Multiple Volvo models recalled
Volvo is recalling more than 500 plug-in hybrid and electric SUVs across its XC40, XC60 and XC90 lines due to an issue with their braking performance.
"Due to a software issue, there is a risk that the vehicle's braking performance may be temporarily disabled if the car has been coasting downhill for at least 1 minute and 30 seconds in 'B' mode (in the plug-in hybrid cars) or One Pedal Drive (in the pure electric cars)," the company says in its recall notice.
"A loss of braking performance could increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and/or other road users."
Volvo is fixing the issue with an over-the-air (OTA) software update.

CarExpert Choice winner: Best Luxury Small Car
The BMW 1 Series has been named Australia's best small luxury car in the inaugural 2025 CarExpert Choice Awards. It beat out the related Mini Cooper as well as the rival Audi A3, both of which were named finalists. The 1 Series hatch was redesigned for 2025, bringing not only a fresher look but also a significant tech overhaul. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. With front-wheel drive and a three-cylinder engine as standard, this mightn't sound like a traditional BMW. However, it offers traditional BMW strengths like excellent dynamics and an upscale look and feel. All 1 Series hatchbacks are enjoyable to drive, but the flagship all-wheel drive M135 xDrive is a genuine hot hatch. Not only does it have capable handling, but its powerful turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine sees it do the 0-100km/h dash in under five seconds. Lotus denies plans to close UK factory
British sports car maker Lotus has denied reports it is considering closing its only UK plant, and shifting to the US. Multiple publications, including the BBC, Automotive News and the Financial Times, are reporting Lotus is contemplating closing its plant in Hethel, about 20 minutes south of Norwich. Lotus and parent Geely initially refused to comment on the reports, but on Saturday Lotus put out an official press statement: 'Lotus Cars is continuing normal operations, and there are no plans to close the factory. We are actively exploring strategic options to enhance efficiency and ensure global competitiveness in the evolving market. 'We have invested significantly in R&D and operations in the UK, over the past six years. Lotus remains committed to the UK, and its customers, employees, dealers, suppliers, as well as its proud British heritage.' The company also said 'the UK is the heart of the Lotus brand', while also noting the UK is its 'largest commercial market in Europe'. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Supplied Credit: CarExpert Hethel, the company's only factory in the UK, currently produces the Emira coupe (below) for sale around the world. If Hethel is mothballed, Emira production may be moved to the Volvo's plant in Charleston, South Carolina, which currently underutilised. In a call with investors last week, Feng Qingfeng, CEO of Lotus Technology, said 'localisation [of production in US] is a feasible plan' given President Trump's constantly changing tariff policy on foreign-made cars. Production at Hethel has been paused to since mid-May to manage supply chain issues related to US tariffs, and a halt in shipment of Emiras to the US. The Financial Times believes closure of Hethel could happen as early as 2026, and would see around 1300 people lose their jobs. The company's growing losses saw it already fire 270 people in April this year, following on from multiple rounds of job cuts over the last few years. Despite those job losses, Geely and Lotus said they were committed to the UK. Supplied Credit: CarExpert Moving production from the UK to Volvo's plant in the US would allow Lotus to avoid the wildly fluctuating tariff situation in the US, one of the brand's key markets. Earlier this year President Trump announced tariffs on UK-built cars would rise from 2.5 per cent to 25 per cent, but this was quickly dropped to 10 per cent, but only for the first 100,000 vehicles per year, after the two nations completed a trade deal. Founded in 1952 by Colin Chapman, the company's ethos of simplifying and adding lightness has seen it produce many celebrated sports cars, but the firm has teetered on a financial knife-edge for decades. After Chapman's death, Lotus has been successively owned by GM, Romano Artioli (who at the time also owned Bugatti), and Malaysian automaker Proton. Current ownership of the storied sports car brand is a little complicated. Chinese automaker Geely — which also owns Volvo, Polestar, Lynk & Co, Zeekr, LEVC and Smart — bought a 51 per cent of Lotus from Proton in 2017. Supplied Credit: CarExpert Geely then split the brand in two, with UK-based Lotus Cars responsible for the marque's sports cars, and a new firm Lotus Technology, based in Wuhan, China, in charge of expanding the brand into electric SUVs and sedans. In February 2024 Lotus Technology was floated by merging with a special purpose acquisition company backed by LVMH, the luxury conglomerate that owns Louis Vuitton, Moët & Chandon, Dior, Bulgari, TAG Heuer, and many others. This April, the companies announced Lotus Technology would buy out Geely's 51 per cent stake in Lotus. Supplied Credit: CarExpert Supplied Credit: CarExpert Although the brand's new EVs helped grow the brand's sales to 12,134 last year — a 74 per cent increase over 2023 — Lotus Technology has bled hundreds of millions of dollars in red ink, and its shares are down 84 per cent. Last year the 6862 Chinese-made Eletre SUVs and Emeya sedans (above) found new homes, while sales of the Emira were up 102 per cent to 5272. If Lotus does end manufacturing in Britain, it will follow other car makers in closing factories in the UK. In March this year Vauxhall closed its Luton factory, which once made Bedford vehicles, and most recently made the Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro, Citroen Dispatch, and its many siblings. Prior to this Honda closed its Swindon plant in 2021, and Ford closed its engine factory in Bridgend, Wales in 2020. MORE: Everything Lotus

Refreshed Volvo XC60 get tech upgrade
Just when you thought the Volvo XC60 SUV couldn't get any better, the face-lifted 2026 model range has been revealed and priced for Australia with refreshed looks, new cabin materials and the brand's latest infotainment system. Inside, that means, a bigger 11.2-inch, free-standing central touchscreen with the latest software and, according to Volvo, 21 per cent increased pixel density for a crisper display. Additionally, Volvo says the new infotainment system with Google built-in is more than twice as fast as the outgoing unit, with 10 times faster graphics generation thanks to next-generation Snapdragon Cockpit Platform processing from Qualcomm Technologies. Best of all, every new Volvo coming out of the Chinese-owned Swedish brand's factories will have this new UX — while older models will get it on cars built as early as 2020 via an over-the-air-update later this year. This includes the C40, XC40, EX40, EC40, S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, XC60, S90, V90, V90 Cross Country and XC90 with Android operating system. Interior upgrades include Quilted Nordico upholstery, refreshed interior decors and inlays, 'smart' storage, new cup holders, an improved wireless phone charger and a more versatile and roomy load compartment. Volvo claims the XC60 is even more comfortable and quiet than before — and comes with optional air suspension. Exterior updates include a new grille, like the one on the recent XC90, new wheel options, darker rear lights and three new exterior paint finishes: Forest Lake, Aurora Silver and Mulberry Red. There are four variants — all all-wheel drive — in the range: XC60 Plus B5 Bright, XC60 Ultra B5 Dark, XC60 Plus T8 Plug-in Hybrid Dark and XC60 Ultra T8 Plug-in Hybrid Dark. The Plus B5 Bright and the Ultra B5 Dark have a 183kW/350Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with mild-hybrid tech, while both T8 Plug-in Hybrid variants get a 233 kW/400Nm four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with 48-volt e-boost tech and 107kW/309Nm electric motor sending power to rear wheels. Standard features include power adjustable front seats with memory, integrated child booster cushions in the rear seat, a crystal gear lever selector, head-up display, 360-degree camera, blind-spot information system and, of course, Volvo's signature LED Thor's Hammer headlights. + XC60 Plus B5 Bright: $74,990 + XC60 Ultra B5 Dark: $81,990 + XC60 Plus T8 Plug-in Hybrid Dark: $92,990 + Volvo XC60 Ultra T8 Plug-in Hybrid Dark: $101,990 With more than 2.7 million cars sold, the Volvo XC60 has surpassed the iconic Volvo 240 as the bestselling Volvo model ever. The Volvo 240 was produced between 1974 and 1993 with 2,685,171 cars built during that time. It was among the first cars to incorporate enhanced side-impact protection, which later evolved into Volvo's patented Side-Impact Protection System. Additionally, the introduction of the child booster cushion in 1978 marked a world-first innovation.
