Panic as passenger jet needs three attempts to land at Cristiano Ronaldo airport in high wind

Daily Mail25-06-2025
Holidaymakers suffered a scary start to their vacation when their plane needed three attempts to land in high wind.
Plane spotter Oksana Starykova watched from near Madeira's airport and filmed the TAP Air Portugal jet do two go-arounds before safely landing on the third attempt.
Hair-raising footage showed the plane wobbling in the air while apparently being buffeted by strong winds. The pilot then aborted the landing and did a go-around for a second attempt.
Oksana looked anxious as the jet swayed in the wind and even crossed her fingers for luck as the plane came in to land for the third time.
She then cheered as the jet made a safe landing at the Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport on the Portuguese island of Madeira on Sunday June 22.
The airport is named after the Portuguese footballer, who was born on the island.
Oksana, who lives in Madeira and works in tourism, told What's The Jam: 'Aviation is a real passion of mine, wherever I travel in the world, I always seek out the best plane spotting locations.
'Madeira's airport is particularly special for aviation enthusiasts due to its stunning location and challenging approach.

'Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport is famous for being one of the more challenging airports in the world due to its mountainous terrain and coastal winds.'
Commenting on the video, one local said: 'Madeira is one of the worst to land there, they say, it's common to see go-arounds there, scary.'
'I was there in 2022 and it was a bit creepy to land,' said Jonna.
Madeira is one of the most dangerous airports in the world, due to the fact it's built over the ocean and has very strong crosswinds.

Beautiful 'Hawaii of Europe' you can fly to with Ryanair

One travel expert's advice may just make your summer Craving a slice of Hawaii without breaking the bank? One travel enthusiast may just have an ideal budget-friendly recommendation for you. Last month, 'Jamie Travel' took to TikTok to share his admiration for what's commonly dubbed the 'Hawaii of Europe'. Boasting picturesque black sand beaches, mountain trails and vibrant cultural spots, this hidden gem has something for everyone. And Jamie said he managed to get return flights for £67 with Ryanair, too. ‌ "I always wondered why Madeira was called the 'Hawaii of Europe' and soon found out why," Jamie told his 29,000 followers. "I visited for four days earlier this year, and it definitely exceeded my expectations. If you love adventure, hiking or just spending time in nature, but also want the option to chill by a pool, I highly encourage you to visit. ‌ "We secured flights for just £67, made our way into one of the most dangerous airport landings in Europe before checking into our hotel in the city of Funchal." Madeira is a small Portuguese archipelago situated roughly 1,000 km from the European mainland and 500 km from North Africa. It consists of four scenic islands, and its capital city, Funchal, was the birthplace of legendary footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. Although Jamie insists there are '101 things to do' in Madeira, he drew special attention to its various hiking routes, which are also known as 'PR trails'. These run alongside waterfalls and pass through tunnels while providing 'breathtaking mountain views'. He continued: "It's impossible to show you everything that we got up to in one short video, but I will show you the best of what we did there. We started day one by taking a Bolt Taxi up to the PR1 trail for what turned out to be an absolutely incredible sunrise. ‌ READ MORE: Love Islander Demi Jones says she brushed off key symptom before cancer diagnosis "We followed the trail to many of the viewpoints along the way and also walked the famous 'Stairway to Heaven'. We then took a cable car up to Monte Palace, which is one of the most unique places in Madeira before opting for a quicker way down using the famous wicker toboggan ride." In the days following, Jamie and his companions spent some time exploring the island's black sand beaches and natural pools. They also ventured through the eerily enchanting Fanal Forest, considered part of the Laurisilva Forest. You'd be forgiven for thinking this UNESCO Heritage site was pulled straight from a set of The Hobbit. It conserves the largest surviving area of primary laurel forest - a vegetation type now confined to the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. "We also hiked the PR9 trail, which is a 14km out-and-back trail that passes through waterfalls and tunnels," Jamie said. "And you end up at this huge waterfall, the Caldeirão Verde. "It is definitely a trip that went far too quick, so I hope to revisit in the near future. I hope this is your sign to book that trip to Madeira, as it's not somewhere you want to miss."

The little-known Portuguese city named Europe's best ‘hidden gem' for a summer holiday

You know those lesser-known destinations that get largely overlooked by the travel industry but offer just as many outstanding restaurants, pretty views and top-tier vibes as their more famous neighbours, just without all the crowds? Yes, we're talking about 'hidden gems'. It's arguably the most overused phrase in travel writing, but the truth is that Europe is full of drop-dead gorgeous spots that haven't (yet) gone viral on TikTok or been blighted by overtourism. Handily, HomeToGo has designed a European Hidden Gem Index based on data on search trends and holiday home pricing, as well as the quality of the views, the food, and the weather. After crunching all that data, they produced a roundup of the 10 with the highest overall score. Topping their list is Tomar, a lovely Portuguese city in the Ribatejo province, which was founded way back in 1160 and has the historical sights and old-fashioned charm to prove it. Tomar gained a gastronomy score of 8.77, an accommodation cost score of 9.13 (based on the median nightly price per person for a holiday home) and and an under-the-radar score of 9.43, which all contributed to its solid 61.64 total overall. In second place was Brisighella in Italy, scoring 59.12 overall, and in third it was Nafplio in Greece closely behind with 57.82. Read on for the full top 10! These are the top 10 'hidden gems' in Europe for 2025 Tomar, Portugal Brisighella, Italy Nafplio, Greece Puy-l'Évêque, France Bremm, Germany Beynac-et-Cazenac, France Valdoviño, Spain Sibiu, Romania Labeaume, France Beaumaris, Wales, UK Did you see that Europe's best wine destinations in 2025 have been ranked?
