Soccer star Diogo Jota, brother Andre killed in car crash in Spain

Canada News.Net05-07-2025
MADRID, Spain: Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Silva, have died in a car accident in Spain. Spanish police confirmed that the crash occurred near the city of Zamora in the northwest of the country.
The two were traveling in a Lamborghini when the car veered off the road after midnight and caught fire. Both brothers were found dead at the scene.
Jota was 28 years old and had just married Rute Cardoso during his summer break. The couple had three children, the youngest born last year. His wife shared a heartfelt message after their wedding, writing "Yes to forever" on social media.
Police say they are still investigating the cause of the accident. No other vehicles were involved, and it remains unclear who was driving. One theory is that a tire may have burst while the car was trying to overtake another vehicle. Forensic tests are being conducted on the bodies.
The accident happened on a remote stretch of highway near the Portuguese border. Spanish media released video footage showing tire skid marks, broken guardrails, and the charred wreck of the car. A passing truck driver captured video of the vehicle engulfed in flames.
Reports in Portuguese media said Jota was on his way to the northern Spanish city of Santander to catch a ferry to England. He had been advised not to fly due to a recent lung procedure. However, these reports have not been officially confirmed.
The funeral is expected to take place on July 5 in Jota's hometown of Porto, Portugal.
Jota had just completed a successful season with Liverpool, helping the team win the Premier League title. He was also part of Portugal's national team that won the UEFA Nations League, playing his final match for the country on June 8 against Spain. His brother André played for Portuguese lower-league club Penafiel.
Liverpool released a statement saying the club was "devastated" by the loss. Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and requests privacy for the family, friends, teammates, and staff of Diogo and André as they cope with this unimaginable loss. We will continue to support them fully."
Fans left flowers, team scarves, and messages outside Anfield Stadium. Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed deep sorrow: "What can anyone say at a time like this, when the pain is so raw? I wish I had the words, but I don't. My first thoughts are not as a football manager, but as a father, brother, and son. Our hearts are with the family of Diogo and André."
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and went on to score 65 goals in 182 appearances. One of his most memorable goals came in April this year, when he scored the winner in the Merseyside derby against Everton.
Tributes poured in from across the world. Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro said Jota was "an athlete who greatly honored Portugal's name." He added, "It is a sad day for football and for all of sports."
Pedro Proença, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, said, "More than a fantastic player with almost 50 appearances for the national team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person. His joy was contagious. His loss is devastating."
A moment of silence was held before the Women's European Championship match between Portugal and Spain in Switzerland. UEFA also announced that a tribute would be observed at upcoming Euro 2025 matches.
Cristiano Ronaldo, visibly shaken, posted an emotional message: "Just now we were together in the national team. Just now you got married. It doesn't make any sense—my condolences to your wife and children. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. You will be deeply missed."
Liverpool's former club, Porto, and many other clubs, players, and federations expressed their condolences. The Premier League said it was "shocked and devastated" and described Jota as "a champion who will be forever missed."
Even outside the football world, figures such as NBA star LeBron James — a part-owner of Liverpool — and tennis legend Rafael Nadal shared their sympathies.
At Wimbledon, organizers confirmed that players will be allowed to wear black ribbons to honor Jota despite the traditional all-white dress code.
Jota's death marks a profound loss for Portuguese football, Liverpool, and the global sports community. He was not only a talented player but also a beloved teammate, father, and friend.

Jorge Costa, Champions League winning captain of Porto, dies at 53

PORTO, Portugal (AP) — Jorge Costa, who captained Porto to the 2004 Champions League title, died Tuesday of cardiac arrest, the club said. He was 53. Costa, a central defender who made 50 international appearances for Portugal, was Porto's director of football at the time of his death. The club's said in its announcement that Costa embodied Porto's values: 'dedication, leadership, passion, and an unwavering spirit of conquest.' Portuguese media reported that Costa sustained cardiac arrest at the club's training center and was transported to São João Hospital. Costa's finest achievement in his playing career was as captain of Jose Mourinho's Porto team that was a surprise winner of the Champions League in 2004. A year earlier, he lifted the second-tier UEFA Cup. Costa also helped Porto win eight Portuguese league titles. He spent a short period on loan at English team Charlton in the 2001-02 season. 'To hear of a life taken at 53 is never nice to hear, but he's a former teammate who had such a great standing in the game and captained a Champions League winning side,' said Steve Brown, chair of Charlton's ex-players' association. 'He was loved at Charlton, a man mountain of a player and a great guy too.' Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. ___ AP soccer:

Barcelona opens disciplinary proceeding against Ter Stegen for refusing to sign a medical report

MADRID (AP) — Barcelona has opened a disciplinary proceeding against Marc-André ter Stegen saying the goalkeeper refused to sign a medical report about his back injury, according to a person with knowledge of the proceeding. The person who spoke to the The Associated Press on Tuesday did not want to be named because they were not authorized to speak about it publicly. The club needed Ter Stegen to sign the report so it could be sent to the Spanish league in order to clear some salary-cap space and more easily register other players without breaching financial fair play rules. But the club and the goalkeeper are at odds about the recovery time for the surgery that took place last week to deal with recurring lower back ailments. Ter Stegen said ahead of the surgery that the recovery time would be about three months. The club did not give an official timetable for the recovery process, saying only that the operation was 'successful' and that 'his recovery will determine when he can return.' Depending on the length of the recovery process, Barcelona could clear a percentage of Ter Stegen's salary from its cap, making more room to add other players to the squad. The club signed Espanyol goalkeeper Joan García in June. Its other goalkeepers are veteran Wojciech Szczęsny and Iñaki Peña. The league has to evaluate the report before approving the official time of recovery. Ter Stegen, one of the team's captains, did not immediately speak publicly after Barcelona said it opened the disciplinary proceeding. He and the club had been expected to meet to discuss the situation in the coming days. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. The 33-year-old German goalkeeper missed nearly all of last season because of a tendon rupture in his knee, and in 2023 he missed about two months because of another back operation. Peña and the 35-year-old Szczęsny started in place of Ter Stegen during his knee injury. It wasn't clear what type of sanction Ter Stegen was facing for not signing the report. Barcelona, the defending Spanish league champion, arrived back in Spain on Tuesday after completing a preseason tour in Asia. ___ AP soccer:

João Palhinha back in the Premier League with Tottenham on loan from Bayern

LONDON (AP) — Tottenham has bolstered its midfield ahead of its return to the Champions League by signing Portugal international João Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich with an option to buy. The defensive midfielder returns to London and the Premier League a year after leaving Fulham for a much-hyped but largely unsuccessful move to Bayern. He has three years left on his Bayern contract. Bayern and Tottenham both confirmed the move Sunday. Palhinha offers a similar defensive midfield option to Spurs' Rodrigo Bentancur or Yves Bissouma. Expectations for Palhinha at Bayern were high but his time spent there had ended with the Portuguese midfielder spending most of the Club World Cup on the bench. Palhinha was a key target for Bayern in 2023, when then-coach Thomas Tuchel wanted to shore up Bayern's midfield. Palhinha even came to Munich for a medical but Bayern's deal with Fulham collapsed at the last moment. When Bayern finally did sign Palhinha for a reported fee of nearly 50 million euros (then $54.2 million) a year later, Vincent Kompany was the new coach. Palhinha's season was affected by injuries or illness but, even when he was fit, Kompany often preferred youngster Aleksandar Pavlovic in the midfield instead. Palhinha only started 10 of the 25 games he played for Bayern in all competitions and was an unused substitute in four of Bayern's five games at the Club World Cup. It's the second time this off-season that Tottenham has signed a player who was out of favor at Bayern after making forward Mathys Tel's loan move permanent. ___ AP soccer:
