Sonay Kartal: I've proved to myself I can beat some of the best players
It was a close affair, with Pavlyuchenkova putting aside controversy over a line call after a failure of the new electronic system to edge a 7-6 (3) 6-4 victory and reach the last eight at Wimbledon for the first time in nine years.

Kartal said: 'I'm obviously pretty devastated to not get the win. People were saying to me that the draw had really opened up but I think she played like a seed today.
'She was seeing the ball so well, taking it super early right from the very first point. She played two games which was almost unplayable for me. I think I did well to keep it as tight as I did.
'A few mistakes at not ideal times. I think that was the only difference today. I'm proud of the week that I've had, for sure.
'I've proved to myself that I can go deep into slams, I can beat some of the best players on tour. I'm going to go away with a lot of motivation.'
A thunderous entrance ⚡️

Kartal, who will overtake Emma Raducanu to become British number two, could not have had a more dramatic entrance for her first time on Centre Court, with a huge clap of thunder reverberating around the arena as she strode out.
'I think there was thunder when I walked on and thunder when I came off,' said Kartal. 'That's one pretty cool entrance. I loved it.
'Walking out on to Centre, you just get goosebumps. You've got the roof closed, it's even louder. It was crazy. One very good experience I'm glad that I'll have on camera to watch every now and again.
'It was a dream come true being able to play on Centre today.'
Kartal had started slowly in all her matches and it was the same here, with Pavlyuchenkova, who made her Wimbledon debut back in 2007, moving into a 2-0 lead.
But the British player, who had her right knee heavily bandaged, had showed in beating Jelena Ostapenko in round one that she could overcome the power hitters, worked her way into the contest and it was finely balanced when the line-calling system took centre stage.
On game point serving at 4-4, Pavlyuchenkova was convinced a Kartal shot had landed long but the technology was not working at the time – which Wimbledon organisers later attributed to human error – and the point was replayed.
Pavlyuchenkova went on to lose the game, leaving Kartal serving for the opening set, and she furiously told umpire Nico Helwerth at the change of ends: 'Because she is local, they can say whatever. You took the game away from me.'
Kartal had one chance to clinch the set but could not take it and ultimately Pavlyuchenkova's ability to hit winners – 36 in total – made the difference.

TV star Claire Sweeney speaks out as ex Ricky Hatton makes major announcement
Coronation Street's Claire Sweeney has thrown her support behind her ex-partner Ricky Hatton following his bombshell announcement about a return to boxing. The British boxing icon, who had a romance with the actor over several months last year, is set to make a sensational comeback to the ring after a 13-year hiatus. Hatton, aged 46 and originally from Hyde, is poised to take on Eisa Al Dah in a middleweight clash scheduled for December 2 in Dubai, marking his first professional fight since 2012. READ MORE - Rosie O'Donnell supported by fans after sad admission ahead of Edinburgh shows READ MORE - Nicolas Jarry's telling response when quizzed on spat with Cameron Norrie at Wimbledon Although he did step into the ring for an exhibition match against Marco Antonio Barrera in 2022, this upcoming event marks a significant return to formal competition. Al Dah, also 46, holds the accolade of being the United Arab Emirates' inaugural professional boxer, having started his career back in March 2007 against Larry Foster, reports the Manchester Evening News. Plans for Hatton to jet off to Dubai for the press conference announcing the fight were thwarted after he reportedly suffered an eye injury at the Oasis reunion concert last week in Cardiff; he was advised not to travel until it had fully healed. Despite not attending in person, Hatton joined in via video link, expressing his enthusiasm: "I'm very much looking forward to it myself, to be honest with you. What you're trying to do there for boxing in Dubai is fantastic." Sweeney shared her enthusiasm on her Instagram Story, posting a video of the announcement with the caption: "This is brilliant @rickyhitmahatton." The duo's relationship sparked while both participating in Dancing on Ice earlier in 2024, although their paths had crossed intermittently over the past two decades. Claire, famed for her stint on Channel 4's Brookside, has experienced marriage twice. Her first was with Tony Hibbard, lasting from 2001 until their split in 2007, followed by a union with Daniel Reilly from 2013 to 2015. Ricky, on the other hand, has never tied the knot but was involved in a lengthy 11-year relationship with Jennifer Dooley, spanning from 2005 to 2016. The pair, Claire and Ricky, have been spotted basking in each other's company, having jetted off on multiple breaks together. However, it was confirmed that their relationship drew to a close in December. Addressing the split with MailOnline, Claire shared: "I'm great - we're still friends, we were friends, we dated and now we're friends again. It's all good!". This revelation aligns with what an insider informed the publication, making it clear that they "remain good friends" and that there was no "fallout between them".

'I went to the British GP at Silverstone and cost of car park left me floored'
A woman who attended the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday (July 6) has taken to social media to hit out at one costly aspect of the Formula 1 event A Formula 1 fan expressed her frustration at one aspect of Sunday's British Grand Prix at Silverstone. British McLaren driver, Landon Norris emerged victorious on a rain-soaked afternoon in Northamptonshire, with teammate Oscar Pistori and Nico Hulkenberg also securing podium finishes. Amid the celebrations at the event - which cost between £70 and £329 for a single-day admission - TikTok user @f1girlGB was left having to fork out another small fortune, simply to park her own car. Sharing a video from the site's public car park, a sign stated that payments should be made prior to leaving, outlines costs for stays on each day from Thursday to Sunday. Despite the race taking place on Sunday, fans are invited to attend from Thursday to meet team members, visit the track's museum as well as take part in several more race-related events. Friday sees more action including drivers' practices, before Saturday's qualifying ahead of the main event on Sunday. To be there on all four days appears to cost an arm and a leg – as the TikTok user's video also laid out the costs detailed on the sign. These were: Thursday parking £80; Friday parking £80; Saturday parking £130; and Sunday parking £130. The video of the sign has been viewed a staggering 900,000 times, despite the fan's modest following of just 314. Thousands of those who viewed it vented their ill feelings too. "There's me thinking I couldn't afford the actual tickets when actually I couldn't even afford the parking!", one person quipped in response. A second fumed: "Exactly why I won't go to Silverstone F1, but will go abroad to watch F1." A third added: "Silverstone is now just a rip off. I don't know how people can afford it, when they have no money to pay bills etc." A fourth TikTok user slammed: "That's actually insane and totally unjustified. Things just die on the vine in this country because of price gouging and corporate greed. In a few years they'll be complaining that the crowds aren't as big any more and they'll wonder why." Whilst a fifth pondered: "Must put a lot of people off, but they still seem to have lots of cars there, so people must be willing to pay those extortionate prices, fair enough. Guess I'll never go to Silverstone." Detailing a slightly more cost-effective alternative, meanwhile, another individual pointed out: "If you book online in advance its £50 a day or £150 for the full weekend." Whilst someone else claimed: "Local schools charged £50 for the weekend, which was about a 30 minute walk and much quicker than queuing out of the car park."

Incoming Hearts signings Sabah Kerjota and Pierre Landry Kabore are due in Edinburgh for medicals this week ahead of completing their transfers. Deals have been agreed and terms finalised for both players, who are set to travel to Scotland and begin their careers at Tynecastle Park. Work permit documents are being processed and, unless there is an unexpected delay, Kerjota and Kabore could be in place for Saturday's opening Premier Sports Cup tie against Dunfermline Athletic. They have said farewells to their respective clubs in Italy and Estonia and are eager to seize the chance of playing top-flight football in the William Hill Premiership. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hearts are set to pay a transfer fee of around £120,000 to sign Kerjota from the Italian Serie C club US Sambenedettese, where his contract runs until 2028. He is a left-footed winger who favours the right flank. With 10 goals and 11 assists as Sambenedettese gained promotion from Italy's regional leagues last season, the 23-year-old's form attracted attention. Kabore, a Burkina Faso internationalist, is leaving JK Narva Trans after 12 goals in 15 league games in Estonia's Meistriliiga. Hearts have agreed a modest fee for for a player who is also left footed but prefers the right wing and is also an effective central striker. Narva Trans head coach Roman Kožuhhovski explained that he cannot stand in the way of Kabore, who turned 24 on Saturday. 'If Kabore leaves, I can only be happy for him,' said Kožuhhovski, who has used Kabore as a striker frequently. 'I'll tell you why. Yes, we're losing a quality player who has developed tremendously. If you compare Kabore from last season to this year, they're two completely different strikers. I don't want to hold anything back, we've worked a lot with our coaching team on him. Kabore deserves to progress in his career. 'This is also a sign to other players that it is possible to go abroad from this club. This is not only good for Trans, but for the entire Estonian Premier League. I wished Kabore a happy birthday. I wrote that because of him I became 10 years older, because at times my nervous system couldn't handle it,' joked Kožuhovski. 'He laughed about it. Of course, I'm glad that I managed to work with such a player.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Estonia exit for Hearts transfer target as Scotland beckons With contract terms agreed, Kabore admitted excitement at the prospect of experiencing British football with Hearts. 'I don't know how they found me,' he told Estonian media. 'I have to express a huge thank you to my agent. I'm very happy that I had the opportunity to make a step up from the Estonian Premier League. 'I will continue working there, hoping to go even further. Why not become the top scorer in the Scottish league and then move on from there? To England or France? I will take it step by step. I will miss Narva and Estonia. I started playing for Trans last season, but I feel like this team has become a family for me. I wish the club all the best. It's sad to leave here, but it's a step that has to be taken. My ambition remains the same everywhere — I want to score in every possible game.' Both players are joining Hearts after head coach Derek McInnes stated he wanted to strengthen the right side of his attack. The Edinburgh club have signed the Kazakhstan internationalist Islam Chesnokov on a pre-contract agreement. He is due to arrive in November and attempts to negotiate a quick transfer this summer have failed with his club, Tobol Kostanay, reluctant to lose him. Chesnokov spoke over the weekend but remained coy about joining Hearts with Tobol aiming to challenge for the league title. 'I won't deny it, I like British football — I enjoy that kind of physical, competitive game. But right now, I'm a Tobol player, and all my thoughts and energy are focused on the club,' he said.
