Liverpool ready to make huge Alexander Isak bid THIS WEEK after latest transfer
Liverpool are ready to test Newcastle's resolve over Alexander Isak by making a bid for the Magpies' star striker this week amid the ongoing uncertainty over his future.
Isak has made it clear to his current club that he would like to explore options away from St James' Park following the best season of his career. The 25-year-old remains on Tyneside after ruling himself out of the club's pre-season tour with a thigh injury, although transfer speculation is also thought to be a factor behind his absence.
Liverpool have spent more than £200million on the likes of Florian Wirtz this summer but still have the room to invest another mammoth fee if they do want Isak - and Newcastle are having to consider the departure of their wantaway star.
Eddie Howe has made it clear that the Magpies are not looking to offload their best players, but equally acknowledge the decision would rest with the board. And if offers for Isak reach the £150m mark then Newcastle may be tempted to cash in.
Howe confirmed to the Daily Mail that Isak will not be joining the team in South Korea during the next seven days and Liverpool are due to be further boosted by an extra £65m that will come as a result of Luis Diaz joining Bayern Munich - a move that is close to being finalised.
Newcastle may well have to choose between negotiating and ensuring they maximise their profits from the player, or refusing all offers and informing Isak he is staying despite his desire to go elsewhere. It is understood that within the camp opinion is split as to which approach is best for the club.
Liverpool already have Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo among their attacking options. Darwin Nunez is expected to follow Diaz out of Anfield. Newcastle meanwhile would be losing their best player ahead of another crack at the Champions League, but Howe has remained coy when questioned.
He said recently: "The club will make the right decision with all the information that it has, and ultimately to try and move the club forward in whatever way that is. Then it's up to us to make good decisions the other way and try and improve the squad as best we can. That's what we're trying to do, regardless of Alex's situation.
"But I think there's a wider picture here. There's a whole football club that has to make the decision. The ownership, together with the board of directors, especially with the money involved in modern day transfers."

Rio Ferdinand tips Man Utd transfer flop to be 'like a new signing' this season
Rio Ferdinand is confident that one of Erik ten Hag's big-money signings will revive his Manchester United fortunes this season under Ruben Amorim. It has been another summer of rebuilding for the Red Devils after a dismal Premier League campaign which saw them finish a lowly 15th. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have arrived through the door to try and provide an attacking spark, while United are also hopeful of beating Newcastle United to the signing of Benjamin Sesko. But new signings alone will not be enough to inspire a turnaround at Old Trafford, and Amorim will have to get a better tune out of several players already at the club. And Ferdinand is hopeful that Mason Mount can step up and take on that responsibility after his latest impressive display in United's pre-season draw with Everton on Sunday. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. Mount started just 13 league games across his first two seasons at United in large part due to his consistent struggles with injury. But now, with a proper pre-season behind him, Ferdinand believes Mount could prove as good as a new signing for Amorim if he is able to put his injury woes behind him. 'I saw him out in Chicago and one of the things I said to him was, 'How are you feeling?' Ferdinand told talkSPORT. 'Because he's been robbed of any minutes really for injury. It's been really really disappointing to see. 'Being injured and in the shadows, I never had that at a new club. That is so depressing. It can take your soul away at times. 'I'm sure he's been in some dark moments. He will be like a new signing. I think this is no surprise. 'Whenever he's been fit in his career he's played, at Chelsea especially. Managers have played him when they won the Champions League. 'He was one of the most important players. He has the quality. He has the work ethic. He has the legs. 'He has the ability to be a really really good top player. I just hope he gets the time to play minutes to show himself.' More Trending Amorim was also keen to sing Mount's praises after his display against Everton, and is confident that the midfielder will hit the ground running in the new season. 'Yeah [Mount will carry this form],' Amorim said. 'Because he does everything 100%, every training, every game, he's always the same player. 'That is the only thing for you to maintain the consistency. He works a lot.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Benjamin Sesko transfer deadline emerges as Man Utd and Newcastle make huge bids
Slovenia star Benjamin Sesko is expected to make his preference for his next club clear later tonight as RB Leipzig receive almost matching offers from Premier League giants The coming hours are set to be decisive regarding the future of Benjamin Sesko with the RB Leipzig striker set to inform his current club whether he would prefer a move to Manchester United or Newcastle. Both Premier League clubs have been locked in a tug of war over the Slovenia centre forward and have submitted similar bids that Leipzig are evaluating. But latest reports suggest that the decision will ultimately come down to which club Sesko would rather turn out for this season - and Sesko is now expected to confirm his intentions by tonight. Earlier on Tuesday it emerged that United formally submitted a bid of £73.8m for the 22-year-old, speeding up the process that will see him leave the Bundesliga outfit. Newcastle were first to lodge a formal bid that was rejected. Following talks with the Bundesliga club, Eddie Howe's side submitted an improved offer of £69.5m plus £8.6m in add-ons on Monday. There are added considerations however that could also end up impacting Premier League champions Liverpool. Should Sesko decide to move to Old Trafford instead of St James' Park it would increase the chances of Alexander Isak remaining with the Toon despite expressing his desire to explore new opportunities amid interest from Anfield. Although the Toon's asking price remains some way higher than what the Premier League champions appear willing to pay having last week had a first bid rejected. Isak has not featured in pre-season for Newcastle with the club citing a thigh injury, though he has also taken himself to the facilities of former club Real Sociedad for a mini training camp. United, on the other hand, want to upgrade on Rasmus Hojlund, who's available for just £30m after two difficult seasons at Old Trafford. The Red Devils have already signed two forwards this summer, bringing in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo for a combined £133.5m from Wolves and Brentford. That is despite the club not being in Europe this season, while it remains unclear how motivated Sesko is around the chance of participating in this season's Champions League for Newcastle.
