Nagaland University to host incubation centres in N-E under Central govt initiative

Kohima: Nagaland University, the lone Central varsity in the state, has been chosen to host one of the four incubation centres in the northeastern region under a Central government initiative, officials said on Monday. University officials said that the 50 highest-performing beneficiaries would receive a startup seed money grant of up to Rs 5 lakh. The university was chosen under the project 'Establish, Develop, and Manage Entrepreneurship Development Centres and Incubation Centres in the Educational Institutes of the North Eastern Region'. According to the official, this project is being sponsored by the Shillong-based North Eastern Council (NEC), a regional planning body, and implemented by the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), Guwahati. The NEC is the nodal agency for the economic and social development of the northeastern region, which consists of the eight states -- Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura while the IIE is an organisation under the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. Nagaland University's Kohima campus has been designated as one of the four incubation centres in the northeastern region, the official said, adding that a total of 44 beneficiaries would be incubated in the first batch of incubatees. The 44 beneficiaries include 16 from Arunachal Pradesh, six from Assam, four from Manipur, with the remaining 18 from Nagaland. On-boarding of the incubates would be done in July 2025. Nagaland University Vice-Chancellor Jagadish K. Patnaik said that the varsity is the only Central university in the state, and has been selected to host one of the four incubation centres in the northeastern region under a prestigious Central government initiative. "This opportunity reaffirms the university's commitment to academic excellence and nation-building through innovation, research, and inclusive development. We expect to collaborate with stakeholders across academia, industry, and government to make this endeavour a resounding success," he added. Elaborating on the activities that would be taken up under this initiative, Dhrubajyoti Bordoloi, Coordinator, Entrepreneurship Development Centre and Incubation Centre, of the university, said, "Industry experts and established entrepreneurs would provide mentorship to the incubates. Workshops, ideathons, bootcamps and hackathons are contemplated for the forthcoming six months." Bordoloi, who is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Management, Nagaland University, said: "The initiative is the first-of-its-kind in the northeastern region wherein potential entrepreneurs have been identified from the remotest corner of the country. Additionally, an effort has been made to foster an entrepreneurial mindset and intent among the youthful population of the state through the conduct of numerous awareness camps in various institutions and villages." The selection of the incubates was finalised in Financial Year 2024-25 through the 30 entrepreneurship development cells established under the project. A total of 145 beneficiaries were selected by the experts appointed by the nodal agency across the northeastern region, with 44 beneficiaries assigned to the Nagaland University Incubation Centre.

Supreme Court dismisses Byju's settlement plea

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed pleas filed by the BCCI and Riju Raveendran — brother of Byju Raveendran — seeking withdrawal of insolvency proceedings against Byju's and to consider the settlement between the beleaguered edtech company and the BCCI. A Bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadeven refused to interfere with the April 17 order of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) which had ruled that since the settlement proposal was filed after the formation of Committee of Creditors (CoC), it required the approval of the lender's body under the provisions of section 12 A of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. Earlier in February 2025, the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) had directed the petitioners to place their settlement offer before the new CoC, in which US-based Glas Trust, the trustee for lenders to which Byju's owes $1.2 billion, is a member. The Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) against Byju's was initiated in July last year by the NCLAT, admitting a Rs 158.90 crore claim from the BCCI as an operational creditor of edtech major. An Interim Resolution Professional (IRP) was also appointed in this matter. Later, a settlement was reached between the parties, and Byju Raveendran approached the NCLAT. The appellate tribunal set aside the insolvency proceedings against Byju's on August 2, 2024, after approving a dues settlement with the BCCI, which had entered into a Team Sponsor Agreement with the cricket body in 2019. This was challenged by Glas Trust before the Supreme Court. A Bench headed by then Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud halted the NCLAT order and directed the BCCI to deposit the amount in question in a separate escrow account till further orders. Meanwhile, Byju's Alpha, a special purpose financing vehicle established by Byju's in the US to receive proceeds of a $1.5 billion Term Loan B, has sued Byju Raveendran, co-founder and his wife Divya Gokulnath for "orchestrating theft of $533 million". Byju's Alpha said that following the $533 million judgment of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware against Riju Ravindran and Byju's ultimate corporate parent in India, the company has now filed a lawsuit against Byju Raveendran, his co-founder and wife Divya Gokulnath, and his consigliere (advisor), Anita Kishore. The lawsuit states that each of them co-orchestrated and executed a lawless scheme to conceal and steal $533 million of loan proceeds (the 'Alpha Funds'), according to a press release. They further stated that "it is clear that Byju, Divya, and Anita deliberately hid the assets of Byju's Alpha and repeatedly were deceptive about the location of the money in order to steal funds rightfully owed to the Lenders".

Mahindra Industrial Park, Sumitomo Corp sign strategic deal with Osaka govt

In a significant step towards strengthening India–Japan industrial collaboration, Mahindra Industrial Park Chennai Limited (MIPCL), the developer and operator of Origins by Mahindra, along with its 40 per cent stakeholder and marketing arm in Japan, Sumitomo Corporation, has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Osaka Prefecture and the Osaka Industrial Development Bureau (a public interest incorporated foundation that supports Japanese companies based in Osaka in expanding their footprint in India). This milestone partnership reinforces Mahindra's commitment to facilitating high-quality global investment into India's manufacturing sector and positions Tamil Nadu as a preferred destination for Japanese industry. Through this agreement, MIPCL and Sumitomo Corporation will work closely with public institutions to serve as local facilitators for Osaka-based companies exploring opportunities in India. As part of the collaboration, MIPCL and Sumitomo Corporation will support business visits, provide on-ground consultation, and participate in knowledge-sharing seminars hosted in Osaka. The Osaka authorities, in turn, will identify and recommend companies interested in expanding into India, ensuring necessary permissions are in place to facilitate a streamlined entry process for Japanese manufacturers. India, with its projected GDP growth of 6.3 per cent in FY2025 as forecast by the World Bank, remains a powerful draw for international business. As a rising leader in the Global South, India is increasingly seen as a long-term partner for global supply chains. Chennai, in particular, has become a hub of industrial activity due to its strong port connectivity, ease of access to Southeast Asia, and growing presence of automotive, electronics, and semiconductor companies. Origins by Mahindra, Chennai, already hosts six Japanese clients and offers world-class infrastructure and a stable policy environment. The collaboration in Chennai will further strengthen these efforts by enabling tailored support for businesses evaluating the Indian market. MIPCL, backed by Mahindra Lifespaces' deep knowledge of Indian industry, will play a key role in helping Japanese firms navigate regulatory frameworks, secure land and utilities, and scale up operations with confidence. Amit Kumar Sinha, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mahindra Lifespace Developers Ltd., said, 'This partnership reflects our vision to build future-ready ecosystems that align with India's manufacturing ambitions. It also underscores our focus on setting new benchmarks through successful Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), enabling long-term, sustainable industrial progress. The expansion strengthens India's industrial ecosystem and supports economic growth.' Vikram Goel, Chief Business Officer (Industrial), Mahindra Lifespace Developers Ltd., said, 'This engagement with Osaka Prefecture marks a milestone in our efforts to enable global investments into India through our industrial ecosystems. Origins by Mahindra, Chennai, has been developed to meet the needs of international manufacturers, offering operational readiness, regulatory support, and integrated infrastructure. Through this collaboration, we are well-positioned to support the specific requirements of diverse companies while also deepening the socio-economic impact of our industrial cluster in Tamil Nadu.' The agreement underlines the spirit of cooperation and mutual interest shared by all parties. By aligning strategic intent with operational expertise, this partnership marks a new chapter in Mahindra's efforts to attract and enable world-class manufacturing in India.
