Teenage Aviator Detained After Landing in Antarctica, Chile Says

New York Times18 hours ago
A 19-year-old American content creator who was trying to fly solo to all seven continents was detained by the Chilean authorities this week after they said he had landed his plane on an island off Antarctica without authorization.
The teenager, Ethan Guo, said in an interview on Thursday that he was being housed at a Chilean base on King George Island, roughly 75 miles off the coast of Antarctica, as the case against him proceeds.
Chilean officials said on Thursday that although Mr. Guo had initially been detained, he was now free to leave the island as long as he remained in Chile until his case is resolved.
Mr. Guo had been documenting his journey around the world on TikTok, where he has more than 329,000 followers, and Instagram, where he has about 1.3 million followers.
Mr. Guo, who obtained his pilot's license at 17, was aiming to become the first person to fly solo in a small aircraft to all seven continents, according to his website, and was hoping to raise $1 million for cancer research.
Antarctica was the only continent where he had yet to land, he said. On Saturday at about 5:30 a.m., he took off from Punta Arenas, a city near the southern tip of Chile, with a flight plan indicating that he was going to fly over the city and land again in Punta Arenas, prosecutors said.

Couple ‘flew across the world' and shelled out thousands of dollars on destination wedding — turns out they were never invited

They were accidental wedding crashers. A flabbergasted couple flew 14 hours and shelled out over thousands of dollars to attend a destination wedding, only to realize after booking that they weren't on the guest list. 'We flew across the world for a wedding we technically weren't even part of,' Yasemin Sarli told People Magazine. Advertisement 4 'Once we realized we were essentially wedding-adjacent, we just pivoted. We were like, 'okay, secret vacation it is,'' said Sarli. Instagram/Yasemin Sarli The nuptial debacle reportedly went down in 2023, but Sarli only posted about it recently in a TikTok video, which has since amassed over 1.7 million views. Advertisement She and her then-boyfriend of two years had reportedly been excited to fly to Buenos Aires, Argentina — where the knot-tying ceremony of her beau's college buddies was. 'The wedding came up casually in conversations between my boyfriend and the groom,' Sarli told the Daily Mail. According to her, the groom had described the soiree as a 'small wedding with family and close friends,' which her BF had interpreted as 'you're definitely going.' However, despite receiving an early save-the-date text, the pair had never actually received an official wedding invite. Nonetheless, her former flame was so confident that they'd been invited that he 'booked everything.' He reportedly dropped $1,500 on round-trip flights and another $3,000 for five nights at a lavish hotel where they'd heard the other guests were staying, according to the outlet. Courtesy of Yasemin Sarli However, Sarli felt something was awry in the days leading up to the bash as they didn't receive any nuptial updates. 'The red flags started waving a few days before we left,' she fretted. 'There were no follow-up messages, no schedule, no 'can't wait to see you!'' 4 The couple reportedly shelled out over $4,500 on flights and accommodations. Instagram/Yasemin Sarli Advertisement That's when it dawned on her that they'd never actually been invited. However, by that point, it was too late to back out. The uninvited guests felt that it would be 'too awkward' to mention to the bride and groom at that point, plus canceling last minute meant losing a ton of money as the trip was non-refundable. 'Once we realized we were essentially wedding-adjacent, we just pivoted. We were like, 'okay, secret vacation it is,'' she declared. 'I was just happy to have uninterrupted time together.' 4 'At some point, it honestly felt like we were starring in our own mini secret spy movie — 'Mission: Avoid the Wedding Guests,'' said Sarli. TikTok/sarliunlimited So the couple jetted from Frankfurt, Germany, to the Argentinian capital in what would become an unintentional wedding crash for the ages. However, to avoid getting caught, the couple went 'undercover' to keep their unauthorized attendance under wraps. They avoided vacation updates on social media and even made sure to work around other guests' schedules. 'If we found out the wedding group was hanging by the pool, we stayed in our room or booked spa treatments,' said Sarli. 'We ate super early or super late to avoid dinner overlap. We even planned random day trips just to make sure we wouldn't randomly bump into anyone.' Advertisement Like matrimonial espionage agents, they even donned disguises so that guests couldn't identify them. 'At some point, it honestly felt like we were starring in our own mini secret spy movie — 'Mission: Avoid the Wedding Guests,'' said Sarli while reflecting on their surreptitious soiree. In retrospect, the unintentional crasher — who split with the guy shortly after the trip — said she's glad she embarked on the trip, which she described as 'chaotic, awkward, kind of tragic, and hilarious.' Sarli concluded that it was 'just one big misunderstanding that turned into a great story.'

7 Love Islanders who have left the UK as Patsy relocates because she's 'too embarrassed' to work 9 to 5 job

Season 11 Love Island star Patsy Field has revealed that she's planning to move to Australia, as she feels "too embarrassed" to look for a regular 9 to 5 job in the UK a year after appearing on the ITV2 dating show. Speaking in an interview, she said: "I probably will be looking for a job soon, but I'm planning on moving to Australia." She added to The Sun: "A year post-show… I don't know if it comes with a little bit of embarrassment of looking for a normal 9 to 5 job." Patsy wouldn't be the first Islander to pack up her bags and relocate to another country after taking part in the show. Over the years, we've seen many contestants ditch the UK for opportunities overseas. Here's a list of all the Love Islanders who've made the move. Season 11 star Patsy is the latest Islander to join the trend of moving abroad. In a recent interview, she was asked if she considers herself an influencer, to which she responded: "I don't think I'm a very good influencer…I guess at the moment, yeah, you could say influencing — or just fun-employed, I think is the term, isn't it?" She then went on to say that she's planning on moving to Australia to find a job, explaining: "I feel like if I move to the other side of the world and maybe find one over there, I might feel a bit better about it.' Prior to being on Love Island, Andrew worked as an estate agent in Dubai. He returned to the UK after his time on the show and moved in with his girlfriend at the time, Tasha Ghouri. However, since their split he has now returned to Dubai, calling the move a "new start". Season four star Laura Anderson relocated to Dubai with her then-partner Dane Bowers. She's since moved back to the UK and now has a daughter with actor Gary Lucy. She regularly visits Dubai, and took her 16-month-old daughter Bonnie on a trip there earlier this year. Season four star Eyal Booker moved to LA in 2019 with his then-girlfriend Delilah Belle Hamlin. While he still considers London to be his home, he spends a lot of his time stateside and last year he moved into a luxury apartment there with his best friend Max and his girlfriend. Season five star Anton moved to Dubai after appearing on Love Island. He originally went on a brand trip but fell in love with the city, so he splashed out on a Bentley and an apartment. He later returned home to Scotland, calling the decision a "mistake". Speaking in a video, he explained: "After Covid, I got invited on an influencer trip to Dubai. As soon as I got there, I absolutely fell in love with the place - and I never came home. "I bought myself a Bentley, I bought myself an apartment on The Palm and I was absolutely living the dream. Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there." Anton went on to explain how he invested £100,000 in a "gym concept", with plans to open a "nightclub gym". Season seven bombshell Abigail Rawlings has moved to US since appearing on Love Island. She works as a tattoo artist in LA, and judging from her Instagram page, she's having a pretty good time settling in there. Season two star Rachel Fenton returned to nursing after the reality TV show and she's since moved to Dubai, where she's continued her nursing career. New episodes of Love Island air on weekdays and Sundays on ITV2 at 9pm.

Teen pilot detained in Antarctica during solo fly attempt to 7 continents

(NewsNation) — A teenage American pilot has been detained in Antarctica during his quest to become the youngest pilot to fly to all seven continents, according to multiple reports. Ethan Guo, 19, has been accused by Chile of submitting a false flight plan and landing in Antarctica without permission. Buying a home? You'll need a $17K raise, Zillow finds Guo, who is from Memphis, Tennessee, was detained and charged with submitting a false flight plan before heading towards the South Pole on June 28, the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Prosecutor's Office said, according to The New York Post. Guo is also hoping to raise $1 million for cancer research on the voyage. British online newspaper The Independent reports that his brush with the Chilean authorities occurred on Saturday after he took off from the Chilean city of Punta Arenas. His Cessna 182Q aircraft was diverted and landed at an airfield in Chilean Antarctic territory. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
