Canada Day 2025: Your guide to what's happening in the Halifax area

The Halifax Regional Municipality is hosting numerous events and concerts across the city to celebrate Canada Day.
Admission is free on Canada Day at the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, Museum of Natural History and Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.
The Halifax Commons will host a Family Day from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. with children's games and bouncy castles.
The Canada Day fireworks will take place from 10 to 10:30 p.m., weather permitting. Fireworks can be seen from most locations along the Halifax and Dartmouth waterfronts.
All Cineplex theatres are open.
Recreation
Municipally operated outdoor pools, as well as supervised municipal beaches, will be open.
The Bayers-Westwood, George Dixon, Isleville Street, Cole Harbour, Shirley's, Westmount and Sackville splash pads are open for the 2025 season.
The Emera Oval will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Equipment lending will be available if weather and surface conditions permit.
Gateway Meat Market: Open from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Pete's Frootique: Closed.
Sobeys: Closed.
Atlantic Superstore: Closed.
Costco: Closed.
Walmart: Closed.
Drugstores: Some pharmacies are open but have limited hours.
Liquor and beer
NSLC: Closed, but local agency stores may be open.
Some independent alcohol retailers will be open, as well as craft breweries and other alcohol producers.
Malls
The following malls are closed on Canada Day:
Halifax Shopping Centre.
Mic Mac Mall.
Sunnyside Mall.
Bedford Place Mall.
Park Lane Mall.
Halifax Public Libraries
All branches are closed.
Transit
Halifax Transit buses and the Alderney ferry service will be operating on its reduced-service holiday schedule. The Alderney Ferry will be free on Canada Day.
The Woodside ferry will not be operating.
On-street parking is free Tuesday.
Waste collection
There will be no garbage, organics or recyclables collection on Tuesday.
Collection scheduled for that day was moved ahead to Saturday, June 28.
Banks
All banks are closed on Canada Day.
311 call centres
The 311 contact centre will be closed Tuesday for full service. However, urgent calls can still be reported. Regular operations will resume Wednesday.
In-person customer service centres will be closed Tuesday. They'll reopen with regular hours on Wednesday.

San Jose July 4th organizers scramble after blast leads to canceled fireworks show
The explosion at the fireworks warehouse in Yolo County caused the cancelation of a number of 4th of July fireworks shows, including one in San Jose. Up to 40,000 people were expected to be around Lake Cunningham on Friday night for a festival and fireworks show, but now it might just be a festival. That's because finding another pyrotechnic company this close to the holiday is basically impossible. "You see that. That's the beach where we usually launch out of," said Councilmember Domingo Candelas. He organized the 4th of July event specifically to get people to come to a legal fireworks show versus shooting off their illegal ones in the neighborhoods. CBS "People just want a safe avenue to celebrate the 4th of July. We're doing what we can figure out something, especially for the community, something that's unique," said Candelas. Now, he and others are scrambling to figure out a backup plan, especially since the 4th of July is like the Super Bowl for pyrotechnic companies. Planning starts 6 to 8 months in advance. "It is all consuming for us. It takes hundreds of people thousands of hours to prepare and execute the 4th of July week," says Pat Dyas of Pyro Spectaculars. Dyas is a show producer for the company doing the fireworks at the Marin County Fair and also the 4th of July fireworks in Concord. He is not connected to the Lake Cunningham show, but said his company has fielded calls from other cities who are scrambling for last-minute alternatives. Along with San Jose, communities that have already announced cancellations connected to Tuesday's blast include Chico, Cloverdale, Lodi, Marysville and Placerville. "It's pretty much impossible to pull a fireworks show out of your back pocket. It's not like DoorDash where you can have it show up," says Dyas. It's disappointing news for folks planning to watch the show. "We live on the hillside on the east side. And every year we get the perfect view for the 4th of July and we always look forward to the fireworks every year," says Quang Nguyen who lives near the lake. Candelas said they're looking at all kinds of alternatives, but options are limited at the last minute. "Even the drone vendors, it's all these different folks, not just cities, but you have places like Great America, you know and hopefully we have some good news in the next couple days, but either way we'll have a big party here on the 4th of July," he says. Candelas says there will still be 18 food trucks, a live band, and tons of activities for the kids. One drone vendor is available to put on a show, but because the park is near an airport, they have to get approval from the FAA to do the show. For die-hard fireworks fans in the South Bay, Great America in Santa Clara is still doing fireworks on Friday night and so are the San Jose Giants at Municipal Stadium. Head-on crash kills Royal Canoe bassist, partner in western Manitoba on Canada Day
The bassist in Winnipeg indie-pop band Royal Canoe and his partner died on Canada Day after the vehicle they were in was struck along a highway in western Manitoba, RCMP say. Brendan Berg and his partner, Olivia Michalczuk, died Tuesday, Royal Canoe said in a statement on Instagram. Berg would have turned 43 Wednesday, the band said. Michalczuk was 31. "We are all in a state of shock trying to process this tragic news. Brendan was the kindest, sweetest man you could ever know, and his passing has left an enormous and sudden hole in the lives of everyone who knew him," the band stated on Instagram. In a statement, Manitoba RCMP said they responded to a head-on collision at about 3:30 p.m. on Canada Day on Highway 10, about three kilometres north of Bowsman, a community north of Duck Mountain Provincial Park. The site of the accident was approximately 280 kilometres northwest of Brandon. The two vehicles were in a ditch and one was overturned when police got there. Paramedics and firefighters were helping the occupants of the cars, the RCMP stated. Investigators believe one of the vehicles was headed south on Highway 10 when it veered over the centre line and crashed into a parked vehicle sitting on the eastern edge of the highway, causing it to roll into the ditch, RCMP stated. Berg and Michalczuk were in the vehicle that rolled over. They were both taken to hospital and later succumbed to their injuries, the Mounties said. The driver of the other vehicle, a 36-year-old Winnipeg man, and a 29-year-old passenger from Swan River were both taken to hospital with critical injuries. RCMP continue to investigate the crash. Royal Canoe said in its statement Berg's positivity and considerate nature stabilized the band during 15 years of touring and recording. "He was always the first to volunteer his time to pick up the trailer from the shop our load gear out after tour," the band said. "His generosity and selflessness were legendary."

The best things to do in D.C. this weekend and next week
This week is all about Beyoncé and Independence Day.
