Nabu Museum opens anti-war poster exhibition 'Peoples Against Wars, Bombs, and Governments'
A powerful visual protest against war, violence, environmental degradation, and authoritarianism, the exhibition transforms the museum's walls into a platform for peaceful resistance. It invites all, especially Lebanon's political parties, to adopt a language of dialogue and reconciliation rather than conflict and destruction.
Among the highlights is a series of rare posters bearing the slogan 'Ban the Bomb,' a rallying cry from the 1960s countercultural movement. These pieces, acquired from global auctions, serve as stark reminders of humanity's historical missteps—particularly eight decades after the bombing of Hiroshima—and as a warning against repeating them.
More than artistic expressions, the posters are tools of dissent and symbols of nonviolent philosophy. They question the normalization of militarization and promote the enduring power of art, music, and protest to reshape the discourse around peace, justice, and the future of humanity.
The exhibition is open to the public from Wednesday to Sunday, between 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM.

BEIRUT — The municipality of Haret Hreik organized a ceremony Tuesday marking the first anniversary of the death of former Hezbollah military leader Fouad Shukur, unveiling a commemorative monument bearing his likeness. Fouad Shukur, identified by the Israeli army as "Hezbollah's highest-ranking military official" and "Hassan Nasrallah's right-hand man," was killed in an Israeli strike on an apartment building in Beirut's southern suburbs in July 2024. According to reports from the state-run National News Agency (NNA), the monument will be installed at the site of the strike. The ceremony was attended by Hezbollah MPs Ali Ammar, Amine Chirri and Ibrahim Moussaoui, the vice president of Hezbollah's political council, former minister Mahmoud Comati, the president of the union of municipalities in southern Beirut's suburbs, engineer Mohammad Daghmach, religious figures, heads and members of municipal councils, as well as Shukur's family. Speaking on this occasion, Comati praised "the dignity and honor of the Hezbollah leaders and resistance fighters," warning that "the real danger today is the very existence of Lebanon as a nation." He stated: "We have no other choice but to be united and to gather all our forces and capabilities to protect our country alongside the Lebanese Army." Concluding, he affirmed that "no one will be able to put an end to the resistance." For his part, Haret Hreik's vice president, Sadek Slim, described the commemorative monument as "a modest sign of loyalty to an exceptional man," who represents "all the martyrs who fell in this sacred battle to defend the land and honor." Hezbollah launched its first attack on Israel from Lebanon on Oct. 8, 2023, the day after the Al-Aqsa Flood operation, saying it was opening a "support front" with Hamas. The conflict between Lebanon and Israel then escalated into open war between September and November 2024, during which Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and virtually the entire military command of Hezbollah were killed. After suffering heavy losses, the pro-Iranian group agreed to a cease-fire on Nov. 27, 2024.

Salam briefs Berri on the outcomes of his visit to France
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam met with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri on Saturday in Ain al-Tineh to discuss the outcome of his recent visit to Paris, according to the state-run National News Agency (NNA). 'President Salam briefed Nabih Berri on the results of his official visit to Paris and his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, which reaffirmed France's support for Lebanon across various sectors, as well as its commitment to renewing the mandate of UNIFIL, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, to help preserve stability in the South,' the agency reported. Berri and Salam also discussed 'reformist draft laws submitted by the government to Parliament, notably the bill on judicial independence and the one on restructuring the banking sector.' During Salam's visit to Paris on Thursday — his first since taking office — President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the need to continue implementing reforms in order to hold an international conference to support Lebanon and mobilize the necessary aid for reconstruction. He also announced that France would contribute €75 million (approximately $88.16 million) to the Lebanon Emergency Assistance Program (LEAP) set up by the World Bank.

Finance minister signs July bonus decree for military personnel, retirees and martyrs' families
BEIRUT — Finance Minister Yassine Jaber on Wednesday signed a decree granting a July financial bonus to active-duty military personnel, retirees and the families of fallen soldiers, the state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported. He then referred it to the Cabinet in line with the applicable legal procedures, NNA added. The aid, set at LL4 million (around $45) per month for active-duty soldiers and LL12 million (around $134) per month for retirees starting July 1, 2025, is to be funded by a fuel tax approved by the Cabinet but challenged by unions, political parties and civil society groups. That fuel tax has been suspended by the State Shura Council — the high court responsible for ruling on administrative matters — on July 16, without affecting the aid distribution. Since the onset of Lebanon's financial crisis in 2019, public sector salaries, including pensions, have collapsed due to the sharp depreciation of the Lebanese Lira. Retired Lebanese military personnel regularly hold protests demanding for increase in their wages, denouncing what they see as systemic injustice, claiming that military retirees have been disproportionately affected compared to other public sector employees who have received salary increases.
