Drama and excitement as guest conductor takes up the baton at BBC SSO

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra marketed this live broadcast performance on the box office potential of Spanish pianist Javier Perianes playing Mozart's perennially-popular concerto No 17, and there was nothing wrong with that part of the programme, even if did seem a little strange that the soloist was relying on a score for a work he must have played many times.
But for many in the hall, and listening on Radio 3, the real interest lay in the works on either side of the Mozart and in the conductor on the podium. Anja Bihlmaier is Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic in Manchester and earlier in the day the announcement of the BBC Proms programme had included the news that she will premiere a new electric guitar concerto by Mark Simpson with Scotland's Sean Shibe on July 22 in the Royal Albert Hall.
The work that filled the second half of this concert was also fairly new, the 2016 'symphonic suite' created by Manfred Honeck and Tomas Ille from Richard Strauss's opera Elektra. If the composer himself had crafted such an orchestral concert piece it would surely have sounded much along these lines, incorporating all the most compelling music in the score, culminating in an instrumental performance of the final scene.

Bihlmaier gloried in the huge forces under her baton but was equally attentive to the moments that featured just front desk strings and wind soloists – much of the delight in this half hour of music came from her precision control of the dynamics. The orchestral Elektra may lack the sense of humour in Strauss's tone poems, but in all other respects can sit alongside them as a repertoire piece.
The conductor began the concert with another new/old work celebrating females from dramatic tragedy. Melanie Bonis was taught by Cesar Franck and her Trois femmes de legende: Salome; Ophelia; The Dream of Cleopatra share elements of their orchestration with Ravel and Debussy. Composed in the first decade of the 20th century, they were only assembled as a suite a decade ago, which the RSNO and Thomas Sondergard played last Spring.
If not quite as epic as the Strauss, it is also assured regular performances by the range of orchestral colour it contains, with terrific opportunities for the wind soloists – and Bihlmaier found all the drama in the lyrically-expressed fate of the Egyptian queen.

Truth about Emma Raducanu boyfriend now emerges as new man turns up after Alcaraz hotel visit

Truth about Emma Raducanu boyfriend now emerges as new man turns up after Alcaraz hotel visit The tennis star's love life has been in the spotlight at Wimbledon Raducanu was seen watching Alcaraz in action at Queen's last month All eyes will be on Emma Raducanu at Wimbledon on Friday as she takes on top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the third round of the women's singles at SW19. The 22-year-old has impressed in the opening two rounds of this year's tournament, easing past Welsh teenager Mimi Xu with a 6-3, 6-3 victory in her first match before beating Marketa Vondrousova by the same scoreline in round two. However, the biggest challenge of her campaign so far awaits on Centre Court on Friday afternoon, with Sabalenka currently the top-ranked women's player in the world. ‌ With the home crowd behind her, however, Raducanu will be hoping to cause an upset as she looks to let her tennis do the talking, having never really lived up to the 2021 US Open triumph that catapulted her to fame as a teenager. ‌ Going into this year's Wimbledon, however, much of the conversation around Raducanu revolved around her life away from the court, particularly her personal relationships. While there's lots of rumours, there is no confirmation Raducanu is currently in a relationship. Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz rumour The British star has seen herself romantically linked to a host of different men both within and outside of tennis, with rumours swirling ahead of the tournament of a potential relationship between her and reigning Wimbledon men's singles champion Carlos Alcaraz. Article continues below Suggestions that the pair were more than just friends first emerged last summer, but gathered pace last month when it was announced that they would partner each other in the mixed doubles competition at the US Open later this year. Raducanu was also seen cheering on Alcaraz as he won the men's singles event at Queen's, while reports emerged that the Spanish star had visited her at her hotel during the tournament. But while tongues were wagging, the British ace soon shut down the speculation at a Wimbledon press conference, telling reporters: "We're just good friends". ‌ Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper rumour Despite Raducanu's insistence, rumours linking her to Alcaraz have persisted with Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios stirring the pot by claiming that she is in a 'love triangle' with the Spaniard and fellow British player Jack Draper, who she has also been linked with having known him since childhood. "I don't know, I think it's a love triangle," he told talkSPORT. "They're [Alcaraz and Draper] fighting over Raducanu I think, I'm not sure." However, the links between Raducanu, Alcaraz and Draper have since been superseded by rumours of a new man in the British women's No.1's life. ‌ The new man in the crowd Former tennis prodigy Benjamin Heynold was seen supporting Raducanu at Wimbledon earlier this week, sitting alongside her coach Nick Cavaday as she beat Vondrousova on Wednesday. Now a 24-year-old student at the University of North Carolina, Heynold has known the British star since they were six, while they both represented Team GB together at junior level. While not much else is known about Heynold, his long-standing friendship with Raducanu has led to speculation that their relationship may have evolved into something more serious, as he was also seen in her corner at Queen's last month, as well as other tournaments previously. ‌ Emma Raducanu and Romeo Beckham rumour It comes after Raducanu was also linked to David and Victoria Beckham's son Romeo after he watched her in action against Elise Mertens at Wimbledon last year. The former Brentford footballer took to Instagram while at the match to post a picture of Raducanu playing, which he accompanied with two love heart emojis. While the post again set tongues wagging, Raducanu played down suggestions of a romantic link after the match as she said: "I mean, I think he's, yeah, he's really cool. ‌ "His dad is, you know, someone that I think every athlete looks up to, especially every British athlete, you know what he's kind of gone through with the media, with his career, with the pressure moments." Emma Raducanu's split from billionaire's son Speculation around Raducanu's personal life follows her split from Carlo Agostinelli, the son of billionaire Robert Agostinelli and a footballer previously on the books of Tottenham Hotspur, last year. The couple reportedly first started dating in May 2023 and were seen on trips together, including one to Mexico as they attended Dior's 2024 Cruise show. They were also seen walking arm-in-arm and smiling together at Paris Fashion Week as their romance was confirmed. ‌ However, they later split up, with Raducanu unfollowing Agostinelli on social media just weeks ahead of last year's Wimbledon. Parents intervention While her love life is a hot topic at present, the tennis ace has revealed that her parents imposed a 'boyfriend' ban on her when she was younger, in order to keep her focused on her training. "My parents were very much against [boyfriends] as it interfered with training," she told The Times. "When I was younger I wasn't even allowed to hang out with my girl friends. Article continues below "A lot of the time I was very resentful [of the ban]. But it made me very confident and comfortable in my own company, which is also a big strength."

Oasis fans from across the world flock to Cardiff as reunion tour kicks off

Oasis fans from all over the world have flocked to Cardiff as the band kicks off their reunion tour at the Principality Stadium tonight. Boston, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Germany, and Chile are among just some of the countries fans have travelled from to attend the concert in Wales's capital. Some fans have spent over a day travelling, with Lachlan Weekes and Jayden Helm flying from Sydney, Australia. 'We've been planning it forever. We always said that if they got back together, we'd be at that first show,' Mr Weekes said. Mr Helm added: 'We've been lifelong fans – we're 22 and 21, so haven't really had a chance to see them before. 'We always said it was worth it to come, we wouldn't miss it for the world,' he added. 'To take time off work to come over here, it's more than worth it.' Alex Schuetz, an Oasis fan from Germany, said nowhere is too far to travel to see the band. Mr Schuetz said: 'The first time I saw them was in 1997. The last time was in Manchester 2009, just before they broke up. I even got a ticket for a small festival in Germany and on the ferry to that festival I heard they broke up. "I was like, 'Oh my god' something was dying inside of me – it sounds a bit stupid, but it took me ages (to get over it)." He added: 'I've come from Germany. You cannot travel far enough, I've been a fan since 1995." Closer to home, Jimmy Evans and his father Lawrence, from just outside Swansea, are looking forward to their first Oasis gig together. Lawrence said: 'My life changed when I got into Oasis because that's when I started playing music, I started to write songs, I'm in a band, none of that would have happened if I hadn't got into Oasis. 'They were the band that made me realise how much guitar music meant to me.' He added: 'It's something that stays with you forever. If you get into this type of music, I think it's in your soul forever.' Jimmy said: 'The fact that it's in Wales is really special for us. It's the first time I get to see Oasis, (my dad) he's lost count, he's seen them countless times. I've been waiting for this day all my life.' One fan who had travelled from Los Angeles told ITV Cyrmu Wales that it had been "a long flight" to get to Wales. "I was nine when they broke up so I came way late to the game, but my dad showed me Oasis when I was growing up so I've always been a fan," he said. "When they got back together, it was an instant, 'Oh, I have to go to that - I have no choice.'" A Spanish fan who had travelled from Benidorm for the concert said: "We come to Cymru only to see Oasis. For me, it's the band of when I was young." It's more than 15 years since the band was last in the city. Doors for the gig are expected to open at 5pm, with Cast and the Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft in support. Former members of the group are expected to make a return, with Andy Bell on bass, and Gem Archer and Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs on guitars. Noel was spotted getting off the train in Cardiff on Tuesday, while a drone display spelling out the band's name could be seen over the stadium on Wednesday. Following Cardiff, Oasis will visit Manchester's Heaton Park, London's Wembley Stadium, Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium and Dublin's Croke Park throughout July, August and September. The group will then head to Japan, South Korea, South America, Australia and North America.

Diogo Jota's loving relationship with ‘number one fan' Rute Cardoso from meeting at school to heartbreaking wedding post

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) TOGETHER since their teens, Diogo Jota and new wife Rute Cardoso chased a footballing dream. When his burgeoning career in their native Portugal resulted in a move to Spanish giants Atletico Madrid, she described herself as his 'best friend' and 'number one fan'. A couple who met at school aged 13, their marriage a mere 11 days ago sealed a romance that had already produced three cherubic children. Joyous wedding photographs, showing a young family on life's great journey, are now heartbreaking to look at. Sons Dinis, four, and Duarte, two, are in the same dark blue jackets, cream waistcoats and blue ties as their footballer father. A baby girl, not named publicly, wears a miniature tiara and ivory-coloured gown to match her mother. Now Ruta is a widow at 28. The children lost both a father and an uncle in the terrible early hours crash on a lonely Spanish motorway. Just 20 hours earlier, Diogo and Rute wrote on social media that their wedding was a 'day we will never forget'. Under one photo, she wrote, 'My dream came true' — to which Diogo had replied: 'But I'm the lucky one.' Social media images show family life including trips to Lapland and Sardinia, photos with pet beagles and in red strips of Liverpool on the pitch at Anfield and at Wembley. It was a love forged in Portugal's beautiful second city Porto where forward Jota was born in December 1996. His birth name was Diogo José Teixeira da Silva. As a promising, pacey young footballer he dropped his surname and used Jota which is the local pronunciation of 'J'. 'Heartbroken' Ronaldo leads tributes to Diogo Jota as football mourns Liverpool & Portugal star Soon, his talents outgrew his local club Gondomar and, aged 16, he moved to lower league club Pacos de Ferreira. Scout Ivo Rodrigues remembers watching Diogo in 2013. He said: 'My eyes were drawn to him like a magnet. He was the youngest on the pitch but I saw he was going to be a star. He could do things that other ones could not.' But attempts by Ivo to sign him for Guimaraes proved fruitless. The year before, an Instagram image showed him with Rute in hoodies and jeans acting like typical teenagers. In 2015, Jota's career might have stalled before it really began. Pre-season tests revealed a heart problem. Showing maturity beyond his years, he wrote: 'I knew it could mean quitting football, but I didn't believe for a second it was going to happen.' A natural goalscorer, he would earn selection for Portugal's international youth teams and soon the big time beckoned. He was snapped up by Spanish giants Atletico Madrid in 2016 when he was 19. Rute wrote of his move: 'I'm anxious. Diogo only left this week, but I already miss him. We've been dating for four years and . . . it makes sense to follow him. In addition to being his girlfriend and best friend, I'm his number one fan, I want to be there.' However, Diogo would never play for the Atletico first team and a month after joining went out on loan to Portuguese giants Porto. At the time, his brother Andre Silva, 25 — also killed in yesterday's fireball crash — was with Porto's youth set-up. Scoring eight goals in 27 appearances, Diogo's performances earned him another loan move the next season — this time to England with Wolves, then in the Championship. His 17 league goals helped Wolves win promotion to the Premier League and secured a permanent move for a reported £12million. Wolves finished seventh the next season as they qualified for the Europa League — a competition in which Diogo bagged an 11-minute hat-trick against Turkish side Besiktas after coming on as a sub. In now poignant comments, he said after that game: 'It makes me proud. It's a story to tell my grandkids when I get old.' He and Rute were able to enjoy the fruits of his success. Instagram photos she posted show her posing on his shoulders at Disneyland Paris and sight-seeing at the London Eye. Captioning an image of them together on a sun-kissed beach in the Maldives, she wrote: 'And suddenly you see your entire future in one person.' In September 2020, Liverpool snapped Diogo up for £45million. He and Rute had made it to one of world football's greatest clubs in the richest and most glamorous league. Then-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said of Diogo: 'He has the speed, he can combine with other players, can defend, can press. It gives us real options for different systems. 'He's 23, still far away from being kind of a finished article — he has so much potential.' A player blessed with the knack of scoring vital goals, he soon became a Kop favourite. A terrace chant for him, including a reference to Portuguese great Luis Figo, went: 'He's a lad from Portugal, better than Figo don't you know, oh his name is Diogo!' In the 2021-22 season, he scored 21 in 55 games — part of an impressive 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool. Hampered by injuries last season, his final goal for Liverpool showed just what a classy player he was. In the Merseyside derby, he slalomed past Everton defenders in a packed box before slotting the ball home. His final match was for Portugal — his 49th cap — a victory over Spain to win the Uefa Nations League. The close season gave him a chance to marry Rute. Beneath a photo of the elegant couple at the altar, the new bride wrote on social media: 'Yes to forever.' Diogo once described himself as 'a small guy that came from Gondomar, where I had this dream'. With Rute at his side, he perhaps achieved more than he possibly imagined. A tragedy that, at 28, this supremely talented player and dearly loved husband and dad had so much more to give.
