Zuckerberg says Meta will invest hundreds of billions in superintelligence

CNA6 hours ago
Mark Zuckerberg said on Monday that Meta Platforms would spend hundreds of billions of dollars on computing power to build superintelligence, intensifying his pursuit of a technology he has chased with a talent war for top AI engineers.
The announcement comes as tech giants such as Meta aggressively chase high-profile acquisitions and offer multi-million-dollar pay packages to attract top talent in the race to lead the next wave of artificial intelligence.
"We have the capital from our business to do this," Zuckerberg said in a post on Threads.
The Facebook and Instagram parent has recently unveiled its new division, Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), to unify the company's AI efforts, following setbacks with its Llama 4 model and key staff departures.
The MSL will be led by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and ex-GitHub chief Nat Friedman, after Meta invested US$14.3 billion in Scale and ramped up efforts to recruit top AI talent.

OraSure Technologies received takeover bid from industry entrepreneur, sources say

NEW YORK :Prominent healthcare entrepreneur Ron Zwanziger approached medical device maker OraSure Technologies with a takeover offer, three people familiar with the matter said, in what would mark more consolidation in the heavily fragmented diagnostic industry. In June, Zwanziger submitted an unsolicited all-cash proposal to buy the Bethlehem, Pennsylvania-headquartered company, known for its COVID-19 rapid antigen tests, the sources said. Along with a prominent Wall Street investor and others - people the sources did not identify - Zwanziger proposed paying between $3.50 and $4.00 a share for OraSure. OraSure's stock was trading aT $3.18 on Monday morning, leaving it with a market capitalization of $238.6 million. The company's board rejected the offer not long after it was sent, without any discussions between the parties, the three sources said. A company representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A representative for Zwanziger, a serial deal maker who cemented his reputation through at-home blood glucose testing, could not be reached for comment. Zwanziger has built and sold a handful of diagnostic companies during his long career, and sold diagnostic test manufacturer Alere Abbott Laboratories in 2017 for around $5.3 billion. The rebuffed offer for OraSure was his second effort to combine with the company, according to one of the sources. In 2022, only a few months after the company named Carrie Eglinton Manner as its chief executive officer, Zwanziger proposed a merger through a stock swap, but terms could not be reached, the source said. OraSure appealed to Zwanziger because of its solid core technology and he thought he could turn around the company's fortunes quickly with a new team, the sources said. The company's stock price has fallen 27 per cent in the last 12 months and is off 77 per cent over the last five years. Quarterly revenue has been dropping since early 2023 as COVID-19 era sales dried up. OraSure has been attempting to diversify its business as a result, buying Sherlock Biosciences late last year for its molecular diagnostics platform. Point of care diagnostic companies offer accurate results in real time to measure cholesterol, and detect flu and pregnancy, for example. But the industry still remains highly fragmented with companies such as Danaher, Siemens, Roche and Thermo Fisher Scientific capturing the biggest market share.

Cognition AI to buy Windsurf, doubling down on AI-driven coding

Artificial intelligence startup Cognition AI on Monday agreed to acquire Windsurf, an integrated development environment platform, strengthening its position in the rapidly evolving enterprise software market. The deal follows Google's $2.4 billion deal with Windsurf last week aimed at acquiring top talent and securing licensing rights to its technology. The deal with Google marks a win for Windsurf's backers, who have raised $243 million from investors including Kleiner Perkins, Greenoaks, and General Catalyst, and was last valued at $1.25 billion one year ago, according to PitchBook. The move reflects a broader trend among technology giants such as Alphabet and Meta, which are making bold, high-value acquisitions and offering lucrative compensation packages to secure leading industry talent amid intensifying competition in the AI sector. The deal with Cognition covers Windsurf's intellectual property, product line, brand, and business operations, as well as its highly regarded engineering, product, and go-to-market teams. While the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, Windsurf brings with it $82 million in annual recurring revenue and a customer base of more than 350 enterprises. "Among all the teams in the AI space, Cognition was literally the one we have respected the most, and they are a perfect fit to bring Windsurf to the next phase," Jeff Wang, Windsurf's interim chief executive officer, said in an email to employees. In the immediate term, Windsurf will continue to operate independently, with Cognition pledging significant investment to integrate Windsurf's technology and unique assets into its own product suite, including its flagship autonomous agent, Devin. Earlier, Windsurf had been engaged in months-long discussions with OpenAI regarding a potential acquisition that could have valued the company at $3 billion, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters in June.

Meta's Zuckerberg pledges hundreds of billions for AI data centres in superintelligence push

Find out what's new on ST website and app. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg touted the strength in the company's core advertising business to justify the massive spending. Mark Zuckerberg said on July 14 that Meta Platforms would spend hundreds of billions of dollars to build several massive AI data centres for superintelligence, intensifying his pursuit of a technology he has chased with a talent war for top engineers. The social media giant is among the large tech companies that have struck high-profile deals and doled out multi-million-dollar pay packages in recent months to fast-track work on machines that could outthink humans on many tasks. Its first multi-gigawatt data centre, dubbed Prometheus, is expected to come online in 2026, while another, called Hyperion, will be able to scale up to 5 gigawatts over the coming years, Mr Zuckerberg said in a post on his Threads social media platform. 'We're building multiple more titan clusters as well. Just one of these covers a significant part of the footprint of Manhattan,' the billionaire CEO said. He also pointed to a report from industry publication SemiAnalysis that Meta was on track to be the first AI lab to bring a gigawatt-plus supercluster online. Mr Zuckerberg touted the strength in the company's core advertising business to justify the massive spending amid investor concerns on whether the expenditure would pay off. 'We have the capital from our business to do this,' he said. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. The stock has risen more than 20 per cent so far this year. The company, which generated nearly US$165 billion (S$211 billion) in revenue last year, reorganised its AI efforts last month under a division called Superintelligence Labs after setbacks for its open-source Llama 4 model and key staff departures. It is betting that the division would generate new cash flows from the Meta AI app, image-to-video ad tools and smart glasses. Top members of the unit have considered abandoning Behemoth, the company's most powerful open-source AI model, in favour of developing a closed alternative, the New York Times reported separately on July 14. D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria said Meta was investing aggressively in AI as the technology has already boosted its ad business by allowing it to sell more ads and at higher prices. 'But at this scale, the investment is more oriented to the long-term competition to have the leading AI model, which could take time to materialise,' Mr Luria said. In recent weeks, Mr Zuckerberg has personally led an aggressive talent raid for the Meta Superintelligence Labs, which will be led by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and ex-GitHub chief Nat Friedman, after Meta invested US$14.3 billion in Scale. Meta had raised its 2025 capital expenditure to between US$64 billion and US$72 billion in April, aiming to bolster the company's position against rivals OpenAI and Google. REUTERS
