From WiFi to Libraries: 5 Indian autos that went viral for innovation and kindness in the past
uto rickshaws are usually just a way to get from one place to another– fast, cheap, and nothing fancy. But in some Indian cities, a few auto drivers are turning that idea on its head.
From creating mini libraries to offering free rides for a cause, these drivers are adding heart, creativity, and even innovation to their three-wheelers.
Here's a look at five inspiring stories where ordinary auto rides became anything but routine– solving everyday problems, spreading kindness, or simply making someone's day a little brighter.
A Mumbai auto driver who doesn't drive– but had a unique hustle
Outside the US Consulate in Mumbai, visitors aren't allowed to carry bags inside, and there are no locker facilities nearby.
That's where an autorickshaw driver stepped in with an unusual solution.
As shared in a viral LinkedIn post by Rahul Rupani, the driver offered to hold his bag for ₹1,000, claiming it was part of his daily routine. Rupani estimated the driver handled 20–30 bags a day, potentially earning up to ₹8 lakh a month. The auto acted as a collection point, with bags later stored securely, reportedly in coordination with a local police officer.

Bengaluru auto with a flat-style window draws attention
In 2024, a Bengaluru auto sparked a wave of reactions online for one unusual feature– a sliding UPVC window, the kind typically seen in residential buildings. The auto was spotted by social media user Tanvi Gaikwad, who posted a photo on August 29 with the caption: 'This auto has a window whattt.'
Her post quickly gained traction, gathering over five lakh views and more than 4,000 likes. While one side of the rickshaw remained open for boarding, the other had a closed panel with glass windows– a setup that stood out. Many users on X referred to it as a 'business class auto' or 'Rickshaw Pro Ultra,' with some even joking it looked like a '1BHK in Mumbai.'
In Delhi, an auto becomes a cool ride– literally
In 2022, to cope with Delhi's extreme heat, 48-year-old auto driver Mahendra Kumar added a rooftop garden to his rickshaw.
Lush with over 20 varieties of plants, including vegetables and flowers, the greenery helps cool the vehicle naturally. Kumar told AFP, 'Around two years ago, I had this idea during the peak of the summer season. I thought if I could grow some plants on the roof, it would keep my auto cool and give relief from the heat to my passengers.
'
He also fitted the auto with small coolers and fans. 'It is now like a natural AC,' he said, adding that many passengers are so pleased they offer him an extra ₹10–20.
The setup has turned his vehicle into a local attraction, with people often stopping to take photos of what many call a 'moving garden.'
Chennai's 'auto anna' offers more than just a ride
By 2021, Chennai's Anna Durai– known to many as 'Auto Anna' – had already transformed his rickshaw into a service-on-wheels. At 32, he ran his vehicle like a mini customer lounge, equipped with a mini-fridge, free WiFi, an iPad, and even a card payment machine.
His story was widely shared in July 2021 by Humans of Bombay, with a video that went viral and received over 1.3 million views.
Once an aspiring businessman who couldn't complete formal education, Anna chose to build something unique on wheels.
The rickshaw also features a snack bar, magazines, charging ports, hand sanitizer, and masks. Anna has delivered multiple TEDx talks, and even has his own website and mobile app. His motto: 'Customers are God,' a belief he brings to life in every ride.
Mysuru auto surprises passenger with a mini-library
Recently, in Mysuru, a simple auto ride turned into something memorable for artist Lisiya, who discovered that the rickshaw she was riding had a full-fledged mini-library inside.
She shared a video of the experience on Instagram, which has now crossed three million views.
Books were neatly placed inside the vehicle, along with bookmarks that carried thoughtful messages. Her post included a text overlay that read: 'Look what I found on my Uber ride. What a wonderful thought.'
The concept is the work of Daniel Mardona, who has created a small reading corner inside his auto, giving daily commuters a quiet space to pause and engage with books while on the move.

With new energy, JSW gets ready to disrupt EV market
Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group has set up a dedicated automotive vertical-JSW Motors. This will be an umbrella platform under which the group will launch passenger cars focussed on new energy vehicles at an investment of up to $3 billion over the next five years with launches set to begin in the second half of FY26. It will be separate from the group's joint venture with China's SAIC, JSW MG Motor India. JSW Motors is in talks with three-four companies across Italy, Germany, South Korea and China for collaborations to design and develop these cars, which will be sold under the JSW brand, newly appointed chief executive officer Ranjan Nayak told ET in his first media interview. All vehicles will be made in India, with the earmarked resources deployed for commissioning the manufacturing facility, research and development. JSW's automotive hub, spread across 630 acres, is coming up at Bidkin in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in Maharashtra. Elaborating on the expansion strategy, Nayak said JSW Motors is aiming to disrupt the domestic electric vehicle (EV) market by manufacturing "world class automotive products in the country" by leveraging the best technologies from across the globe, including Italy, Germany, South Korea and China, and combining that with India's own strengths in robust supply chain and digital integration. "We are looking at rapidly scaling up our in-house automotive technology, and not remain dependent on any external entity. Our integrated approach allows us to combine global excellence with local relevance, ensuring high performance, affordability and sustainability," Nayak said, adding, "Our first New Energy Vehicle (NEV) under the JSW badge will hit the roads in the second half of FY2026." Nayak said JSW Motors is drawing on "the unique strengths of industry-leading partners" from around the world, without specifying details of the companies it is collaborating with. "We will be combining the craftsmanship and aesthetics of Italian designers and the German precision in manufacturing and engineering with the advanced welding technologies from South Korea and China's expertise in electric propulsion systems, battery innovation and New Energy Vehicle (NEV) technologies with that of the Indian IT sector's deep capabilities in software and digital integration," said Nayak. He declined to share details of the investments the JSW Group has scheduled for its automotive venture. However, industry sources said the group has lined up an investment to the tune of $2-3 billion in its automotive business over the next five years. Similar to its strategy in the steel sector, JSW intends to "energize the auto ecosystem-spurring suppliers and competitors to rise with us" to accelerate India's shift to clean mobility and reduce its dependence on oil, said Nayak, who is also executive vice president and head, corporate strategy, JSW Group. "Our aim is to push New Energy Vehicle penetration to 50per cent, offering affordable, world-class electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid vehicles," he said. Nayak said China is at the forefront of EV and hybrid vehicle innovation and has become an integral part of the global automotive supply chain. As the world rapidly shifts toward sustainable mobility, technologies such as Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), pioneered by Chinese automakers, are redefining the industry landscape. By combining the best global technologies with India's own strengths, JSW Motors intends to bring high-quality, technologically advanced, energy efficient and environmentally responsible vehicles. This approach will deliver "unmatched value to Indian customers and propel the country towards a more secure, sustainable and self-reliant automotive future," he said. "Like global industry leaders-including those from Europe, America (like Tesla and GM), and Japan-we embrace relevant advancements from China and other innovation hubs, integrating them within India's ecosystem. Promoting EV, PHEV and hybrid technologies is also critical from an energy security standpoint." he said.

Ty Gibbs Turns $1M NASCAR In-Season Tournament Challenge Win into a Heartfelt Post-Race Gesture
Image via Imagn: Ty Gibbs Ty Gibbs scored big at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, winning NASCAR's first-ever In-Season Tournament and earning a $1 million prize, along with a black-and-gold trophy, a custom AEW wrestling belt, and a commemorative ring. Gibbs, the sixth seed, beat Ty Dillon in the five-race elimination challenge, finishing 21st while Dillon came in 28th. But here's the catch: Gibbs didn't take all the cash home. So what did he do with it? Ty Gibbs Vows to Donate $10,000 to Charity Following Big Win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway The 22-year-old dominated NASCAR's In-Season Tournament with speed, smart pit stops, and top-10 finishes. In the final, he faced surprise finalist Ty Dillon, the 32nd seed, who upset big names like Denny Hamlin and Brad Keselowski. However, the No. 10 Chevy driver struggled with car damage following a restart incident on Lap 56 and was three laps down in 28th. Dillon's dream run of knocking out Hamlin in the opening round at EchoPark Speedway and Keselowski at the Chicago Street Course ended in Indy, as Gibbs claimed the $1 million prize. However, Gibbs' classy post-race gesture and interview with TNT Sports were the talk of the town. 'Super cool. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 11 Foods That Help In Healing Knee Pain Naturally | Zen Life Mag Undo Very honored to be in this position. Thank you to all of NASCAR and TNT Sports for allowing us to be able to do this. It's awesome to win this and super cool to be in this position. A million bucks is a lot of money. I'm going to give $10,000 to wherever Ty Dillon wants to choose to give to charity.' He also added, 'I told the broadcast in the other show… our sponsor, SAIA, challenged Ty Dillon's sponsor; whoever loses gives ten thousand dollars for Toys for Tots. And I wanna put another ten on top of that. Wherever Ty Dillon wants it to go, it's his choice.' Gibbs was actually referring to a fun sponsor-driven side bet tied to the In-Season Challenge final, where the losing driver's sponsor would donate $10,000 to charity. Ty Dillon is in Good Spirits After Missing Out on $1 Million Prize While Ty Dillon was happy with Ty Gibbs' charitable gesture, it didn't soften the sting of narrowly missing out on the $1 million prize. In an interview with he reflected on his loss but was gracious in defeat. 'It's painful right now that we didn't win the whole thing. But it definitely doesn't overshadow how much this whole run has meant for us and our team, our sponsors. We're grateful, man. It's a good boost of energy. Hopefully, we'll finish out the year strong (he is currently in 32nd place) because of it. I believe in our team and what the future holds. So today was tough, but you know, this run has been really great and I appreciate it. ' Dillon's comments showed respect for the new In-Season Tournament format, which brought fresh energy to NASCAR's mid-season stretch. Despite driving for a smaller outfit like Kaulig Racing, Dillon got a rare month in the NASCAR spotlight.
