Business Leaders Return to Newport to See Progress on Tackling Inequality

Business in the Community (BITC) and senior business leaders have returned to Newport to see the progress of schemes designed to tackle food insecurity, unemployment and inequality.
The visit, part of BITC's flagship The King's Seeing is Believing programme, was led by Paul Lewis, Firmwide Managing Partner at Linklaters LLP and hosted by Professor Simon Gibson CBE, DL, CEO of Wesley Clover UK and Chair of the Newport Place programme.
Attended by senior representatives from a range of businesses including Linklaters LLP, Celtic Manor, Enterprise Holdings, Eversheds Sutherland, Gwent Police, KLA, Microsoft, Principality Building Society, The Crown Estate, Verizon Business Group and Wesley Clover UK, the visit gave business leaders an opportunity to see the challenges experienced by residents of Alway and Maindee and the work that is already being done on the ground to support their communities.
The visit comes as data shows that Maindee has one of the highest rates of deprivation in Wales, scoring 10/10 on the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation. Across Wales, four in 10 households with children have been referred to a food bank.
During the day, business leaders visited: The Collection Point at Alway Community Centre: This was a direct outcome from BITC's 2023 Seeing is Believing visit to Newport. The Collection Point is a collaboration between BITC, The Celtic Collection, Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations, Newport City Council and Alway Community Centre, distributing frozen meals, made fresh at the Celtic Manor Resort. The initiative has increased its distribution of 1,200 meals per month in 2024 to a projection of 30,000 meals in a year in 2025.

Community Youth Project: Working closely with Maindee Primary School, Community Youth Project is a community centre supporting young people with access to a safe space, support and a place to grow, develop resilience and build strong bonds with their community.
BITC launched its Pride of Place programme in Newport in 2022, bringing together businesses to form the Newport Place Board.
BITC's work in Newport includes: Running of apprenticeship awareness sessions with Wales & West Utilities, introducing young people to vocational pathways.
Holding enterprise days, offering 120 students an immersive business experience, including product design and financial literacy.
Offering World of Work Weeks, in partnership with 11 employers, engaging 90 Year 5 and 6 pupils in real-world career experiences.
Providing energy-saving kits, including smart thermostats and LED bulbs to more than 600 families.
Hosting two Festive Extravaganza events, providing more than 150 children with gifts and meals.
Working with the Celtic Collection to provide WiFi to residents of temporary housing to support education and employment.

Business in the Community (BITC), The King's Responsible Business Network, has announced The Times Top 50 Employers for Gender Equality 2025. The Times Top 50 Employers for Gender Equality is the UK's most highly profiled and well-established listing of employers taking action to create workplaces where everyone, regardless of gender, can thrive. The Times Top 50 Employers for Gender Equality annual awards process recognises employers that are demonstrating their commitment to embedding gender equality into all levels of their organisations and are challenging others to follow their example. Applicants are examined on the policies and cultural interventions they have put in place to ensure gender equality, including addressing pay disparities, ensuring progression, offering flexible working and family-friendly policies, and tackling sexual harassment. While many employers are working to ensure workplace gender equality, this year the results indicate that more businesses are proactive when it comes to sexual harassment and are working hard to develop inclusive cultures. However, flexible working is becoming more challenging for many businesses. Additionally, policies that support parents, carers and specific groups of women still need to improve. It says that businesses must address these risks and the slow pace of change, adopting proven measures to drive greater gender equity, taking action by: Embedding flexible working, proven to lead to a more inclusive working world Ensuring equitable support for parents and carers in the workplace, regardless of gender or who they provide care for Enhancing transparency around pay – including salary details on job adverts and being clear about how rewards are set Taking active, dedicated efforts to surface and address the ongoing issue of sexual harassment Ensuring an intersectional approach, collecting data and addressing the barriers faced by different groups of women in the workforce (i.e. women in low paid roles) BITC's gender equality campaign focuses on equality for all genders and those who do not identify as a gender. Opening Date Announced for Rhyl's Queen's Market

The new Queen's Market in Rhyl will officially open its doors to the public on July 10. The Queen's Market buildings have been an iconic landmark in the centre of Rhyl since 1902 and have provided a variety of uses for the town throughout the years. The new development includes 16 individual food and retail units, a double-sided bar and a large events space, and will be an integral community space right in the heart of Rhyl, Denbighshire County Council said. To celebrate the opening of the venue, a series of celebratory opening weekend events will be held each day from Thursday July 10 up until the end of the weekend. The internal fit out of the Market is now reaching the final stages, with final preparations being made ahead of opening the venue. Councillor Jason McLellan, Leader of the Council and Lead Member for Economic Growth & Tackling Deprivation, said: 'This venue will bring a fresh, modern and exciting offer to Rhyl and Denbighshire as a whole, and plays a major role in our regeneration efforts in the area by creating jobs and increasing footfall in Rhyl. 'The Market has great public transport links and is walking distance from both the high street and the beach. 'Queen's Market will be a hub for the community and will feature high-quality food, drink and retail options, as well as a state of the art, modern events space, which will be used to host concerts, markets, comedians, events and more. 'The building is opening right in time for summer, and just before the start of the summer holidays, one of the busiest times for footfall and tourism in the area. We are inviting all residents of Rhyl, and further afield, to come along to the opening weekend and discover what this new venue can offer them.' Andrew Burnett, Director at Midlands Events (Rhyl) Limited, said: 'We have a fantastic mix of high-quality food retailers, a themed bar and a full weekend of fantastic entertainment planned for the opening weekend. 'We look forward to welcoming all customers to come along to relax, eat good food, have a relaxing drink and enjoy the free entertainment we have planned over the weekend. 'We are very proud of the venue we have created and look forward to welcoming everyone on site.' The Queen's Market project has received funding from the Welsh Government, largely through its Transforming Towns Programme. The project has received funding from UK Government's SPF funding. It has also received funding from UK Government through the Pride of Place & Natural Environment: Rhyl, Prestatyn & Denbigh Programme. The project is also funded by Denbighshire County Council.
