‘That's India's problem to deal with': Ben Stokes on Bumrah's workload management
After suffering a stress fracture in his back in the final Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where Bumrah wreaked havoc on the Aussie batters, Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill had confirmed that the spearhead will only play three out of the five Tests due to workload management.
When asked, in the pre-match conference, if England got an advantage from India's decision to announce publicly that Bumrah will only play three games heading into the series, Stokes replied, 'That's India's problem to deal with. I'm the captain of England. Let India decide what they want to do and what they want to say publicly.'
The England skipper has come into the English summer on the back of a long lay-off. Stokes had been out of action since tearing his left hamstring during the final Test in New Zealand in December 2024. After undergoing surgery in January, Stokes returned to take the captaincy when England hosted Zimbabwe in a four-day Test at Trent Bridge.
A previous injury in the same region, sustained while playing in The Hundred last August, had ruled out Stokes from three home Tests against Sri Lanka and one away game in Pakistan.
The England captain joked that he was a 'shadow of his former self' after the Headingley Test, but is ready for the second Test now.
'I feel better now than I did on Thursday and Friday. I think everyone was very tired from that week. It was a big week; we were in the field and bowled four out of five days.
'I used the three days after that game to offer absolutely nothing to the world. I was a shadow of my normal self. That just goes to show how much a five-day Test match takes out of you. I was pretty tired, but all over that now and ready to go tomorrow,' he added.

"Cannot Pick And Choose": Ex-India Star Slams Jasprit Bumrah For Missing 2nd Test vs England
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has slammed ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah for missing the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Pointing out Bumrah's absence, Pathan said that he could not "pick and choose" on which match to play in a bid to manage his workload. The Indian team decided to rest the right-arm pacer for the game, considering that it is a five-match Test series in England. Ahead of the tour, India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar had already mentioned that Bumrah would not play all the five matches. "If you are selected in the Indian team, you cannot pick and choose (which match to play) to manage your workload," Pathan said on Sony Sports. "There is no other bowler like him, he is world-class. But here, you are not missing the match because of injury but for workload management. "Now Akash Deep will take his place and be expected to do well as soon as he comes in - and maybe he does - but any bowler needs time to settle in. That continuity is needed." Right-arm pacer Akash Deep got included in India's playing XI for Edgbaston Test in place of Bumrah. India made two other changes as Washington Sundar and N itish Reddy were roped in for Sai Sudharsan and Shardul Thakur. Pathan further spoke on India's dependency on veteran pacers Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. The latter has not been selected for the ongoing tour of England. "This is why I have been saying that Indian cricket has to start thinking about playing without Bumrah and (Mohammed) Shami. They have to start planning for playing without them in Test cricket," said Pathan. "The main fast bowler of the lineup cannot play all five Tests overseas, so firstly, India don't have Bumrah's services throughout the series, and secondly, his replacement, a younger player, is only getting a chance to play when he doesn't. So he does not have stability. "This is the only overseas five-match series of the new World Test Championship cycle. This was the series in which Bumrah was needed most. If he had a niggle or an injury, I would understand. But just to manage his workload? Then I don't think this is coming to India's advantage," Pathan added.

‘You don't want to hear from me': Watch Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ben Stokes exchange heated words during IND vs ENG 2nd Test
Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and England captain Ben Stokes shared a few words in the middle during the India vs England 2nd Test at Edgbaston on Wednesday. The incident happened during India's batting when Jaiswal was completing a run with Stokes saying something to the Indian batter when he reached the non-striker's end. To which Jaiswal replied, 'You don't want to hear from me, come on.' The matter stopped there before it reignited in the same over with Stokes again saying something to Jaiswal to rile the batter up. However, that wouldn't do much to rattle the batter with Jaiswal reaching 50 in the very next over. Stokes, meanwhile, would finally get his man in the 46th over when Jaiswal tried to play a cut, got a faint edge and was gobbled up by Jamie Smith behind the stumps. Some heated JAISBALL 🆚 BAZBALL on display! 👀#ENGvIND 👉 2nd Test, Day 1 | LIVE NOW on JioHotstar ➡ — Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) July 2, 2025 Elsewhere, captain Shubman Gill looked comfortable in the middle alongside his deputy Rishabh Pant on another good batting surface in the five-match series. Stokes, who has a knack of picking up wickets out of nowhere, had Jaiswal caught behind off a short and wide delivery. Jaiswal perhaps went too hard at the ball only to offer a simple catch to Jamie Smith behind stumps. With not much happening in the session, the English fans in the iconic Eric Hollies Stand sporadically made plenty of noise to push the home team. India added 84 runs in 28 wickets in the session for the loss of Jaiswal. In the 34th over, Gill survived a DRS lbw call off a Brydon Carse nip backer due to an inside edge. Against the sole spinner Shoaib Bashir, Gill stepped out from time to time and on one occasion dispatched him over extra cover. Pant joined him late in the session and took his time to settle down before using his feet against Bashir for a six over mid-on. Earlier, Jaiswal maintained his aggression despite being tested by the England pacers while Karun Nair (31 off 50) showed promise at number three before being dismissed late in the morning session. Considering the overhead conditions, Stokes opted to bowl but Jaiswal and Nair did well to survive the tough period. In the first hour, KL Rahul (2 off 26), played on to the stumps off a Chris Woakes delivery before Jaiswal-Nair duo added 80 for the second wicket. (With agency inputs)
