Hong Kong triathletes put friendships on hold as National Games selection gets serious

As Hong Kong's triathletes prepare to suspend friendships in the name of a National Games selection fight, head coach Andrew Wright admitted on Wednesday that it was not ideal for them to be 'training under one roof'.

The city team will have eight men and three women in Saturday's Chengdu World Triathlon Cup, which is doubling as a selection race for November's Games.
While Cade and Tallulah Wright have travelled to the mainland from Edinburgh, where they had university exams, the rest of the squad have been preparing cheek-by-jowl at the Hong Kong Sports Institute.
Wright said he had not noticed relationships growing frosty, but acknowledged 'there are some disadvantages' to them being in such proximity.
'Part of that is they get to see each other's training, which can be strange,' Wright said.

'They're teammates, so they have to get on and create a good environment, but it's an individual sport and they have to beat each other, so that's pretty hard.

Who is Yu Zidi, the Chinese 12-year-old making waves at World Aquatics Championships?

Yu Zidi could make history on Monday, when the 12-year-old sensation races for her first medal at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. Advertisement While Canadian world record holder Summer McIntosh, herself only 18 and an Olympic champion in the event, is the overwhelming favourite in the 200m individual medley final, Yu could become the youngest person to win a medal at an international event in 89 years. That accolade belongs to Denmark's Inge Sorensen, who won bronze less than a month after turning 12 at the 1936 Berlin Olympics in the women's 200m breaststroke. Even if Yu misses the podium on Monday, she still has the 200m butterfly and the 400m medley – her best event – to fall back on. The youngster could also be selected for the relays. Yu began to make waves in China in 2024, and within a year, she was among the fastest in the world in her three events. Hong Kong turn to ex-Sri Lanka Test player Kaushal Silva after trio of Malaysia thrashings

Former Sri Lanka wicketkeeper batsman Kaushal Silva has been appointed as the new head coach of Hong Kong's cricket team, the sport's governing body in the city said on Monday. The 39-year-old, who played 39 Tests and scored three hundreds between 2011 and 2018, is expected to start his new job sometime next month, once his visa has come through. After a short coaching stint in England, Silva has been working in Australia since 2019, most recently at the Superkings Cricket Academy, but will now make the step up to associate cricket as Simon Willis' replacement. Silva said he was excited at the prospect of coaching the team and 'looked forward to working with the talented group of players'. His first significant challenge, other than improving an underperforming side, will be the Asia Cup, which will return to its T20 format and be held in the United Arab Emirates from September 9th to September 28th. World Aquatics Championships: China claim trio of golds to continue diving dominance

China swept both diving finals to secure three gold medals at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore on Sunday, continuing their long-held dominance of the sport. There were two golds in the mixed synchronised 10-metre platform and another in the men's 1m springboard event. Zhu Yongxin and Xie Peiling, diving together at a major international meet for the first time, topped the mixed event with 323.04 points, finishing just ahead of North Korea's Choe Wi-hyon and Jo Jin-mi, who scored 322.98. The Chinese pair were ranked last out of 12 competitors after the first of five dives, but held steady to climb the rankings and took the top spot following their fourth dive. Neutral athletes Aleksandr Bondar and Anna Konanykhina claimed bronze with 311.88. 'This wasn't an easy win; it was a tough battle, and in the end, we won by just a tiny margin,' Zhu said. 'Looking back, I felt a bit nervous about how close it was. But ultimately, I'm really glad we managed to secure the victory.'
