Bridal bucket is the best wedding gift

The Guardian26-05-2025
Re wedding lists (The toilet roll wedding list – is this the least romantic gift request ever?, 20 May), when my parents announced their engagement in 1951, one of my mother's sisters, then on a low wage, bought a bucket. Each week on payday, she added some household item to it – a scrubbing brush, a mop, a floor cloth, shoe polish and brushes, cleaning products. It was the most useful wedding gift they received, according to my mother. Cliodhna Dempsey Bereldange, Luxembourg
'We have created incentives to try to retain our most precious resource, which is our management team,' the chair of Thames Water is quoted as saying in your article (23 May). I would suggest their most precious resource is clean water. Their management is pretty inept if they don't realise people reckon their track record warrants no bonus. If anything, they should be paying fines for the leaks.Catherine DunnSt Andrews, Fife
I wholeheartedly agree with Lucy Mangan in her defence of the semicolon (Digested week, 23 May); however, I note with regret that she has not seen fit to use this valuable punctuation mark in her column.Paul CopasBrentwood, Essex
At school in the 1950s, we were told that, if in doubt, we should read a sentence aloud and if a pause sounded right with a count to one, a comma was required, two – a semicolon, and three – a colon. It seemed to work.Marilyn RowleyDidsbury, Manchester
Stand by for balaclavas becoming ubiquitous fashion wear (Live facial recognition cameras may become 'commonplace' as police use soars, 24 May).Colin Prower Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire
'Artificial intelligence to play increasing role in armed forces, says defence secretary' (20 May). Could this be one small step on the road to the dystopia envisioned by the Terminator franchise?Tony RimmerLytham St Annes, Lancashire

Tankers brought in to help 'keep taps flowing' in Surrey

Tankers have been brought in to "help keep taps flowing" for customers in a part of Surrey, a water company has said. Thames Water said hot weather and high demand were presenting "challenges" in maintaining water supplies in south Guildford. It urged people in the area to conserve water wherever possible, such as by taking shorter showers or turning off the tap while brushing their teeth. "Our teams continue to work around the clock in the heat to deliver high-quality drinking water to our customers' taps," Thames Water said in a statement. "Fortunately, our water resources remain in a reasonably healthy state," it added. The South East has experienced scorching temperatures this week, with Tuesday confirmed by the BBC Weather Centre as the hottest day of the year so far. The supply issues come as the beleaguered water company, which hiked bills for customers earlier this year, faces continued heavy criticism over its performance. In May, Thames Water was fined £122.7m for breaching rules over sewage spills and shareholder payouts - the biggest penalty ever issued by water industry regulator with £20bn in debt, it serves about a quarter of the UK's population, mostly across London and parts of southern England.

Thousands on benefits including Universal Credit are missing out on help with key bill

THOUSANDS on benefits, including Universal Credit, are missing out on help with a key bill. Council tax i s an annual fee you pay to your local council. The cost is set by your council and goes towards funding local services. 1 That means the amount you pay varies depending on where you live. You usually have to pay the charge if you own or rent your home. But if you claim certain benefits, such as Universal Credit, you could be entitled to a discount on the amount you pay. The support is given out by local councils in England, so how much you get will depend on where you live, your income, dependants and other benefits. You can find out if you're eligible by visiting To use the tool, you will need to enter your postcode and it will redirect you to your local council's website where you can find out more. How much you get will also depend on what band you are in. The bands range from A to H, with A homes paying the least and H the most. For example, households in Leeds can apply for a Council Tax Support if they claim Universal Credit or Carers Allowance. In Manchester, you can claim council tax support when you apply for Universal Credit. If you are already receiving council tax support but are due to be moved across to Universal Credit it is important to tell the council. The government is in the process of moving people on older benefits, like tax credits and income-based ESA, to the newer Universal Credit system. You may have received a migration notice in the form of a letter. As soon as you get this, write to your local council to ensure your support continues. Charities such as Shelter have information online about how to structure the letter. You can find out more by visiting, What other Council Tax Support is available? If you're not receiving benefits or don't qualify for your local authority's low-income council tax support scheme, you may still be eligible for help. Pensioners may also be able to get a council tax discount if they receive certain benefits. Those on the guarantee credit element of pension credit could get up to 100% off their bill. If you do not get guaranteed credit but have a low income and less than £16,000 in savings then you may still get some help. Meanwhile, if you are a pensioner who lives alone then you will qualify for a 25% discount. Elsewhere, you could get a 25% council tax reduction if you live on your own or if others at home are classed as "disregarded". For example, if a single adult lives with a severely mentally impaired person then they can get 25% off their council tax. Meanwhile, if you live in an all-student household then you do not need to pay any council tax. How to check how much council tax you pay BEFORE you cut your bill it is important to know how much you pay in council tax each year. You can find your council tax band on for homes in England and Wales. If you live in Scotland then you can check on the Scottish Assessors website. You will need to enter your postcode and scroll through the listed addresses to find yours. Local councils must contact you directly every time your bill is set to go up or down. They should do this via letter or email. You can find out which local council is yours on the website.

Hived raises $42m to roll out its electric delivery trucks

An ecommerce logistics firm set up by a former Manchester City women's youth team captain has raised $42 million from Japanese-backed investors to expand its all-electric fleet across southern England. Murvah Iqbal, co-founder and chief executive of Hived, said they would use the cash to begin taking their services to cities such as Bristol, Bath and Brighton from September, with the aim to then expand to Birmingham and Manchester in the second half of next year. Hived has delivered more than 6.5 million parcels across London using its 250 couriers for the likes of John Lewis, Uniqlo and Zara since its launch in 2021. It has developed its own parcel-tracking software to improve the performance of the couriers delivering the parcels to 99 per cent on-time, and says it reduces customer inquiries about the timing of deliveries and slashes the rate of claims for failed deliveries or damaged goods.
