Brownmiller, author of the landmark rape book dies
Brownmiller, who had been ill, died on Saturday at a New York hospital, according to Emily Jane Goodman, a retired New York State Supreme Court justice.
"She was an active feminist; she was not one to just agree with the popular issue of the day," said Goodman, whose friendship with Brownmiller spanned decades.
A journalist, anti-war protester and civil rights activist before joining the second wave feminist movement in its formative years, Brownmiller was among many women who were radicalised in the '60s and '70s and part of the smaller circle that included Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan and Kate Millett.
While activists of the early 20th century focused on voting rights, second-wave feminism transformed conversations about sex, marriage, reproductive rights, workplace harassment and domestic violence.
Brownmiller, as much as anyone, opened up the discussion of rape.
Against Our Will: Men, Women and Rape, published in 1975 and widely read and taught for decades after, documented the roots, prevalence and politics of rape.
She denounced the glorification of rape in popular culture, contended that rape was an act of violence, not lust, and traced rape to the very foundations of human history.
"Man's structural capacity to rape and woman's corresponding structural vulnerability are as basic to the physiology of both our sexes as the primal act of sex itself," she wrote.
In her 1999 memoir In Our Time, Brownmiller likened the writing of Against Our Will to "shooting an arrow into a bull's-eye in very slow motion."
It was a book that Brownmiller started in the early 1970s, after hearing stories from friends that made her shriek with dismay.
The title was chosen as a main selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club and considered newsworthy enough for Brownmiller to be interviewed on the Today show by Barbara Walters.
In 1976, Time magazine placed her picture on its cover, along with Billie Jean King, Betty Ford and nine others as Women of the Year.
Brownmiller's book inspired survivors to tell their stories, women to organise rape crisis centres and helped lead to the passage of marital rape laws.

Karl Stefanovic left speechless after Bec Judd's X-rated remarks on live TV
All decorum went out the window on the Today show this morning, with Karl Stefanovic left floundering for words after Bec Judd's X-rated confession. Promoting her new podcast Vain-ish, the Melbourne-based influencer sat down for an interview with Stefanovic and Sarah Abo on the Nine breakfast show alongside her co-host Jess Roberts. The pair are on a quest to banish the smoke and mirrors surrounding cosmetic procedures and treatments, vowing to come clean on their show about what work they get done, while also interviewing doctors to debunk or verify the latest beauty crazes. Talking about some of the procedures they've trialled, from salmon sperm facials to placenta encapsulation, Judd said their next episode would unpack Roberts' recent experience having a yoni steam. Unprompted, Roberts proceeded to say, 'It's where you steam your fanny.' The blunt remark prompted fits of giggles from the pair, as well as Abo, while Stefanovic pulled a horrified expression, stopping short of wading into the topic. It took the father-of-four about a minute to intervene, asking Judd if her husband, retired AFL legend Chris Judd, had ever 'gone for a fanny rejuvenation treatment.' 'No, we left the yoni steam for Jess,' Judd responded. 'Because he (Chris) goes, 'please you've already done the salmon sperm facial, can you not be the one who also steams her yoni publicly.'' Stefanovic cheekily wrapped the interview, saying, 'You had me at yoni.' It comes after another rogue segment made headlines on the Today show last month, with retired NRL player Aaron Woods unwittingly exposing his manhood on-air. Woods had earlier made a bet with Stefanovic vowing to do a nudie run if NSW lost State of Origin game two. And after the Blues lost to Queensland in Perth, Woods came good on his promise, stripping to his birthday suit and bolting toward the water as he dived into the surf, while Stefanovic, Abo and Danika Mason broke into fits of laughter. While a bit of butt action was all in the script, Woods then did the unthinkable, turning around to face the camera leaving the poor unfortunate editors no time to blur his modesty. Cue terrified screams from Abo and newsreader Jayne Azzopardi. 'No! Don't show it!,' Abo howled, as Woods flashed a beaming smile.

Axed Today star Alex Cullen opens up about 'Lambo guy' scandal and confirms TV return with Seven, as ex-colleague Karl Stefanovic lends support
Alex Cullen has officially returned to the screen, confirming a new TV role with Channel Seven just months after a headline-making scandal cost him his job at Nine. The former Today Show sports presenter made national news earlier this year when he accepted $50,000 from billionaire Adrian Portelli, better known as "Lambo guy", to refer to him on air by his preferred nickname, "McLaren Man". The moment triggered a media firestorm and led to Cullen stepping down from his role at Nine, followed shortly by his departure from the network altogether. Now, speaking publicly for the first time since the drama unfolded, the 44-year-old told Stellar's Something To Talk About podcast the incident marked "the hardest, toughest week of my career". "Never in a million years did I expect that all to go down," he told host Sarrah Le Marquand. "That week was a whirlwind, like, is this really happening? And it absolutely was." Cullen said he and wife Bonnie did their best to shield their three young children from the fallout, but suspects they still picked up on the chaos. "They saw me on the phone, pacing, trying to survive it all," he admitted. "But you've just got to put one foot in front of the other. It's a little clichéd, but it's true. My wife was a pillar of strength." The veteran presenter also credited close friends, including Today Show co-host Karl Stefanovic, for rallying around him in the aftermath. On Friday, Stefanovic quietly showed his ongoing support by liking Cullen's Instagram post about his Stellar magazine cover. "His ability to not let it faze him is amazing," Cullen said of Stefanovic, who himself was publicly axed and later reinstated as cohost of the Today Show in 2020. "I'm thankful I (had) those five years (on Today) with him; he was supportive throughout that. We had a great chat after it all happened, and he congratulated me." Despite the warm response from friends, colleagues and even strangers on the street, Cullen admitted the scandal sent him into a spiral which he is still recovering from. "You're like, why did I do (that)? How did I get in this situation? I mean, I know how. But you just think, you idiot … Your confidence is shot. So you've got to reset yourself. I went to some dark places. "It was a silly mistake, one I should have thought through. But I can't go back and change any of it. It's there for [all] to see. But I have a chance now to rewrite the next chapter." That new chapter is already well underway, with Cullen set to start not one but two new media gigs, including a return to Channel Seven, the network where he previously worked for 16 years. "It's really exciting. It's been in the works for a little while, and it's wonderful to be going back to Seven," he said. The TV star remained tight-lipped on what the new role actually entailed, only hinting, "Seven are adding some news offerings to their daytime line-up, and I'm going to be part of that." Cullen revealed Seven were quick to reach out after his departure from Nine, offering support and a potential path forward. "After everything went down [at Nine this year], Seven were one of the first on the phone to say: 'You have our support, and if you want to come back, we're a phone call away'. I can't tell you how much that meant to me and my family." In addition to his new TV role, Cullen and his family have relocated from Sydney to Melbourne so he can co-host The Christian O'Connell Breakfast Show on radio, starting Monday. "I'm looking forward to getting back into it, just connecting with people, telling their stories," he said. "It's not very nice being the story. It's better telling the story."

Charli XCX's wedding reception ‘featured only 20 guests and £8 martinis'
Charli XCX's wedding reception is said to have featured only 20 guests and £8 martinis. The 32-year-old singer, whose real name is Charlotte Aitchison, got hitched to The 1975 drummer George Daniel, 34, in a private ceremony at Hackney Town Hall, east London, on Saturday (19.07.25), before reportedly heading to an Italian restaurant and hosting a party at a local bar. A source told The Sun the couple invited around 20 guests for what was described as a 'very cool' and intimate day — a contrast to the larger celebration they are planning in Sicily later this year. After exchanging vows in Hackney, Charli and George walked to the nearby Italian restaurant Dalla for a private dinner. An insider told The Sun: 'Charli's wedding reception was the epitome of Brat. Her and George wanted to keep it very cool, so they shunned cars and walked down Hackney High Street to get to Dalla. The restaurant had closed for them and they had a massive family-style meal with loads of pasta and champagne. 'People walking past were stunned when they saw Charli and George having a cheeky pre-dinner cigarette outside. 'Charli and George then went to a nearby hotel to get changed before they went to Ellie's for a party.' The reception continued at Ellie's, a bar in Dalston that opened in May and is becoming known as one of the capital's trendiest spots. Ellie's is known for its £8 martinis. Charli reportedly changed out of her £3,300 Vivienne Westwood Nova Cora mini dress into a second white outfit, reportedly in case of any drink spills. 'To get in you just had to walk up to the front and say 'Charli',' the source said. 'Once inside, Charli and George had laid on a free bar and there were trays of cigarettes lying around for the smokers. There was a 'no social media policy' so no one posted any of the pictures from the reception online. It went on until around 4am when everyone crashed out and went home.' News of the engagement first emerged in 2023, with The Sun reporting George had proposed. In February 2024, sources said the couple had travelled to Italy to scout locations for their main celebration. Earlier this month, it was reported Charli and George had chosen Sicily as the location for their second, larger wedding later this year. A source told The Sun: 'This was the formal wedding and the big event is happening in a few months. 'Charli and George had the most perfect day in London. It was everything they wanted it to be — relaxed, informal and fun.'
