Issey Miyake transforms the Cartier Foundation into living sculpture garden with light and movement

PARIS (AP) — As Paris wilted under the ruthless June sun, Issey Miyake sent out a battalion of intergalactic fashion soldiers at the Cartier Foundation Thursday, shimmering between art and menswear apparel in a spectacle where even the light was a player. The late-morning sun bounced sharply off the art museum's monumental steel pillars, forcing some guests to slide their seats to escape the dazzling reflections — an impromptu game of musical chairs set to a pulsing, kinetic soundtrack.
This
Paris Fashion Week
season finds the Miyake house in the midst of transition. In January, Paris bid adieu to Homme Plissé — Miyake's pleated cult favorite that had anchored the city's menswear calendar since 2019 — as the brand shifted its focus to nomadic shows, most recently appearing under the Tuscan sun. The torch in Paris has now been passed to IM Men, the last line personally conceived by Issey Miyake before his death in 2022. Thursday's show marked IM Men's return to the Paris stage, under the direction of designers Sen Kawahara, Yuki Itakura, and Nobutaka Kobayashi.
A kinetic dance of light and fabric
The theme, 'Dancing Texture,' nodded to the ceramic artistry of Shoji Kamoda, but also to the surreal choreography on display. Models appeared to roll, tilt, and swing through the light, their movements somewhere between ballet and a slow-motion video game. Occasionally, a guest would squint, unsure if they were watching a runway show or a heat-induced hallucination.
The crowd — equal parts Parisian cool, visiting editors, and those for whom a pleated culotte is a spiritual calling — dodged the sun's glare and fanned themselves in the heat, shifting for both comfort and the best sightline. The first model glided out in a mad, angular hat, setting the tone for a parade of tin man-meets-space ninja silhouettes designed for dance floors or distant planets.
The clothes themselves looked as if they had been engineered for a new climate — or perhaps a new species. Surfaces peeled, rippled, and shimmered, metallic foils flashed against the sun, and jacquard weaves evoked the carved waves of Kamoda's ceramics. Vermilion and white motifs burst forth alongside a near-neon green, courtesy of upcycled fishing nets. A coat unzipped into a dramatic collar while some blousons and pants, when laid flat, formed perfect circles — a wink at Kamoda's wheel-thrown plates.
Miyake's restless legacy, risk and reinvention
Miyake, who died in 2022
, loomed large over the collection, his vision unmistakable in every engineered pleat and playful transformation. IM Men is the last line he conceived — a living laboratory for innovation, risk, and occasional absurdity, now energetically interpreted by a younger team. Even in his absence, his legacy is alive in every joke, fold, and jolt of surprise on the runway.
Born in Hiroshima in 1938, Miyake rose from postwar Japan to become a global force, transforming fashion in the 1980s and '90s with his radical, sculptural vision. He pioneered heat-set pleating and created lines like Pleats Please and A-POC that blurred the boundaries between art, science, and daily life. Miyake's designs liberated fabric, allowing it to move with the body and imagination alike.
Of course, the fashion house's embrace of the avant-garde still courts danger. Thursday's spectacle occasionally veered into excess, with kinetic art and sci-fi headgear that threatened to upstage the clothes themselves — a familiar Miyake risk. But the best moments, like a pared-back tangerine overcoat that floated past, proved restraint can sometimes steal the show.

BBC says it should have pulled livestream of rap group Bob Vylan's act over 'antisemitic' chants

LONDON (AP) — The BBC said Monday it should have pulled a livestream of rap group Bob Vylan's performance at Glastonbury Festival over 'antisemitic' chants against Israeli troops. The British broadcaster has come under heavy criticism for broadcasting the rap punk duo's performance Saturday, when rapper Bobby Vylan led crowds attending the U.K.'s largest summer music festival in chants of 'free, free Palestine' and 'death, death to the IDF,' the Israel Defense Forces. The BBC said Monday that it 'respects freedom of expression but stands firmly against incitement to violence.' 'The antisemitic sentiments expressed by Bob Vylan were utterly unacceptable and have no place on our airwaves,' it said. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the chants, saying there was no excuse for such 'appalling hate speech.' 'The BBC needs to explain how these scenes came to be broadcast,' Starmer said. Ofcom, the broadcasting regulator, also said it was 'very concerned' about the BBC livestream and said the broadcaster 'clearly has questions to answer.' The BBC said earlier in its defense that it had issued a warning on screen about 'very strong and discriminatory language' during the livestream. Bob Vylan, who formed in 2017, have released four albums addressing issues to do with racism, masculinity and class. Its two members both keep their real names secret for privacy reasons. In a statement posted on social media, Bobby Vylan said: 'Teaching our children to speak up for the change they want and need is the only way that we make this world a better place." More than 6,000 people have been killed and more than 20,000 injured in Gaza since a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas collapsed in March. Since the war began in October 2023 with a Hamas attack on Israel, Israeli attacks have killed more than 56,000 people and injured 132,000, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. It doesn't distinguish between civilians and combatants, but has said that women and children make up more than half the 56,000 dead. Israel says it only targets militants and blames civilian deaths on Hamas, accusing the militants of hiding among civilians, because they operate in populated areas.

Denver zoo closes early over the weekend to prevent wild teens from pulling off TikTok-inspired ‘takeover' trend

The Denver Zoo closed early on Saturday ahead of a planned teen 'takeover' of the park that went viral on TikTok as part of an alarming trend among youths that is wreaking havoc in public spaces across the country. Zoo staff decided to shutter the park to prevent the so-called 'takeover' before it could happen. They weren't entirely sure what the coup they put a stop to would've looked like, but knew they didn't want to see a repeat of others that have cropped up around the country this summer. AP 'We don't know the exact nature of the event, but we know previous events organized in a similar fashion have led to some disruption to local businesses, damage, vandalism, things like that,' zoo spokesperson Jake Kubie told KUSA. 'We don't believe we're a target of anything. We haven't received any information that suggests that there is gonna be any impact to us. We're always leaning towards caution over everything else.' Advertisement Last weekend, one of the planned events took Denver's Northfield Mall by storm as more than 300 unruly teenagers descended onto the property and started fighting each other following a call-out to meet at the shopping center on TikTok. Following the early closure, zoo staff were still on high alert, but no one showed. Still, other community advocates and police spent the rest of their Saturday afternoon patrolling around Denver's City Park in the sweltering heat just to be extra cautious. In just one week, two separate TikTok-fueled pop-ups spurred hundreds of teens to shut down a mall and a carnival that were mere miles apart. In Edison, New Jersey, more than 300 youth turned the Menlo Park Mall into their personal playground, forcing innocent shoppers to take shelter inside stores as fights started breaking out. The following week, another takeover destroyed a carnival in a mall parking lot just 2.5 short miles away from the Edison site. The carnival had tried to impose an 18-and-up limit for after-hours, but the teenagers weren't having it and started scaling fences to get inside.
