Darren Sproles' 72-yard punt return TD is the Saints Play of the Day
We're on Day 72 in our countdown to the New Orleans Saints' 2025 season opener, which means our pick for the Saints Play of the Day is this 72-yard punt return touchdown from Darren Sproles. He started his Saints career and the team's 2011 season with a bang against the Green Bay Packers, rallying New Orleans back to life after they fell into a 21-10 hole in Week 1. You can see Sproles stun the Packers for yourself here.
It was a moment of vindication after everyone spent the offseason talking about how great a fit Sproles would be in Sean Payton's offense, catching passes from Drew Brees and running routes that linebackers hadn't seen before. It was just a little surprising that neither Payton nor Brees were involved with this play. Sproles caught the punt with room to run, then he found a lane through the heart of the Green Bay coverage unit. Then he was gone.
While his time in New Orleans was short-lived (just 44 games across three years), Sproles proved to be one of the better free agent pickups of the Payton-Brees era. He racked up 3,048 yards from scrimmage and scored 21 touchdowns as a runner and receiver, gaining more yards and scoring more TD's than he did with either the San Diego Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles. He chipped in 871 punt return yards and 1,827 kick return yards with the Saints, too, proving to be a player who could threaten the defense any time the ball was in his hands.
This touchdown wasn't enough to turn the tide against Green Bay -- the Packers stopped Sproles' rookie teammate Mark Ingram II at the goal line to get away with a 42-34 win -- but the 2011 season proved to be, arguably, the greatest regular season in franchise history. Sproles led the league in all-purpose yards with Brees setting a new record for single-season passing yards, plus a career-high 46 touchdown passes. New Orleans paced the NFL in a variety of offensive categories while looking like a worthy follow-up to the 2009 Super Bowl team. It's a shame their year didn't end with another championship, but we'll always have these memories.

Seahawks select offensive lineman in 2014 NFL redraft
2. Rams - Mike Evans4. Browns - Khalil MackRedrafting the 2014 NFL Draft using PFF grades and data 📊 The Seattle Seahawks did make a first-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft. The Seahawks were fresh off capturing their first championship in the franchise's 38 years history after defeating the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. GM John Schneider traded the No. 32 overall selection in the follow-up draft to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for Minnesota's second-and-fourth round picks (40th &108th). Seattle then traded down again, from No. 40 to 45, and made wide receiver Paul Richardson their first selection of the 2014 NFL draft. That proved to be a mistake. Richardson endured a disappointing four-year career with the Seahawks. After a teasing breakout campaign in 2017, the final year of his rookie contract, he signed a lucrative deal with Washington in free agency (and went on to disappoint again). The 2014 draft was a disappointing one for the Seahawks in general. Joining Richardson as the franchise's other top-100 pick was offensive tackle Justin Britt. Cassius Marsh and Kevin Norwood were among the other selections in the class. Remember them? As we all anxiously await training camp to start, Pro Football Focus recently conducted a 2014 NFL redraft. Always a fun exercise, PFF has the Seahawks keeping the 32nd pick this time around. They land offensive guard Trai Turner, who was actually taken in the third round. "Five-time Pro Bowler Trai Turner rounds out this redraft due to his solid stretch of play in Carolina, where he spent his first six seasons," PFF wrote. "Turner earned a 76.3 PFF overall grade in that span while contributing to some of the best Panthers teams in recent memory. Turner's best season came amid the Panthers' Super Bowl run in 2015, when he ranked as a top-eight guard in the NFL in PFF overall grade and PFF pass-blocking grade." Considering the offensive line struggles the Seahawks would encounter, Turner would have been a far better selection.

Commanders Owner Heading For Inevitable ‘Emotional Conflict of Interest'
Commanders Owner Heading For Inevitable 'Emotional Conflict of Interest' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Conflicts of interest - of the emotional sort - can arise when professional sports owners buy multiple teams in different leagues. Advertisement Los Angeles Rams owner Stan Kroenke has majority control of the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche. His work out west isn't too much of a conflict of interest, though. The same cannot be said for Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris. Harris purchased control of the Commanders in 2023, following his acquisitions of the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA and the New Jersey Devils in the NHL. Now, Harris is expected to control the new Philadelphia sports franchise in the WNBA in 2030. "Philadelphia, the W's coming. Let's go, this is awesome," Harris said Monday in a statement. "To the city of Philly, this is your team. Philadelphia is a city about sports, and basketball in particular, including generations of extraordinary women's basketball talent, athletes who have shaped the game and inspired countless others." Advertisement As excited as Harris may be about bringing the WNBA to Philadelphia, it's easy to see how this could be a conflict of interest in the eyes of fans who are loyal to their cities. The Philadelphia Eagles are considered the top team in that city, and Harris' Commanders are one of their biggest rivals. That might leave a sour taste in the mouth of several Philly fans. It came to a head during the Eagles' run to Super Bowl LIX. After defeating Harris' Commanders in the NFC Championship Game, the 76ers were the lone team in the city to NOT congratulate the Eagles on a Super Bowl appearance. It was an apparent 'emotional conflict of interest' then, and Harris' purchase of a WNBA team won't change that now. Advertisement From a business perspective? It's all good. But we understand why some passionate fans might see it as a bad look when the involved cities are entangled in a 'sports hate' for each other. Jayden Daniels' Commanders Own One 'Significant Advantage' In Super Bowl Chase
Jayden Daniels' Commanders Own One 'Significant Advantage' In Super Bowl Chase originally appeared on Athlon Sports. One year. That's all it took for Dan Quinn and Jayden Daniels to change the trajectory of the Washington Commanders. Yes, Adam Peters and owner Josh Harris played their roles too, but Quinn and Daniels brought it to life. Advertisement A 12-5 record and an NFC Championship appearance is a superb first act, but the problem with that is it is a tough one to follow up. But Peters has done his best to make sure the Commanders get a decent shot at replicating last year's efforts, trading for Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil. The vibe is now different in the nation's capital, and for good reason, with Daniels showing to be every bit the franchise star the organization wanted him to be. And because of that, Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer thinks the franchise's future is in good hands. "The Commanders may not win 12 games or go to the NFC title game, as they did last season," Breer said. "However, the team-building efforts of Dan Quinn and Adam Peters, who have brought in players such as Marshon Lattimore, Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil at premium positions, has been impressive. Having Jayden Daniels will also give them a significant advantage moving forward. The future is very bright in D.C." Advertisement Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn (L) and quarterback Jayden Daniels (5). Geoff Burke-Imagn Images As the ready for a Super Bowl chase? Some see a regression coming, and let's face it, a 12-5 season and championship appearance is a tough thing to achieve consistently, but the Commanders have as good a shot as anyone to do it. Daniels, along with Deebo, Terry McLaurin, Zach Ertz, a solid offensive line, and run game, give offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury some serious weapons to play with. If Jayden can avoid the dreaded sophomore slump, Washington will be in business in the NFC and Super Bowl races. And even if they stumble in 2025, the franchise is well-placed to be around the rim for the foreseeable future thanks to nailing their draft selection of Daniels.
