchets being buried and rifts healed at Villa Park, with Ward back in the fold after his acrimonious exclusion from previous tours. Sabbath's four-song set was all too brief, but still a pleasing reminder that seminal classics such as Paranoid, War Pigs and Iron Man retain their potent fusion of jazz, blues, funk, proto-punk aggression and doomy occult imagery.

Love Island's Casa Amor hunks set their sights on newly-single Shakira after Harry's brutal U-turn to pair up with 'snake' Helena as they prepare to cause chaos in show's iconic twist

Love Island's iconic Casa Amor twist is finally set to kick off on Sunday, and this year's hunky male bombshells have been revealed. In a series first, not one couple have declared themselves closed off after four weeks of tears, twists and drama, meaning it's all to play for as the boys head prepare to turn the girls' heads. As they make their way into the main villa, it seems that many have set their sights on a newly-single Shakira, after Harry decided to U-turn and recouple with Helena. It was a move that sparked fury among fans, as Helena gushed to Meg she was 'back,' while an upset Shakira was consoled by her pal Toni. It seems that Shakira will have men lining up to date her, with the first hunk revealed as Chris, 29, a commercial real estate manager from Manchester. He said: 'I'm physically most interested in Shakira, she's had a bit of a rough time so I think I could go in and make a difference for her. 'I like Emily and Yasmin as well, Yasmin has quite an interesting personality, we'd be quite funny together. Emily is very attractive and seems to be very sweet personality wise.' Sharing his game plan to land himself a partner, he added: 'I'm feeling very excited to get involved, there's been a lot of drama in that villa. It feels like it's all to play for! 'I'm looking forward to having time and space to make connections with people, without distractions.' Up next is Ty, 23, a site engineer from Barnsley, who said he might be the man to finally tame Helena's wild ways. He said: ' I've got my eyes on Shakira - she needs a Northern lad in there, our personalities would be the most matched I think. 'Emily seems like a really sweet girl, someone you could take home to your parents. Helena is really good looking but she needs taming! I reckon I'm the man for the job.' For Martin, 23, a graduate from London, he hopes to be the man who can reassure Shakira after she'd been 'messed about' by Harry in the villa. He said: 'I've got my eyes on Shakira, I've had my eyes on her from the start. For her to blossom, she needs someone who knows what they're doing, not someone who is messing her around. 'I like that she's after emotional intelligence and stimulating conversation. I think Yasmin is hilarious, she's got a fiery personality, outgoing, I like how she says what she wants, when she wants…and she has great posture!' For Jamie, 26, an electric engineer from Barking, there are three particular beauties who have caught his eye: 'Yasmin, Shakira and Toni.' Up next is Cach, 24, a dancer from east London, who admitted he feels some couples have played it 'too safe' in the villa. He said: 'Everyone is being a bit safe and settling with what's in front of them. Harry is doing it in the right way which is why he's getting into a lot of trouble!' Rounding out this year's Casa Amor bombshells is Boris, 28, a model who is originally from Ljubljana, but now lives in Dubai. He said: 'I'm super attracted to Shakira, I think she's got a great personality and seems like a good girl. 'I'm sure we'd get along well and have a good time together, but I need to see in person, it's all about energy.' Shakira finally called things off with Harry after he snuck off for a chat with his ex and plotted how to rekindle things without telling his current partner. Shakira was left devastated by the turn of events and cooled things off with Harry, and he wasted no time in cracking on with Helena, 29, again. They both excitedly declared 'we're back' just moments after the break-up, and the next day, snuck off to the Hideaway together. Harry and Helena packed on the PDA as they enjoyed a dip in the hot tub, putting on a very amorous display as they proved their romance was back on track. In a surprise recoupling, Harry then picked Helena and made a very gushing speech about his affections, despite spending days denying their connection to Shakira. He said: 'There is something undeniable, which I'm starting to believe. We seem to have found our way back to each other, as we always do.' Shakira then ended up back in a couple with her ex Ben Holbrough, who left the Islanders open-mouthed with his awkward speech. 'I'm just going to have to choose one,' he said of the remaining girls - referencing his lack of a romantic spark in the villa as his fellow Islanders looked stunned. However, after the dramatic Casa Amor twist, it remains to be seen whether the arrival of Harry's ex-girlfriend will test his affections towards Helena, as it's been revealed she will be one of the new girls waiting for the boys in the other villa. Emma wastes no time in lambasting Harry for his behaviour, branding both him and Helena 'snakes.' Love Island continues on Monday at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.

SPICE Girl Mel B will follow her dream St Paul's Cathedral wedding with a second ceremony this summer. Singer Mel, 50, and new hubby Rory McPhee will travel abroad for the bash — which she says will be 'more informal, sexy and beautiful'. 6 6 And she has already bought a dress for it. She said: 'In one incredible afternoon I found two perfect dresses. 'One beautiful classic dress by Josephine Scott, a British designer, and one stunning dramatic dress by a US designer, Justin Alexander.' The second ceremony will be another chance for Mel's Spice Girl pals to attend, as only Baby Spice Emma Bunton was able to make Saturday's service in central London. However, Ginger Spice Geri Horner has yet to comment. Yesterday Mel, whose full name is Melanie Brown, posted pictures from the day on Instagram. One showed her with Scottish hairdresser Rory, 37, on the steps of the cathedral in her Josephine Scott dress. Another showed her wearing her wedding gown and veil — and a cardigan with 'just married' embroidered on the back. Mel B's hen do celebrations 6 6 6 6
