Lawrence Shankland was not ready to bring Hearts career to an end

Leader Live03-07-2025
The 29-year-old Scotland forward – who has scored 68 goals since arriving from Belgian side Beerschot in 2022 – looked to be on his way out of Tynecastle after several rounds of negotiations over the past 18 months failed to result in a contract extension.
After becoming a free agent this summer and exploring his options, however, Shankland has been persuaded by recently-installed manager Derek McInnes to accept an offer to become the club's highest-paid player.
The Jambos announced on Thursday afternoon that he has agreed a deal until 2028, bringing to an end a long-running contract saga.
'After speaking to the family and where they want to be, especially my four-year-old diva, who's in love with Jock the Jambo, it was back here."

'I had a couple of weeks at the end of the season on holiday and to get married, and then after that, I gave it a month to think about things and weigh up options,' Shankland said in an official club interview at their training base in Spain.
'I had a couple that popped up, but the family side of things just wasn't right for me. And in the meantime, I'd been speaking to the manager about coming back here. I'd always left the door open. I couldn't seem to close the door behind me, and I think that gave me an indication of where my head might be at.
'After speaking to the family and where they want to be, especially my four-year-old Eva, who's in love with Jock the Jambo (Hearts' mascot), it was back here. I'm happy with my decision and the family are happy as well.'
In his first campaign at the club Shankland became the first Hearts player in 31 years to score more than 20 goals in a season and then netted 31 goals in 2023-24 to earn himself every Scottish Premiership Player of the Year award available and secure a place in the Scotland squad for Euro 2024.
The former Ayr and Dundee United forward's most recent campaign was more of a struggle in front of goal, although he did notch five times in his final five appearances to leave supporters clinging to the hope that he might decide to remain at Tynecastle.
After being appointed in mid-May, McInnes made it a priority to retain Shankland and the forward was grateful to his new manager for allowing him time to make up his mind.
'As long as I was honest in my situation, I think both sides were happy to kind of see how things went,' said Shankland.
'I was always keen to keep that door open for myself, and it was important for me that the manager was happy to do that for me as well. When he came in the door, my contract was coming to an end and he understood where I was at as well, so that was important. And the honesty between us kind of worked out in the end.'
The retention of their most prolific forward of the 21st century represents a significant coup for Hearts at a time when they are embarking on an exciting new era in partnership with Jamestown Analytics and with Brighton owner Tony Bloom on board as a minority investor.
'Lawrence is a really popular boy, but he's still got so much to do here,' said McInnes. 'We want to be lifting silverware. We want to be going into group stages in Europe and we want to have a consistent thing going here. Having Lawrence in the building gives us a better chance of achieving all that.'

Former Hearts and Derby County star in surprise non league transfer as he makes summer move

A former Hearts star has signed for a non-league club as the ex Derby County and QPR man goes down a different career direction. The Jambos have been one of Scotland's busiest clubs in the transfer market. There are former players on the move too and one of them has taken a major decision after an exit from Derby County at the end of last season. Conor Washington started his career in the lower leagues at St Ives before moving up the leagues down south. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He featured for the likes of QPR before a short lived stint at Sheffield United preceded playing with Hearts. Washington played 22 times for Hearts between 2019-2020 before heading back south, and left Derby County earlier this summer. He now signs for Matlock Town, who are currently part of the Northern Premier League Division One East. Why former Hearts, Derby County and QPR star has signed in non league Taking to social media, the striker said: 'An emotional day as I drop out of full time football and back into the part time scene where it all began. From Step 5 to Step 4 in 13 years , with some other stuff inbetween. In my wildest dreams I couldn't have imagined the career I've managed to have and I'm grateful for every single memory. From never setting foot in an academy, turning pro at 19 in the Conference in 2012 to lacing them up against Germany in Euro 2016 - seems like a fairy tale. 'Three promotions , a relegation and some amazing clubs along the way. The setbacks , my god there was plenty, but I wouldn't have it any other way ! Really looking forward to combining playing for a really ambitious club and starting the next chapter of my football career.' A club statement adds, with reference to time at Hearts: 'Matlock Town are pleased to announce the signing of Northern Ireland International forward Conor Washington, formerly of Derby County. Kent-born Washington netted seven times in League Two for Newport County in the first half of the 2013/14 campaign before sealing a move to League One with Peterborough United. He went on to score on a further five occasions during a campaign that ultimately ended in play-off defeat. Tallies of 13 and 15 followed over the next two seasons, including a first-ever career hat-trick during 2015/16, taking the striker to 33 goals in 94 games for the Posh.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Why non league side have signed Conor Washington They add: 'His fine form saw him earn a seven-figure switch to Queens Park Rangers of the Championship in January 2016 and Washington scored 14 times in 98 appearances before joining Sheffield United for the 2018/19 campaign where he played a part in the Blades earning promotion to the Premier League. The 2019/20 season was spent with Heart of Midlothian in Scotland. 'However, the COVID-19 outbreak ended the campaign prematurely. Washington returned to England with League One outfit Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2020 and scored 11 times in each of the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons for the Addicks. This form earned him a move back to the Championship with Rotherham, where he found the net six times. Washington would make the move to Derby County for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2023, where he would spend two seasons before departing at the end of his deal this summer. 'On the international stage, Washington has been a regular in the Northern Ireland squad for many years, scoring six times in 43 appearances. Now back fully fit and hungry to get back in the goals, we are excited to welcome Conor to the Gladiators and look forward to seeing him at the Proctor Cars Stadium.'

World Cup aim for Hearts striker James Wilson as he discusses targets, tap-ins and timing

FIFA tournament in USA, Canada and Mexico is on the teen's radar Sign up to our Hearts newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! Now 18, the Hearts striker is one of this country's most prodigious talents with the potential to reach the pinnacle of his chosen sport. For any footballer, that is the aforementioned greatest show on Earth. It's been a long time since France 98 as Scotland look to finally qualify for next summer's finals in the USA, Canada and Mexico. National coach Steve Clarke carries an established core of experienced players, including Liverpool's Andy Robertson, Napoli's Scott McTominay and the Aston Villa captain John McGinn. Wilson holds one senior cap after becoming the youngest internationalist in Scottish history in March. He was also called up for June's friendlies so is clearly in the manager's thoughts. He knows season 2025/26 carries huge significance as he looks to produce the club form to earn a seat on Scotland's World Cup plane. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'It was nice to be called up again in the summer,' said Wilson. 'I was a bit disappointed not to get any minutes, but we know we've got a World Cup to try and reach next summer. Hopefully I can kick on this season and get myself in contention for that. Steve said just to keep working hard and keep doing what I'm doing. When I look back at where I was this time last season, I'd only played three first-team games. I hadn't really broken through at all and was playing B team football. If you'd told me this time last year I'd be where I am now, I'd be over the moon.' The youngster scored six goals in 32 Hearts appearances last season. He wants a significant improvement on that ratio this term and already has two goals from two games in the Premier Sports Cup. The motivation to impress new Hearts head coach Derek McInnes is obvious. 'Hopefully I can score a goal a game. Then there's the World Cup at the end of the year, so hopefully I could be involved in that,' said Wilson. 'You always want to start well and gain confidence from that. I'm definitely happy to start this season with some goals. 'When you come into pre-season and there are new faces, you want to give the best first impression you can. That's the way I'm looking at it and I think I've done that. When I was with Scotland, the new manager did give me a call. He gave me a few extra days off, to be fair! He said he was looking forward to working with me. It's given me a lot of confidence, him showing the trust in me to play the first two games. If you feel good, you'll play well and it's nice to have that backing.' It's also nice to see Lawrence Shankland - another Hearts player who will have World Cup aspirations - staying at Tynecastle after protracted contract negotiations. 'Yeah, 100 per cent,' agreed Wilson. 'To learn off him and play with him, I think he's one of the best players in the Scottish Premiership. To be able to play with him and learn from him is really good for me. I honestly had no idea [what was going to happen]. He had his reasons and I didn't really want to get involved. I'm just happy he's still here.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Scotland debut and new strike partners at Hearts Wilson is now an established member of the first-team dressing room at Riccarton. 'I actually made my Scotland debut before I even got in the dressing room. It was nice to get in, see the boys more and try to be in and around it.' He has partnered Shankland, Claudio Braga and Elton Kabangu in Hearts' first two Premier Sports Cup ties as they beat Dunfermline 4-1 and Hamilton 4-0. The variety has its advantages, although McInnes may well settle on two of the four for league matches. 'It's really nice to play with all of these players, and everyone has come in and scored in these first few games,' Wilson pointed out. 'The competition is tough and it's nice to have played both games so far. I've been playing slightly deeper, which is different for me, but it's nice to just be on the pitch. Elton was playing slightly higher than me against Hamilton, which gave me the freedom to float about a bit more and drop in. I gave away the ball a bit more, to be fair! When I came through the academy at Hearts, that's the position I used to play a bit more. I had that freedom role where I could come short and I do enjoy that.' His goals have nonetheless demonstrated a poacher's instinct with impeccable timing inside the penalty area. 'Everyone says that. I'm a tap-in merchant,' smiled Wilson. 'Look, they're the goals as a striker you love to score. You can get so many goals a season just from being in that position. So I'm going to try and put myself in that position where if it drops, I'm getting a tap-in. It's working at the moment.' Playing alongside the seemingly uninhibitable Braga, you can't fail to have fun and score goals. 'He's the boy. He's a real character in the group,' acknowledged Wilson. 'You saw his celebration against Hamilton, which was a bit questionable! He's come in and done well and I'm looking forward to playing more with him.'
