Pakistani goods worth Rs 9 crore seized at Navi Mumbai port; one arrested
In an operation codenamed 'Operation Deep Manifest', the illegal import of Pakistani-origin goods routed through third countries, primarily via Dubai, UAE, has been busted, the Ministry of Finance said in a statement Thursday.
The goods being shipped into India were in blatant violation of import policy conditions and prohibitions imposed by the government on direct or indirect import or transit of Pakistani-origin goods.
The finance ministry said one of the partners of an importing firm was arrested on Thursday.
Following the Pahalgam terror attacks, the government had imposed a comprehensive ban, effective May 2, 2025, on the direct or indirect import or transit of goods originating in or exported from Pakistan.
Previously, such goods were subject to a 200 per cent customs duty.
Despite these stringent measures, some importers attempt to bypass the government policy by misdeclaring the origin of goods and by manipulating the related shipping documents, the finance ministry said.
'In two separate cases, these consignments were seized at Nhava Sheva port. The consignments were falsely declared as UAE-origin, masking their Pakistani origin. However, investigations revealed that these goods actually originated from Pakistan and were merely transshipped via Dubai for import into India,' the Ministry of Finance statement read.
Investigations revealed that the goods were initially transported from Pakistan to Dubai on one set of containers and vessels, and subsequently transferred to another set of containers and vessels bound for India.
Further examination of goods and analysis of documents gathered during investigations conducted so far uncovered cargo movement trails from Karachi port, Pakistan, and transshipments at Jabel Ali port, Dubai - en route to Indian ports.
Furthermore, money transfers/financial linkages with Pakistani entities were traced, raising serious concerns about illicit financial flows.
'The entire modus operandi was orchestrated through a complex web of transactions involving Pakistani and UAE nationals, aimed at obscuring the true origin of the goods, namely Pakistan,' the finance ministry added.
In the context of 'Operation Sindoor' and the prevailing heightened security environment, the DRI intensified its vigil through augmented intelligence gathering and data analytics to target consignments emanating from Pakistan. (ANI)

Suspended RAC constable held in '21 SI exam leak case
1 2 3 Jaipur: The Special Operations Group (SOG) of Rajasthan Police on Thursday arrested a 43-year-old suspended constable of the Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC). He was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to his arrest in connection with the 2021 Sub-Inspector (SI) recruitment exam paper leak case. ADG (SOG) VK Singh said the accused, identified as Shiv Singh, a resident of Sikar district and formerly posted with the 10th Battalion RAC in Bikaner, was absconding since his name surfaced in the paper leak conspiracy. According to the SOG, Shiv conspired with co-accused Sandeep Kumar Lata to procure and distribute leaked question papers in exchange for money. The duo allegedly helped two candidates—Surendra Kumar Bagdiya and Ravindra Singh—gain access to the leaked material ahead of the examination. Investigators said that Lata handed over the leaked question papers and answer keys to Ravindra Singh at his residence in Udaipur. Ravindra then passed the materials to Surendra Bagdiya, who later secured the third position in the final SI trainee merit list. Once sufficient evidence was collected against the accused, he went underground. An arrest warrant was issued against him by a Jaipur court in September last year. Subsequently, the SOG announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to his arrest.

9.33 lakh fine imposed on STP operator
Kanpur: Uttar Pradesh Pollution control board (UPPCB) recently imposed a fine of Rs 9.33 lakhs against KRMPL company which is operating two Sewage Treatment plant (STP) at Jajmau. Team of UPPCB's regional office inspected the STPs thrice in June- June 12, 18 and 23, and observed that effluent of 130 and 43 mld STP was flowing in the river Ganga. The operating agency did not use generators when there was a power cut. As a result, untreated effluent discharged into the river. The UPPCB apprised the situation to the operating company but company did not take any effective measures. Mohit Chak, project manager of Jal Nigam, said the fine amount would be deducted from the payment of operating company. tnn

Indore: What Indore does today, rest of India does tomorrow — making it a habit of propelling Smart and Swachh changes in laying foundations of the future, Indore again set an example for others to emulate — the local administration declared Indore as India's first beggar-free city, culminating a year-long campaign. This pioneering initiative, which focused on comprehensive rehabilitation, earned recognition from both Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and the World Bank. Indore collector Asheesh Singh on Thursday told TOI about achieving this significant milestone, noting that a year ago, approximately 5,000 beggars, including 500 children, were present on the city's streets. "The campaign we launched for the elimination of begging has itself become a model," Singh stated, highlighting its recognition by national and international bodies. Indore is one of 10 cities where the Union Ministry initiated a pilot project to eliminate begging under its "Bhiksha Vriti Mukta Bharat" (Begging-Free India) programme. He detailed the campaign's phased approach. "In the first phase, we ran an awareness campaign. Then the beggars were rehabilitated," he explained. To solidify the change, the city administration implemented a ban on begging and even giving money to beggars or purchasing anything from them. Violations of this ban can lead to the registration of FIRs and potential legal consequences, including imprisonment or fines. So far, around half-a-dozen FIRs were registered for such violations. Encouraging public participation, the administration offered a reward of Rs 1,000 for information about begging activities, and many citizens claimed this reward. "A dedicated helpline number was also launched, allowing citizens to report the presence of beggars via WhatsApp or other means, triggering the immediate dispatch of a rescue team to rehabilitation centres. Individuals found begging at intersections and on roads were relocated to these centres, where they were provided with accommodation and food. FIRs were also registered against beggars identified as coming from other states," he said. "At least 170 children, who were found engaged in begging, were given admission to schools, while around 30 small children were accommodated in different centres," he said. These teams also interacted with individuals who previously engaged in begging but are now self-sufficient through self-employment. "Besides, the Union govt has chosen Indore to hold a big conference under the SMILE (Support for Marginalized Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise) Project of the Social Justice Department on July 11. This conference will be based on making the country as beggar-free as Indore has already presented a model," he said. But, we have taken all the required measures including that education, rehablitation and even punishment to check it" he explained. WCD officials anticipate that the govt of India may soon issue guidelines for other cities to implement similar strategies, aiming to alleviate the problems caused by begging nationwide. Indore continues to work towards sustaining these efforts, ensuring a truly beggar-free environment for the long term.
