Aircraft Propeller Service opens state-of-the-art MRO facility in Selangor
The world-class MRO centre reinforces APS' long-term commitment to the Asia-Pacific region, the world's largest market for turboprop aircraft.
The facility in Selangor is APS's first in Asia and adds to its existing global footprint in the United States and Brazil. APS is the only MRO company in Asia and the Americas licensed to perform original equipment manufacturer-proprietary 568F propeller repairs under an agreement with Collins Aerospace, the propeller manufacturer.
The US Federal Aviation Authority and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia have both certified the new facility
with EASA and other country approvals to follow soon.
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari opened the new MRO facility along with APS CEO Daniel Colbert and APS Asia Pacific managing director Fergus Lopez.
'I am delighted that APS has chosen Selangor to be its home in Asia Pacific. This will be music to the ears of companies in the industry of airlines and airports in the region, especially the likes of ATR, Airbus and Embraer operating short-haul routes. APS's decision to set up shop in Selangor has taken the state's goal of being the gateway to Asean to a whole new level, representing their belief that Selangor has the economic landscape and dynamic talent to take up these jobs, and I'm confident that young Selangorians will stand to benefit through the many job opportunities this MRO facility will offer,' said Amiruddin.
The 30,096-square-foot facility includes a temperature- and humidity-controlled factory floor and a three-storey administrative office. It will provide full in-house MRO capabilities for ATR 42/72 and Airbus C295 propellers, with plans to introduce further MRO capabilities over time.
Colbert noted: 'This MRO centre represents more than a geographic expansion. It is a strategic investment in workforce development and technical excellence, and a commitment to be close to our customers. By combining our proprietary expertise with Malaysia's skilled talent pool, we are building a center of excellence in Asia Pacific for propeller MRO to support operators in this part of the world.'
Twenty of APS Malaysia's 30 employees have already completed APS's rigorous training in the US and Brazil, gaining certifications in complex inspections and original equipment manufacturer-authorised repair techniques. In addition, each of these trainees has completed 31 mandatory technical courses to ensure compliance with global performance standards.
Lopez said: 'Our Asia-Pacific operation meets the same world-class standards as our facilities in Brazil and the US. This achievement reflects the dedication of our Malaysian team, who have gone through very comprehensive technical training.'
Meanwhile, Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) CEO Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid remarked, 'APS's decision to establish its first MRO facility in Asia-right here in Malaysia underscores our nation's growing role in the global aerospace ecosystem. This strategic investment aligns perfectly with our New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and marks another step forward in Malaysia's transformation into a high-tech, innovation-driven economy.

Asia-Pacific accounts for 37% of the global ATR fleet and is projected to require nearly 1,000 additional 50-70 seat commercial turboprop aircraft over the next two decades. By establishing this facility in Malaysia, APS is strategically positioned to support this growth while reducing turnaround times and improving service efficiency for regional customers.

Consumers may face price hikes
PETALING JAYA: Consumers in the Klang Valley and Putrajaya may face higher costs for goods and services following the water rate hike next month. Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association president Datuk Jawahar Ali Taib Khan said although the hike is 'clear and fair', it would lead to higher operational costs for some businesses. He said small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are expecting to see their monthly water bills increase by between RM5,000 and RM9,000. 'Those in the restaurant, laundry and manufacturing sectors will definitely be affected. 'And some industries may pass on costs to consumers, resulting in price hikes of between 3% and 7%,' he said yesterday. On Friday, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced a two-tier water tariff structure for domestic users, along with separate rates for non-domestic users, including data centres. It was estimated that businesses, commercial entities and non-domestic buildings would see an increase of RM0.57 for each cubic metre of water. Households in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya will see an increase of between RM0.30 and RM0.88 per cubic metre of water depending on the volume of usage. Free water worth RM13 per month will continue to be provided to 337,851 accounts under the Darul Ehsan Water Scheme. Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) secretary-general Dr Saravanan Thambirajah acknowledged the need for water tariff increases but noted that it could add further pressure on the cost of living. He called on the relevant enforcement authorities to monitor businesses to prevent them from using the water tariff hike as an excuse to disproportionately increase prices. On the higher water rates for data centres, Saravanan said Fomca supported the move. 'This sends a strong signal for data centres to invest in more efficient cooling systems and water recycling technologies. 'It ensures that the costs of such heavy usage are not indirectly borne by ordinary consumers,' he said. Under the new tariff rates, data centres will be charged RM5.31 per cubic metre of usage.

Selangor keeps water tariff at RM6.50 for domestic users
SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government has confirmed that domestic water tariffs for households consuming up to 20 cubic metres per month will remain unchanged at 65 sen per cubic metre, with the minimum charge staying at RM6.50. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari stated that this decision follows the February 2024 adjustment and aligns with the National Water Services Commission's (SPAN) approved rates. Amirudin explained that the revision supports efforts to enhance water reserves and replace aging asbestos pipes. 'This adjustment allows Air Selangor to replace over 1,600 kilometres of pipes, some over 40 years old, at a rate of 300 kilometres annually,' he said. For households using 20–35 cubic metres monthly, the rate will rise by RM0.30 to RM1.62 per cubic metre. Those exceeding 35 cubic metres will pay RM3.51 per cubic metre, an RM0.88 increase. Condominiums and government quarters will see a RM0.41 hike to RM2.09 per cubic metre. Low-cost housing residents face the smallest increase—RM0.10 per cubic metre—bringing the rate to RM1.18. Commercial users will pay RM3.51 per cubic metre, up RM0.57, while places of worship and welfare institutions enjoy a minimal RM0.10 rise to RM0.76. The shipping industry's rate will increase to RM8.01 per cubic metre, and data centres will pay RM5.31. The new tariffs take effect on September 1. Amirudin added that Air Selangor is constructing new treatment plants in Rasau and Labohan Dagang 2, costing RM7.671 billion and RM479.52 million, respectively. These projects will boost daily treated water capacity by 2,730 million litres. The state will also expand the Skim Air Darul Ehsan (SADE) eligibility, raising the household income threshold from RM5,000 to RM6,000 monthly. Raja Muda of Selangor honours entrepreneurs at PLATS Awards Night
KLANG: Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, graced the Platform Selangor (PLATS) Awards Night (MAPS) to recognise the achievements of local entrepreneurs. The event highlighted the success of participants in the U-PLATS Digital and U-PLATS Halal programmes. Accompanied by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and other dignitaries, Tengku Amir Shah presented awards to 22 entrepreneurs. The U-PLATS Digital awards included categories such as Main Micro Entrepreneur, Special Category Awards (Community, Youth, Revolution, Technology, Innovation, and Women), and best micro entrepreneur at the local authority level. Meanwhile, the U-PLATS Halal awards recognised participants who obtained the Malaysian Halal Confirmation Certificate. Award recipients received Point of Sales (POS) systems and training worth RM4,000 to enhance their business operations. Additionally, 10 entrepreneurs under the U-PLATS Halal programme received RM5,000 in sponsorship, with four already securing halal certification and four others in the approval process. During his speech, Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari highlighted that over 8,000 micro traders have benefited from PLATS programmes, gaining digitalisation access, training, and financial support.
